I mean, I’m taking this on good faith, and I’m not saying this is my own personal belief.  I believe in all crafts. 

But…the structure of the stitches and the resulting fabric is pretty different between crochet and knitting.  You get different effects between them, which lends themselves to different crafts.  And none of the effects of (most) crochet stitches lend themselves naturally to socks.  You’re (usually) going to end up with something either stiff and bulky, or full of holes that will Not Feel Good to walk on. Whereas knitted socks will just…BE elastic and comfortable.

Sure you CAN do it.  And there are people and patterns that do it well!!

But MOST crochet socks are a bit like calling this a bicycle

But this is BABY controversy, this is nothing.  You haven’t even touched on the good shit like RHSS or that time the Olympic Committee dissed us.

i’m sure some of them are unintentional rather than premeditated scammers but they’re all still thieving assholes who shouldn’t be running businesses and need to give all the money back.

the olympics commitee: ravelry, well-known knitting (fiber arts in general) site, held a contest they called the ‘ravelympics’ to drum up olympic support then get a cease-and-desist letter for copyright infringement, and the letter said that calling it that ‘denigrates the true nature of the Olympic Games’ and was ‘disrespectful to our country’s finest athletes’

except, you know, ravelry had like 2 million users who all, by nature of ravelry being a website, have basic tech literacy. the social media backlash was so bad that the olympics board had to make 2 official apologies because the first wasn’t good enough.

RHSS: Red Heart Super Saver is cheap Walmart-level yarn. some people hate it because it used to be just really fucking awful and they haven’t bothered updating their opinions. some people hate it because they hate non-natural yarns. some people hate it because they’re yarn snobs(which, btw, comes in two flavors: the disdainful assholes and the people who just don’t see the point if you have the money and don’t indulge yourself). a lot of people defend it because it’s cheap and widely locally available and honestly not that bad after a wash and some fabric softener.

crocheted socks: exactly what kaitoukitty said. people who crochet socks tend to either be new crocheters who are not aware crochet is not the best medium for socks or experienced crocheters who are pushing the boundaries of the medium.

babies on fire: i can’t believe we’re talking about yarncraft controversies and no one mentioned babies on fire. that’s my favorite controversy.

so when deciding what material to make baby blankets out of, in addition to considerations like softness, ease of washing, and allergy concerns quite a lot of people like to consider what would happen to the baby if the blanket was set on fire. yes, really.

wool has the problem of hand-wash only blankets for a new mother (superwash wool exists but that’s a whole ‘nother paragraph), allergy concerns, and also real fucking expensive if you want quality not-itchy-on-baby-skin wool. but pro-wool-blanket people insist that because wool actually resists being set on fire pretty well and also can self-extinguish, it’s the only sensible choice.

acrylic on the other hand is cheap and you can throw it in the washing machine, and while bad quality acrylics might be stiff and plastic-y they’re not itchy, but if it gets set on fire it will melt onto the baby’s skin. pro-acrylic people insist that if your blanket is on fire, you probably have bigger problems than what the blanket is made of.

It became the first website to ban pro-Trump content. This occurred after a user reported a pro-Trump pattern maker for I believe hate speech? For some reason Ravelry didn’t have an anonymous reporting feature at the time, so the pattern maker found out and sent followers to harass the user. This caused Ravelry to 1) make the report feature anonymous 2) say “fuck it, you guys are all assholes, Trump supporters are banned now.”

Disney went after a pattern maker on the site and issued a DCMA takedown for a crochet Grogu amigurumi pattern (known as Baby Yoda at the time). This prompted a huge backlash from the users who posted their own modified Baby Yoda patterns en-masse for no other reason than to spite Disney and their lawyers. The entire front page of Ravelry was nothing but Baby Yoda at one point.

If I ask my mother she could probably give me more. These are just what I remember off the top of my head. I don’t knit or crochet (I do cross-stitch and don’t really interact with the wider community) but my mother runs a small yarn dyeing business and has been part of the community on the Internet for a LONG time before that so I get all the juicy details on the drama.

Yup, there’s a huge number of times where Sherlock Holmes is the ONLY person to take a young woman’s complaint or worry seriously and finds out someone is up to some serious evil.  Holmes also shows a lot of compassion and empathy with the victims over and over again.  (This is why I find “Secretly a woman” or “Trans” Holmes headcanons much more convincing than “sociopath” Holmes.)

I am never going to shut up about how much I specifically love The Adventure of The Copper Beeches because it is literally Sherlock Holmes listening to a young lady he does not know except as a potential client, agreeing with her that a potential job she has interviewed for that she thinks is SUPER SKETCHY is, indeed, sketchy as fuck and when she says she’s probably gonna take the job anyways because the money is good and she needs it going “OKAY I GUESS but for the love of god please write to us so we know you’re okay we will literally drop everything and jump on a train if you want us to”.

The job turns out to indeed be sketchy as fuck, she writes to them, Holmes and Watson drop everything and jump on a train when she asks them to. I read this story for the first time when I was twelve and it made a HUGE impression.

This is also the basis for a lot of speculation about Holmes’ family life.  The idea that he has been a victim of abuse, or his mother was abused (or even murdered by his father.)  There’s definitely SOMETHING that makes him very aware of how dangerous isolated families can be, and the dark things that can happen behind closed doors.  Plus, of course, the motivation to devote himself to stopping crime.  And yes, so much of it is of the personal type.

dude see this is one aspect of the original books i NEVER understand why modern remakes (cough cough) don’t go all in on. One thing that annoys me is how much the BBC version of Sherlock (and the fandom around it) focus on police cases or cold cases.  In the stories, Holmes’ bread and butter cases had fuck-all to do with the police and in a few stories, he actively works around/against them, or outright lies to them.  Of the many, many things I wish that show had done differently, this is one is particularly obnoxious since it’s such a gimme.

There were very few actual murder cases in the Canon, and Holmes handled them either one of two ways:

Option one: The murder victim was innocent while the killer was an abusive bastard, see Speckled Band. Conclusion, arrest and have the killer charged (Or in the case of Speckled Band, indirectly murder him yourself then shrug and go home)

Option two: The victim was murdered to protect someone that the victim was abusing, or for vengeance, see Boscombe Valley, Devil’s Foot, Abbey Grange. Conclusion, Oops, I don’t know who the killer is, I am suddenly incompetent, oh look a pheasant.

Brush your teeth.

If there is ONE PIECE of hygiene you can do, one rote activity that you can muster the spoons for in the evening, make it your teeth.

Shower? You can skip a shower for one night and just wipe yourself down with a damp towel. Brush your teeth.

Skincare? You can pare down the steps, and your skin can heal from a bit of acne. Enamel can't. Brush your teeth.

Brushing your hair? Fuck it, get a buzz cut! Get a protective style! Your hair will grow back, but your teeth won't! Brush your teeth.

Flossing would be good. Mouthwash would be good. But if you can muster up the energy for just one task, brush your teeth.

And if you can't even manage that, chew some sugar-free gum. If nothing else, it will scrub away a bit of the bacteria and catch some stray food that's loose enough to get with the sticky stuff.

But your enamel doesn't grow back and cavities are a bitch.

(I once had seventeen, during my senior(?) year of college. I know. I know. I have been there. The dentistry was hell then, and honestly it still is now: I consider myself lucky if I have less than three fillings that need repair when I go in for a cleaning, and a miracle when there are none. I had to get one tooth pulled due to a failed root canal. I have three current successful root canals in my mouth right now. I have to go get a full mouth x-ray to see what my wisdom teeth are doing so they can all be pulled. Because one is broken and dead, unsaveable. And the other three are on their way there. My first root canal was when I was a teenager. My teeth are mostly fillings. Oh and tooth infections dont go away. They do not and they easily turn very dangerous and need intense antibiotics. The pain will also drive you nigh insane. Get an electric toothbrush as well. It makes it much easier to keep your teeth clean when you dont have the energy to do the brushing motions. It has been doing a lot to save my ass when the depression Unable to Do Things hit again. Brush your teeth. BRUSH. YOUR. TEETH.

Functional Gate Tutorial

The skill level needed for this tutorial is high. You will not get any beginner advice here and I expect you to be good at these needed programs and skills. Youre on your own with the textures, Im just here to explain the mesh and joints/bones. Programs: Blender Sims4Studio TSRW Milkshape 3D Skills Separating a whole mesh into mesh groups How to see, apply joints, and regroup objects in Milkshape 3D Applying Normal Maps, working with Alpha Masks, and adjusting footprints in TSRW Patience, so much patience STEP ONE: So it Begins Firstly pray to a deity of your choice for good luck. If you’re an atheist, threaten tsrw at least once so it knows its place. Secondly choose the gate you want to convert from sims 4 to sims 3. I’m going with the Razzle Dazzle Gate from Realm of Magic. The Sims 3 base I’m choosing is Fence_Pediment balustrade_gate_2x1 tall comp, because it fits the size and has two mesh groups. One for the non-moving part and one for the moving part. That comp is important. If you choose anything else, you won’t get the texture bar. So, make sure your selection includes a comp. Export both LOD1 and LOD2 from Sims4Studio Export LOD1 from TSRW as an obj then as a wso file for the joint guide Chuck the TSRW file, you won’t be seeing this program again for a while. Ignore texture stuff for now, that’s for after the battle with joints and footprint shite. STEP TWO: The Blendering Start a fresh blender file, sacrifice the cube to the Blender Gods, import the sims 3 obj file as your guide. Append both LOD1 and LOD2 from the sims 4 mesh. You will see that the Sims 4 gate meshes are not in line with the Sims 3 one. Select both LOD1 and LOD 2 and move them. Luckily for us, you can move them smack dab in the middle on their Y and X axis by 0.5   Should look like so.

Save this file as BASE. This is gonna be your backup if the splitting bit goes wonky. Open Milkshape 3D and import the wso file. Select Draw Vertices with bone colours. You will see colours tied to three joints. This will help us know how to separate the Sims 4 meshes.

0x87CC8398 – Yellow, right gate 0XE8B7CAFD – Magenta, left gate 0xCD68F001 – Blue, post Back in Blender, duplicate your LOD meshes to prep them for splitting. Personally I made one duplicate to delete the posts from, clearing the gate bit. Then I duplicated that to make the seperated gates. I suggest using the UV map to quickly isolate the posts. I also suggest checking your mesh with the diffuse map visible now and then to see any floating lines/verts easier during clean up process. When choosing what should be a gate or post bit, keep in mind what makes sense to move in the opening swing animation. And make sure with face orientation on you’re deleting the right middle bit of the gate.

Double check the meshes, make double sure there are no surprise floating verts. They will bite you in the arse if there are. Export both LOD groups. (and maybe tidy up the folder for ease of navigation.) STEP THREE: Applying Joints I hope you named your mesh groups so you know what the fuck is going on because if you miss apply joints, your gate is gonna have some funky animations. Keep your head, apply each joint to each part of the gate and refer to the hex codes to select the right joints before hitting that apply button!

You should see this if you did it right.

Now, select both gate groups and hit that nice regroup button to get Regroup01. It will have been punted down to the groups so just move it back up above the post group. Now you can export as a wso file. Repeat for LOD1 STEP FOUR: TSRW Hell Re-open TSRW and make your clone file. I like to do the rename bit as AAAAAAAAAA or PLEASEDEARGODWORK for gate. It depends on my level of desperation that day honestly. When you import your meshes, just hit yes on the bounding box. When you do the shadow bit be sure to select both groups like so

DO NOT CLICK THE TOP ONE OR YOU WILL GET THIS AND YOUR PROJECT WILL CRASH

Oh the mysteries of how this program was cobbled together. I suggest using the calculate from mesh and using the posts to get a nice footprint for this mesh. Renumber, save as the whole shebang. Export to sims3pack and convert to package file because we now have to test this bad boy in game! I love building a lil pen for the sims.

If everything went right, you should see that and we can prep for the texture bit. If not, redo the steps and make sure to double check every step. Also don’t fret if it cant go on diagonal fences – none of EA’s gates can either without moveobjects on.

STEP FOUR: Textures Edit to your liking, slap those babies in, be sure to not forget the normal map, test in game to make sure the alpha mask was not mucked with, and bask in your creation. Celebrate that it works, it is done, and then take a break from the computer for a while.

How to Make Working Fence for Sims 3

Suggested Skill Level: Pretty basic honestly. But this is written with the assumption you know these programs and how to use them. This is also focused on the mesh and getting it into game, in a working state, not textures. Programs needed for the mesh _____________________________ TSRW Sims4Studio Blender Milkshape 3D s3ce (Converting sims3pack to package files) Sims 3 Package editor Art program with dds stuff. (I use Photoshop, GIMP scares me, sorry) _____________________________ STEP ONE: Pick 'n choose wisely, smash 'n grab Pick your fence and your fence base from sims 3. This is the most important bit or else everything will go tits up. Alpha map or no Alpha map.

And whether you are going to choose a fence with glass for this lil thingy, and the fact it has two mesh groups, not just one.

Levels of difficulty, most to least difficult Glass Alpha Map Sans Alpha Map So we are going to do both glass and an alpha map one. :)

Now youre gonna grab these three mesh bits from sims 4 studio and export to blender. LOD 0 - Straight fence LOD 1 - Diagonal fence LOD 2 - Post (In this case for both the Vampire and Spa Day one. On other fences you may have to go further down to even LOD 6 to find the post, so scroll down carefully!) Dont forget the diffuse texture and the specular, keep the specular dds or else TSRW will spit on your face and steal your kidneys. In blender, do your exporting. Remember to tick that selection only box. Behold. Your Bounty.

STEP TWO: Prepping to slam it into TSRW Make your TSRW Base file, remebering to rename the project and title cuz this program is finicky as fuck. Im using the Into the Future Fence because it comes up when you search glass in the search bar. Its mesh groups Group 0: Non glass bit Group 1: Glass In milkshape 3D, import your obj file, select the one mesh group to highlight it. If its the glass, move that boi down. If you grabbed the fence but, shift it up. And then. Just export it as a tsrw object there are no bones/joints praise fucking be!! Repeat for the Vampire fence. Just import, export. What you want is just the, I hope, neatly named Spa fence parts, vampire fence parts, and the diffuse and specular. That is all we need for this.

Now, go back to your TSRW file and head to that mesh panel. You will see this.

Dont fret, just replace it with my handy dandy naming system in your head! Cuz its all it is. ______ High level of detail: Straight fence Modular 1: Diagonal fence Modular 2: The post ______ Import on the straight fence bit and you should see this. This is how you know you did the grouping right.

Finish that importing. Do the whole renumbering shpiel not saving when prompted yadah yadah. Repeat the process with the vampire one. Im using the wrought iron fence because the tall one doesnt show a texture section, for some reason.

Once you set up both files, exit TSRW fully to reset the program and give yourself more time before it runs out of memory but only tells you when you to go fucking save.

You did a good chunk already!! Yay!! Take a moment, breathe. Get yourself a cuppa. Because now its time for STEP THREE: Those Gosh Darn Texture Maps GLASS FENCE You will see that there is no texture for the glass bit, and that is because that mesh bit works entirely on its own internal shaders, unlike Sims 4 that relies on the diffuse map. If you keep the glass texture on the diffuse map, you will run into issues. Open up your diffuse texture and delete the glass texture bit. Repeat with the specular map. (Remember, this is not including how to make a recolourable fence, so we wont be colour editing. Just make a fully red mask as big as the diffuse, and slap it on. If you want, you can also make an overlay file like I did. For funsies. )

You want this! Go through to make sure you dont have duplicate texture files. Save the file to solidify your changes and export to Sims3pack. Congrats! You just made a glass fence! High five! ALPHA MAP FENCE

For this fence you can easily import the diffuse and specular with no edits. But when you make the mask map, clip that layer or else you loose the bit that makes it alpha and its just a hot mess.

YOU WANT THIS FOR ANY FUTURE MASKS YOU MAKE. DONT FORGET. You should see this in the mesh texture bit. Youre good if you do!

Behold your finished alpha mask fence! Save, export, all that jazz. STEP FOUR: We have A Post Issue Convert the sims3packs to package files. Im sorry, but this is non negotiable due to one teeny tiiiny issue.

The fences will look like this if you just click and drag. But fear not! We can easily fix this! Open the package files.

Click CFEN Grid, go to Tile Spacing Turn that 1 to a 0, hit commit. Save the file and tadah!

Problem solved. Now you dont need to deal with posts every single time. STEP FIVE: Practice practice You made functional fences. Draggable, will block routing unless you edit it in the CFEN data grid, and will allow for the placement of gates. Now you just need to practice these steps until they become muscle memory and easy to execute. Go forth, make those fences. And the day I work out double gates' verts, I will release a tutorial on those buggers too.

Build Mode Trick: Textures

You may already know that holding ALT lets you apply wall or floor textures to almost any object in the game, even ones that aren't normally recolourable:

But there's more! ⚠️⚠️⚠️

For whatever reason, these two floor textures make things invisible. By applying them, you can hide parts of all kinds of objects and create some pretty interesting results.

Want to put a plant inside an oversized basket? Fill a bowl with popcorn? Stick toothbrushes in a random mug? Now you can!

I've finished the Brasilia Collection furniture mod for Paralives!

Originally designed by Broyhill and released in 1962, these 5 pieces of mid-century modern design history will look great in any Parahome!

I'm really proud of my first mod for the game! Now that I know what I'm doing, I hope to put out more stuff more quickly, so stay tuned for that!! :D
