The reason AI programs like Gemini are programmed to encourage you to let it make basic life choices for you like what restaurant you should eat at is because they intend to monetize your patronage.
It's just a matter of time before the AI stops offering you the most highly rated option in the area or whatever aligns most closely to what you requested (If it's even doing that now) and instead only recommends restaurants that have paid the company for that privilege.
Restaurants that won't pay Google to recommend them to AI users are going to become functionally invisible, whereas those who are willing to purchase what amounts to targeted advertisements laundered through an AI "friend" will get new customers regardless of their quality.
Basic rule: If you aren't paying for something, that means you're the product.
Google Maps already does this, preferring more distant sponsored results over closer non-sponsored ones. All the claims that these algorithms make the same choices you would make if you just had the time and energy to research them are totally false. They make the choices that lead to profitable results for the companies that program them, with a user interface that gaslights you into thinking it was your idea all along.
You can see this at work already in Google Play store-- you search for an app, and the only time the app you're looking for is the top result is when the company behind the app has paid for the privilege-- in which case you'll see it twice.
You can also see this at work on Amazon, when searching by exact product name can sometimes put your result on the second or third page, while you scroll through alternatives that Amazon wants to sell you.
Etsy is also deeply terrible for this

More and more of the locals don’t want it because of how it’ll destroy the area even though they’ve been offered a lot of money for their land and promised jobs. None of the scientists who work in the area want it. South America like Chile/Bolivia/Peru/Ecuador/etc etc etc are such unique and old places. The ecology in South America is so special and has species that are nowhere else in the world. The landscape is unusual and special. The people there have been able to maintain traditions despite colonization in a lot of cases. The artifacts there are priceless, we’ve lost so so so much to colonization, knowledge, architecture, culture, artifacts. These areas are delicate and need protection. A lot of the governments in South America have corruption, like anywhere else. The people and land are constantly sacrificed. The Atacama desert in Chile has so so much to protect and they’re mining nonstop for copper, polluting water, evicting eighty year olds and disabled people to make way for construction, piping away their water and plowing through a delicate desert ecosystem. There’s a clothes dump so big there you can see it from space
There’s so so much to lose in South America. If you visit the altiplano in Bolivia, there are native farmers living out there essentially off grid. Chile has many indigenous groups still despite being so industrialized. We still have Quechua, Aymara and Mapuche being spoken every day. The landscape MATTERS to us. It breaks my heart to see the land so disrespected and ruined. The people are connected to the land. You can talk to almost any indigenous group and they’ll tell you the same thing. It’s a cultural thing that was passed down for thousands of years. The shapes the mountains make against the sky, the way a lake sits between the hills, flocks of guanaco and vicuña grazing. The landscape is sacred and old
I know there are ecological battles everywhere right now with the rich and powerful crushing anyone in their way. I just had to say something because this hits so close to home and I ache thinking about my homelands being destroyed beyond recognition. I’m haunted by the sculpture in the middle of Inca ruins that’s an exact tiny replica of the mountains on the opposite side of the valley. The very shape of the rocks is special to us

update on this, if people want to reblog this to spread information to any trans person who is getting their gender marker changed with social security after the executive order:
today i went and was able to change my gender marker along with my name with social security. even though the page that guides you has been taken down you are STILL ABLE to do so. here is a link to the way back machine for the page and here is a link to the form you will need and here is another source that can help you prepare for federal crackdowns
don't be deterred by the removal of the page. there is still time, but possibly not a lot of it. if you can do this fast, do it.
it's worth noting that it's FREE to change your gender marker with social security. when you change your gender marker with social security, what you change it to does NOT have to match your other current IDs.
double check your state policies, and what you will personally need, but the overall message of this post is that there is STILL TIME despite the executive order. don't give up hope.
As someone who works for SS - YES! I just encountered this recently, it was heartbreaking to notice that they’ve so quickly removed that from the website when people are calling in asking me to help…
But since they might fire me anyway — since they’ve decided it’s better for them to be ableist and eliminate work from home, and possibly all probationary employees there under 1 year — let me say this: all you need to do is fill out the application for a new social security card and you can make changes such as name and gender marker. The SS-5 is the correct form, and it’s available on our website. If you want to schedule an appointment or would prefer a paper version of the application, call the national 800 number (800)-772-1213. The hold times are long, but there’s a call back option where you can opt to be put in a queue and a CSR will call back. You would just have to say you need a new SS card for a name change or a replacement card and that you’d like an appointment. All local offices are refusing walk in service, so if you just go to your office they’ll turn you away. I also would recommend this if submitting the application to the drop box outside the office or mailing it in makes you nervous, but if mailing it in is your preferred way we can send you one to your email or physical mail (would be about 10 business days) plus it’s on the website under Forms, or if you keyword search. ((Offering these options to anyone who knows others not as comfortable with internet but still want to go through the process of getting anything changed, plus the online application gives people errors sometimes))

There’s a spot on our website for an office locator that offers the ability to find other public assistance offices if you’re in need and not able to access those phone numbers. It locates local services by zip code. AND if you’ve ever been refused social security or wrongly treated by someone for a disability hearing etc, we have appeal forms. If you need to appeal but don’t know if you can afford legal representation, you can call us for that too. We can ask your local office to send out a mailed copy of local affordable representation.
Feel free to PM or anything with whatever yall might need and I may have an answer or I can research during my breaks or ask someone above me in the chain regarding policy
(If anyone is having issues with Medicaid you’ll want to try and reach your local public services/welfare/medicaid office directly, and that office locator on SSA.gov will help find that phone number by zip code if you need to find it that way, especially if we can’t continue to trust google or the AI that may come up or repress the correct information etc.)
