its so fucked that not only did they erase our languages and beat and kill our people for using them but they stole the words of important tribes and important people and used them for the military and for trees and for food and for summer camps. average native american name is seen by non ntvs as a joke or something to use or consume, not a human being
i like that ppl r thinking abt town names and things thats very good to be aware of but just to be clear this is actually specifically about other things actually, the things everyone but those looking up their nation forget about
sequoyah was the man who created the tsalagi syllabary before it was ever a tree
if i try to look for apparel or crafts to show off my chickasaw pride, i get results for chickasaw plums which is just a specific species of plum before i get results about human beings
others have mentioned if they google their nations name they get boot companies before their nations website!
theres a tweet that still haunts me that was about a Quirky Quasi American Restaurant in europe or somewhere that was being funny by being cowboy themed and their steaks were named after native american nations. even outside the usa we are nothing but literal dead meat for others consumption
"blackhawk" "apache" - fuck theres a whole wikipedia page for the way weve had our names used for weapons used to colonize and kill us and others!
yes talk about town and location names but you need to look farther than that. it gets so much worse, i promise
"Your people aren't very... warm, are you?"
"I don't grasp what you mean, ma'am."
"I've had you for what, ten, fifteen years now?"
"Fourteen this spring, ma'am."
"And yet I've never seen you smile. Not even once."
"It's a matter of respect."
"You don't smile to people you respect?"
"I don't smile to people I don't like, and I don't lie to people I respect. I don't like you, ma'am, but I respect you enough to not lie about it."
"Well that's rather cold."
"Then I suppose we are."
I don't know why I like aaron burr so much man. this guy is so strange but for some reason I want to read every single fanfic in existence just to understand Why He's Like This. why are you like this.
It drives me up the wall when I can't understand a character motivation. I can't even pinpoint any trauma because the guy just grabs onto whatever he can to not be left out. sir what the fuck. what makes you move forward in life. I don't understand what made you like this.
asking someone to dissect not burr's character, but what made him this way. what was the point when he could really never change. or could he never change in the first place. I need to know this. god damn.
I thought about this question, and here’s my guess as to why he is the way he is based on something (or, more accurately, someone) the musical left out: His uncle.
Burr’s uncle, Timothy Edwards, is a crucial piece of his puzzle that we’re never told about. After Burr’s parent’s died, he was taken in by his grandfather. After his grandfather died, he was taken in by his uncle. Mr. Edwards was abusive and cruel to the point where a young Aaron Burr attempted to run away multiple times. All of his attempts were unsuccessful. With a cruel man taking care of you during your formative teen years, it makes sense why Burr is very unwilling to state his own opinions when they might go against the majority; it’s a defense mechanism from when speaking out against his caretaker put him in danger. He has since outgrown this defense mechanism, yet he refuses to release it because what if it’s needed in the future? What if he’s punished for speaking out again?
The musical doesn’t discuss his uncle for what I can assume is either A) time constraints, B) no good place to introduce it, or C) placing a heavier emphasis on his “preserve my family’s legacy” motivation instead of his childhood trauma. Perhaps it’s a mix of two, maybe even all three points. Either way, I personally think it’s very in character for him to hide a crucial detail for how he ended up the way he did from the audience—especially in comparison to Hamilton, who doesn’t hide his past at all; he just reveals it to us at a slower pace. The only info in the opening number Hamilton doesn’t reveal later on is his cousin’s death, which I think is an interesting connection point. Left to their own devices, neither man mentions the negative impact a later caretaker had on them. It’s just in Burr’s case, there is no narrator to tell us about his uncle because he refuses to be that vulnerable with anyone. Perhaps his wife and/or daughter knew, but they’re never onstage for that possibility to matter.
