and if i said nolan's odyssey starring no greek actors and with no recognizable aspects of greek culture or involvement by greeks, is the direct legacy of white supremacist colonialism that treated ancient greece as not just the pinnacle of ancient culture, but of an artificially created "european" culture, which white western europeans and their settler descendants, as the new pinnacle of culture, were the sole spiritual inheritors of.
^^^ PEOPLE ARE STILL THERE. There's a metro station across the street from the colosseum where i found a hair in my pizza slice. We drove by ruins of an amphitheater next to a motorway in greece once. It's literally just real places where real people live and have lived. It's not mythical perfect lands that once existed. I went to Itacha in 2023 and there was not enough parking space.

I love that a lion with an eagle's head and wings is such a well-known mythical beast but apparently the English language can only agree on a grand total of 3 out of 7 letters in its name.
Regex that ought to match (most) spelling variations of this mythical beast's name:

we need to instill a new storytelling rule of thumb into people called "show don't tweet" where we encourage them to put all pertinent canon information into the actual story and its official supplemental material instead of using reddit AMAs as lore dlcs
If you make a post slightly critical of a certain piece of mainstream media you will get people whose emotional support media it is posting at you like they're doing a power of friendship speech in a shōnen show
"You say that D&D isn't gay... And maybe you're right. Maybe it is simply a product made by a company that cares only for profit and cynically marketed through appeals to identity... But it brought me and my friends together! And I won't sit here and let you disparage the bad company's product by pointing out that it's not gay!!!" gets into a giant robot made of D&D products while wielding a huge asterisk that says "I don't support Wizards of the Coast the company"

OMG there is NO PROOF Travi supports the separatist movement. Posing with Nute Gunray after winning the shockbowl doesn't mean ANYTHING about his actual politics it's basic **FUCKING** professionalism. And judging a woman for her choice to leave a misogynist cult is DISGUSTING. All you losers would rather have Tae still traumatized and writing albums about how devastating the attachment ban was than happy and thriving with a big dick hubby. Maybe give the lyrics of "Honey" a read: "If anyone called me 'honey' / It was training in the temple, droid white / They were saying that blade don't suit me / And I swung like a bantha" 🗣️ 🙄

Ah....ahem...I must go against the tide at hand. The Swiffie has a point: Tae-Lor suffered greatly in the order. The Jedi may wear the mask of nurture, but only as a blindfold, just as suitable for wrapping around a dissenter's mouth....to the brave few, the Jedi are the rag itself, old, flimsy, soon to be discarded into the depths of our great core...I cannot hate Swiff for seeking such freedom. Nor can I claim honest curiosity to her boyfriend's leanings, when at the heart of your oh so beloved Republic sits none other than the most fearsome, all powerful Sith...

@joemomrgneissguy SPACE MINING. HO BOY.
So when mining comes into a conversation, there are several 'laws' of mining and processing that I like to consider that people tend to forget:
Location and rarity of commodity
Location and rarity of extraction techniques/reagents
What is necessary for this operation to work?
Where does the finished product go?
Some of these are extraneous. Theoretically, we don't have to care that iron is common on earth and might be present on the moon, so it changes the conversation from "why?" to "how would we?". Same with extraction and reagents. If you don't care how expensive it is to ship- for example: water and carbon dioxide to the moon because you want to process He-3, nothing can stop you.
However, what will stop planning, is processing. Blowing up a rock is easy. Collecting the rock and breaking it into a usable form is not. If there isn't a plan for exactly what commodity is being mined and how to separate it and all the equipment that needs to be made to get it into a usable form, and a plan to get that equipment into space. God help the poor bastard.
And fundamentally, no matter HOW you turn it, people use the finished product. If there are no people where you are mining the Thing, you need to have a way for the Thing to get back to the people who need it. WHY are you mining the Thing? What is economic about the Thing being made? and Is it worth the money?
[angry geologist rant under the cut]
#Op I didn't know this was even a possibility but you've sold me#As a biologist I have no idea whatsoever about geology but space colonization in reality annoys me so much#Look at me#No LOOK AT ME#We've adapted TO EARTH. We can live ON EARTH#If we go to other places we have to TERRAFORM THEM#Here on earth if we want to change an environment to another we have to pour so much resources and time to do that#AND THEN KEEP DOING THAT UNLESS WE WANT THE ORIGINAL ENVIRONMENT TO REGROW (see golf courses)#And we do that here! On earth! Where everything is kinda the same! (Think electromagnetic pole/atmosphere composition/etc.)#Now pray tell how do we do that ON VENUS#ON THE MOON!!!!!#out of the question#Sorry for the rant Op i know it's very different from the stuff that you wrote#But then again I do not know anything about dry sciences - @devilchiara
YOU'RE SO RIGHT THOUGH. GO OFF.
I always feel so cheated in stories when characters are walking around with this Big Guilt and then...you find out that the thing wasn't their fault at all. And not in a "they thought they did it but it turns out they were set up" way, or even a "accepting that just because they did A which caused B which caused C it doesn't mean C was their fault", way but where they finally lay out the sequence of events and it's clear that any thinking person would not connect them. Like, fucking commit!!! The character isn't LESS compelling if they actually did the thing! You can't have the haunted brooding meow meow who is...also completely blameless
#!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#the version of this that pisses me off most is the 'they were mistaken and the bad thing didn't even happen at all and no one died' version#it's such a cop out#bc i do think a character who's wracked with guilt over something that wasn't their fault can be quite compelling#but you need that 'just because they did A which caused B which caused C doesn't mean C was their fault' part of it#character who takes on all the blame when they deserve only some if it heart emoji#character who takes on all the blame when someone else put them in an impossible position and they had functionally no choice heart emoji#even character who thought they deserved all the blame but someone else set them up CAN be fun although often i find it disappointing#but 'actually nothing bad even happened'? boring.#edit: also thinking about it more i DO think clueing the reader in sooner rather than later is better#that's the problem is a lot of storytellers want to save it for a Big Reveal#and it's like man.....that's not a reveal it's a rug pull#have your OTHER characters telling me 'yeah that horrible thing wasn't actually their fault'#even as the character in question is going around like 'i'm a monster'#make it a character trait not a plot twist. y'know? via @storybook-souls
YES
and like done right, "nothing bad even happened" COULD be done really well. Like, Character A thinks they got Character B killed, fucks up their life over it, but Character B was actively hiding from them and there are huge emotional and interpersonal consequences? Good shit. Character A is guilty about Character B, Character B turns out to be alive, Character A is like, yay? Thumbs down emoji.
The biggest one I hate is "Character A thinks they got Character B killed and is very fucked up about it, Character B is not dead but thinks Character A has abandoned them and decides to become a villain about it even though it is really difficult to make us believe it's Character A's fault, even though Character A also thinks it is."
Basically I find performative angst boring I guess.
all the rights that come with marriage you should be able to have without marriage btw. you should be able to designate a person who can visit you in the hospital regardless of your relationship to that person.
People in the notes are saying "You can!" referring just to the hospital visitation part, and sure (depending). But people should have access to ALL of the benefits of marriage without needing to be married.
You should be able to add anyone you want on your health insurance plan.
You should be able to sponsor the visa of anyone you choose to move to your home country.
You should be able to name anyone you choose as the legal-from-birth legal coparent of any child you give birth to.
You should be able to apply for student aid on your own at any age.
And yes, yes, ideally healthcare and college should be free, international migration should be unrestricted, and the entire concept of legal parenthood should be rewritten from the ground up. But right now we're talking about marriage benefits.
I hate you Ozempic craze I hate you 'heroin chic' I hate you weight loss ads on public radio I hate Burn Fat Fast ads every thirty seconds I hate you I hate you I hate you
I grew up before the term 'thigh gap' was invented I grew up before 'hip dip' was invented I was born before 'muffin top' was a thing before 'clean girl look' was a thing before 'glass skin' was a thing before razoring off peach fuzz was a thing and I'm so so so fucking tired of us inventing new concepts purely for the purpose of convincing people to hate their own bodies enough to buy products
Last time Tuberculosis ran through the USA a small number of people got it on purpose to look skinny and waifish and delicate and used makeup to look flushed and bony and when the Victorians figured out tapeworms people would infect themselves on purpose to starve themselves smaller and women and now in the year of our lord 2026 there is a noticeable fraction of the USAmerican population genuinely thrilled about a treatment-resistant microbial parasite that makes you shit and vomit your brains out for a month because side effects include weight loss and STILL we talk about being skinny like it's the natural default setting for all healthy people as if it's a self-sustaining standard and not an imaginary goal that we are constantly constantly constantly beating ourselves with a whip to acheive
i feel like im a weird age where i got just a blurry glimpse at the world Before. it used to be cold in the mornings and websites had fun games and the search results showed you what you searched for. covid wasn't a thing. can anybody fucking hear me. did i dream it all????
Revolutionary idea: imagine [character I like] with [disability I have]. More people should get on this!
In my post about male authors writing female characters, I mentioned Jókai, and it pains me that non-Hungarian readers never got to know Lady Baradlay. The Sons of the Stone-Hearted Man, or The Baron's Sons, as it's called in the existing but super obscure English translation, was a formative read for me, a big adventurous emotional big-R but also small-r Romantic novel like Les Mis or Count of Monte Cristo, and it all hinges on the Lady Baradlay.
The novel starts with Lord Baradlay, a dying Hungarian baron, dictating his last will and testament to his wife. It's a set of hyperspecific instructions on how his conservative, pro-Habsburg political legacy must be carried on after his death. The Baron orders his wife to remarry after six weeks, to his closest political ally, allowing the man to take possession of the Baron's castle and his seat in parliament. He has three young adult sons, one training as a diplomat, one as a military officer, the third as a courtier/civil servant, all three with the potential to reach a high and influential rank, and the Baron gives specific instructions on how their careers, and even their private lives, must be organised to further their father's political agenda. And then he dies. And immediately after his death, his wife, who truly loved him, kneels by his bedside and swears an oath to god that she will do the exact opposite of everything he ordered, she specifically says may God only have mercy on his soul if I manage to undo all the evil he planned.
And then the rest of the novel is about her doing that. Refusing to remarry, breaking with her husband's political allies, giving the castle and the parliament seat to her eldest son and supporting him in a progressive, anti-Habsburg political career, and convincing her two younger sons to come home from Vienna and join the cause of Hungarian independence. The latter includes her doing a fair bit of espionage and semi-accidentally stealing an entire company of hussars. Of course the plot then runs into the 1848 Hungarian revolution, and as we know it doesn't exactly end well, but it's a really wonderful historical family epic.
