right now my research indicates that people have not been tracking hagfish sex in a way that would allow them to record sexual changes over the animals' lifetimes (i.e. most of the records of hagfish sex come from dissection, which is a generally terminal close on any potential future changes) and there are multiple different authoritative pronouncements on how their sexual systems work that are fully contradictory and also generalize not just across species but across genus so i am in fact going to start emailing people now
