I recently watched this and was blown away by this entire scene. This was a one off pair of characters with no names and no lines. They exist entirely to demonstrate the paladin being a Good Person by saving a baby. After he does this, he goes and gives money to a beggar - who is a dragonborn. He is one of two dragonborn in the film, and neither one needs to be a dragonborn. It would have been so easy to make the tabaxi and dragonborn characters humans, or slap some ears on them to make them elves, and they didn’t. They really went out of their way, building practical effects for the tabaxi and dragonborn when they didn’t need to… this is a movie that loves its source material and it also loves being a movie. People working on this movie cared.

Can confirm, Jarnathan (the aarakocra, or “birdman” as some people here call him) was all practical effects! His face was an animatronic mask, his feet were articulated high-heel shoes, and he had three fully-functional talon-like fingers on each hand too!

The directors Daley and Goldstein could have made him entirely CG, but they instead went to Legacy Effects, who specialize in prosthetics and animatronics and puppeteering, because they REALLY wanted Jarnathan to look and feel authentic.

According to the artbook, the wings on him were a backpack, a self-contained mechanism that weighed around 60 pounds. The wings extended open to about ten or eleven feet!

we as a fandom may have a problem found one of the best methods of exploring relationships in fanfiction, as in most fandoms they don't have an answer for how two characters would meet and get together if they were a ska band leader and clown/an illegal fisherman and a rockstar/fighting in the Emu War/stationed in the wilderness to watch for wildfires/etc., and in the OFMD fandom we have an answer for how they'd get together in every single one of these scenarios.

bagginshield can only exist on the road, in that tenuous stretch of time between one home and another, when ‘home’ is synonymous with ‘partnership’ and as transient as the passing stream THERE IS NO BAGGINSHIELD AFTER THE FACT!

in an ideal world, where Thorin lives and Fili and Kili do too, even after the party has settled and the dragon is dead, you’re telling me BILBO BAGGINS is not going RIGHT back home? he was always going to go home. HE WAS ALWAYS GOING TO GO HOME.

because the thing that fuels him, the fundamental injustice he sees before him, the great wrong that must be righted is that Home; this beautiful, necessary, indelible fixture of the heart has been Stripped away from these people, and there is no injustice so terrible as that! the lack of Home!

so of course Bilbo went back. of course he did. because the thing that matters, the whole point of this whole story, was always Home.

Honestly I see your point, especially when it comes to Thorin, we would have to change him fundamentally as a person for him to willingly live in the Shire, but I'm at crossroads with Bilbo. Because yes, he sees Shire as his home, as the place he can always come back to but to what extent after the journey itself and after actually being accepted by the dwarves?

Because before the journey, he was already ostracised for most of his life for being different than a typical Hobbit, and when he did come back, he stood out even more. Hell, he barely had people there who he could count on seeing as the moment they thought him dead, they decided to rob him!

Knowing that, would it be so crazy to believe that, without the grief and pain after losing people who he valued and loved so deeply, he would like to stay? Personally, I don't think so. Perhaps he would go back, but I don't think he would stay for long because in the end what is a Home? Sometimes it's a place, sure, but sometimes it's the people who make it and with Bilbo it could go either way imo.

(But I also love your opinion, it's so very poetic, makes their relationship so special and tragic 💛)

but... bilbo was never ostracized or seen as different before the journey. he was a wealthy respectable bachelor hailing from not one but two very upstanding families! yes, the tooks had a reputation of being kind of odd and eccentric, but they were still held in very high regard in the shire. hell, they're basically as close to hobbit royalty as it gets! pippin became the nineteenth shire-thain of took clan after lotr! and the bagginses were basically the hobbitest hobbits to ever hobbit, and bilbo was considered (and considered himself) to be just like his father, about until he overheard the dwarves talk shit about him in his own living room lol. he lost that reputation upon his return, but he had to have it in order to lose it. that's exactly why the journey is unexpected - bilbo never was seen by anyone, including himself, as someone who could even theoretically be roped into this kind of nonsense! he very much was a typical hobbit! until he wasn't anymore

and even all that aside, even though the journey did, in fact, change him fundamentally, bilbo still is a hobbit. dwarves build whole cities underground and rarely leave them, because they are notoriously secretive and closed-off and would rather hone their craft among their kin than mingle with outsiders without a good reason. they don't farm and normally just buy food from their non-dwarrow neighbors in exchange for stuff they make. how would someone from a culture that pretty much entirely revolves around farming, tilling soil, growing stuff, from a species that, according to a widespread fanon, was created personally by the goddess of nature and plants, fare in the underground city of artisans, metallurgists and warriors long-term? bilbo may be a gentlehobbit living a cushioned life and not a farmer, but still his idea of a souvenir from a life-altering adventure is an acorn that will one day grow into an oak tree - where would he plant it under the mountain? yes, some of his relatives are othos and lobelias, but he has a huge and diverse extended family, enjoys hosting guests, is well-loved by his niblings and young cousins. how would someone from an insular culture built upon close-knit communities adapt to living full-time surrounded by a whole different species with a completely different culture, lifestyle and values, with no one else of his kind for miles and miles around? nah, this guy was already miserable after just a few days in erebor and will be heading home as soon as his horribly injured best friend slash newly acquired situationship is on the mend
