I’m 33 and American. This myth is so widespread here I didn’t know the truth until I was TWENTY-NINE. I was literally taught something similar IN COLLEGE—that the Puritans were so reactionary in America as a result of what happened to them in England. And this was in a class about the history of witchcraft accusations and the Salem witch trials. Like, we were taught that they were horrible HERE, but the narrative was still that they faced injustice in England.
This wasn’t a stupid teacher, either. She had her first doctorate and was pursuing a second. Basically everything else I learned in that class checks out. The myth just runs THAT DEEP.

It’s also important to bear in mind that the Original Series had a predominantly female fanbase, and during its initial run, was widely mocked and dismissed by mainstream (i.e., male) science fiction fans as being fake sci-fi for girls. It’s difficult to overstate the influence women had on the franchise in its early days; most of the early Star Trek conventions were organised by and for women, and indeed, those same organisers were primarily responsible for the massive letter-writing campaign that prevented the show from being cancelled after the 1968 season. The attitude that scifi was ever pure, misogynistic action-adventure really bothers me, because long before tv was invented, scifi was about exploration-- sometimes of unfamiliar places, but always of unfamiliar IDEAs. Whether written by Mary Shelley or by Robert Heinlein, scifi was about exploring human nature both as it was and as how it might be, the effects on culture if something were changed for the better or worse, the view on [the author's present time] from an outside perspective-- whether alien or foreign or anachronistic. Scifi is cerebral. It’s about *thinking* rather than *action,* and the most acclaimed scifi was the stuff that was well thought-out and gave people something to discuss. Usually stuff that the author thought was *really weird* irl, because the real world is full of stuff that’s weird to think about. Action-hero scifi was B-movie stuff. Pulp. Junk. Of course people liked it-- some more than others-- but it wasn’t acclaimed and it wasn’t very mature and it wasn’t what scifi was about. You didn’t form a book club to talk about the latest adventures of Horny Angry Racist Man Fighting Space-Indians.

That was the case back when people used typewriters. That stopped being the case when word processors took over. That hasn't been the general custom since... wow. My typing class in 1992 which i took for an easy credit taught us that you should only double space when typing on a typewriter and never on a computer or word processor.
early word processing classes when my school first got computers in '83 through graduation for high school still double spaced. The directions my second college gave Masters and Ph.d candidates gave people circa 1995 still required double spacing on all submissions or they'd be rejected out of hand. Both that University and my previous college considered double spacing for all papers the academic standard.

Yep. It fucks up formatting on modern word processors and layout programs, ebook creators, pdf creators... it's no longer necessary & actively detrimental & has been for a really long time. It doesn't surprise me that academia held on to an outdated custom that actively messes up new technology much longer than necessary, though, having grown up the kid of a professor.
Essentially if you are typing AND reading in fixed width, e.g Courier New or Consolas (early computer word processors and message transmission systems nearly always displayed text in fixed width, though you could sometimes print in a different font), double spaces are preferred for clarity. Variable width fonts—and this is especially true of today's modern ones—automatically adjust spacing around periods so double spacing is not necessary.
But sometimes people learn and teach based on dogma and not logic.
I have been a copy editor for digital content for five years. The first thing I do in every document is Cmnd+F for double spaces and replace them all work single spaces. So not only do I not double space, I actively negate other people's double space habits.
I learned to double space when I was taught touch typing in high school about 20 years ago, but the class was taught by the teacher who originally taught on typewriters, so it's understandable that there were holdovers.
It helped me learn touch typing, but I habitually double-spaced for a long time, finally started shifting over like five-ish years ago? Maybe longer? Fucked if I remember.
I have set up libre office so it ignores when I accidentally double tap the space bar, which I still do on occasion.
I understand that it messes with coding; I have seen it. I understand that it messes with conventional spacing; I have had complaints. But I have trouble reading digital stuff, and I'll use any tricks that make it easier for my to proofread my own texts, darnit !

From time to time, and just now in the wake of Brianna Ghey's murder, those wishing to mourn our (transgender) dead sometimes use phrases like "rest in power", appropriate to the black community whence such phrases came, less appropriate when applied to white people, even when from other marginalized and oft-murdered groups.
May I offer, instead, that we popularise: "You Were Known To Us"
To make a generalization that I think is reasonable, trans people tend to want, more than anything else, to be simply recognised for who we are. To be known.
Not in the sense of "to be famous" but in the sense of just to be known for who we are, rather than for who we aren't.

Really makes you think about the amount of effort put into character movements, though, when so many of the MCs (I’m not counting Sleeping Beauty there) are that distinctive.
i think more characters should have canes actually. theyre cool. theyre sexy. they can have swords in them. they come in any color u want.

the point of this post is not swords. it is not how well someone can fight w a cane. the point is I want to see more disabled representation and I want to see characters who use canes and I want them to use them correctly and I want them to be just as fleshed out and interesting as their abled counterparts.
my cane user friend and I were talking abt sword canes just before I made the post so I tossed it in. I collect blades—knives, daggers, swords—and I’m also a disabled cane user who collects fancy canes. so I think combining the two is cool. I don’t even think they’d be good for self defense, I just think they’re a fun thing to show off to friends!
but this post has always, first and foremost, been abt mobility aids. this is abt being a young cane user who doesn’t see rep. I’d love to see highschool dramas where a character uses a cane but it’s not used to make u pity them, it’s just a regular part of their life. I wanna see fantasy cane users where the animal head handle speaks. I wanna see sci-fi cane users and cane users in romances and cane users in main roles.
I know abt canne de combat and bartitsu and the other fighting styles u can use a cane for. that’s never been what this post is abt. I just want to see myself in media.

My favorite thing is when I get to cosplay wizards and whoever, because then my walking stick (which my phys.therapist recommended over a cane) gets to dress up as well. More mobility aids in design! More representation in characters!

What and who is included in the lgbt/queer/gay(general) communities aren’t always super clear cut actually and like... that’s fine.
Like a cishet man that likes doing drag likely doesn’t consider himself queer and neither would any of his queer/lgbt friends but he might still be super active in the community and mostly hang out with gay guys and bring his girlfriend to pride and maybe even perform at pride. And maybe the queer community is where he feels most at home because he’s kind of feminine, and doing drag is a big part of his life.
Irl probably almost nobody would kick this guy out. A lot of internet discourse would. But that kind of makes no sense.
I grew up in the theatre community, and after I learned what being gay was I discovered that gay people were everywhere in theatre. But so were straight people that just kind of fell outside of societal norms a bit. Straight people that often just felt more comfortable around gay people because they could just be themselves.
And yeah that’s an obvious example of people that aren’t queer hanging out in queer spaces but there’s also a ton of gray area. Straight polyamorous people for example. People that identify as cis that “crossdress” or even do some things that might be considered to be part of “transitioning”. Or some intersex people that don’t id with the lgbt community. Or people that id as non binary but not as trans.
At some point you need to stop trying to figure out who definitively belongs in the club because like... there is no club. Irl queer spaces tend to cover huge swaths of people. There’s a lot of gray area. And also you’ll also tend to find a lot of cishet gender conforming people in these spaces too. Because their significant other or a family member or a good friend is lgbt+ or because they’re poly or because they just feel more comfortable around queer people or they just feel like fighting for gay rights is something that they’re supposed to be doing. And if they’re respectful and the space isn’t explicitly “no cishet right now” then like, them being there isn’t that much of an issue usually.
All of this internet discourse that tries to exclude or bully people just isn’t grounded in reality.
There is literally a significant subgroup of men who have sex with other men, but consider themselves straight and don’t respond to outreach for gay/queer men. Like, this is a known thing, particularly when it comes to HIV outreach campaigns; it’s why HIV campaigns use MSM (men who have sex with men) when most other LGBT+ stuff doesn’t.
Now, a lot of people’s first impulse is to say they have internalised homophobia, but a) that’s rude as hell to assume about a stranger and b) a lot of them just... don’t. They’ve thought about it and they aren’t gay! They have straight lives that they’re fine with, and sometimes they have sex with men!
And something that gets me about Queer Identity Discourse is that it would just immediately declare these people Not Gay And Not In Need Of Our Resources, when they clearly are! They have the same struggles with HIV/AIDS as gay men, they get criminalised by anti-gay sex laws the same as gay men -- they just happen to identify as straight!
When we fixate on trying to declare people as queer or not based on their identity, we miss the ways in which behaviour pushes self-declared straight people under our umbrella. You don’t have to like it, but you do have to realise that these straight people are being harmed by homophobia, transphobia etc.
