Does it count as 'sword in the stone' if it looks more like 'sword in the cairn'...?
so many people ive known have pushed themselves to burnout trying to deny their disabled reality, skipping accommodations, skipping rests etc. and the world convinces them that the solution to their burnout is to push even harder. it’s a huge tragedy. i know social pressures make it tough but i want more disabled people to make things easier for themselves where possible, to opt out of things that harm them when possible, to quit while they’re ahead. be that person today! protect yourself where you can! take micro breaks while doing your hobby. get that shower chair. sit to brush your teeth. lie down in the middle of the day, even if only for 5 mins. these things add up and it’s so worth it.
happy disability pride month! ACCOMMODATE YOURSELF TODAY!
you know what really helps you locate any small paper cuts you might have forgotten you have? putting your hand in a bucket of acid. cool things I learned today
Why. If I may ask. Why would you Do That
I buy citric acid crystals in bulk and mix them with water to make a bath for cleaning aquarium equipment. and then sometimes I reach in with my bare hand to take things out because I am fundamentally the kind of person who would do that
You have. The. Dream job
this is not my job, I just have an aquarium
DO YOU HAVE FISH????
yes that is who lives in the aquarium
this has the energy of a world heritage post
do I come to your blog and curse your bloodline
Fun Fact:
We tend to notice acid burns faster than base burns, but bases actually penetrate deeper into the epithelium (outermost tissue layer). It is hypthesized this is because acid damage closer to the surface can impact pain and temperature nerve endings so we have more "too much! pain! too much!" sensation. However, chemical burns from basic chemicals can do far more damage. Consider, for example, the impact to your skin touching bleach (pH 12) vs lemon juice (pH 2). If consumed, one makes a tasty treat and the other might become your last meal.
The recent hot VS cold polls have made me realise that a lot of people have no idea how to cool down.
As someone from a hot country that's regularly on fire, here's some tips:
WATER IS YOUR FRIEND! WATER! IS! YOUR! FRIEND! You can transfer SO much heat into this bad boy! You cannot cool down without water!
Wrists under the cold tap. Splash your face and the back of your neck. Fan yourself.
In some countries you can buy a little handeld fan with a water sprayer.
Damp tea towel around the neck. Stick an ice pack in there on hotter days.
Half fill a water bottle with water, stick in freezer. If you use a bottle with a straw, make sure it's lying on its side with the straw side up and out of the water. When frozen top up the rest of the way with tap water and off you go.
Desperate to cool off? Wet T-shirt. Sit in front of a fan. This will nuke it, just don't get hypothermia and don't fall asleep like this.
Cold showers are also your friend in summer. Some people get psyched up by these. Personally, I sleep like a baby, so I'm good to have them before bed. Just keep in mind that it takes a bit of time for the cool to circulate, so your body will tell you that you're colder than you actually are. I find that when I have cold showers I need to step out of the spray when I think I'm cold... I'll just wait, and thirty seconds later the temperature has evened out and I actually need to step under again. Rinse and repeat until you maintain coolness even after stepping out for a bit.
If you can't do cold showers, turn the cold shower on anyway and just stick your arms under. When they're cold, lift your arms up above your head. The sensation of cool blood draining into your body is fucking weird and kinda unpleasant but less unpleasant than being hot.
Feet in a tub of water with ice. Blood naturally flows to your extremities when hot, so take advantage of this. If you don't have a tub of ice water, sticking a wet rag on your feet in front of the fan works too, it's the less powerful version of the wet T-shirt.
Drinks lots of water but make sure that water has electrolytes as well. Stay in the shade.
Keep air circulating. Fans don't actually cool rooms down, they just help transfer heat from your body to the moisture on your skin or the air via evaporative cooling.
Block north facing windows early in the morning so the sun doesn't get in. If you're in the northern hemisphere, this is opposite for you. Keep in mind that if your home is brick, the bricks will still heat up and slowly release heat into your home even after the sun goes down so this will only do so much.
If it's hotter inside than outside, close all your windows but two, making sure they're on opposite sides of the house/unit you're in. Point a fan out of one window, making sure that the doors between the rooms with the open windows are all open. This will help create a mini pressure system in your home, pulling cooler air in and pushing the hotter air out via the fan. Bonus points if you can get that fan high up where the hot air rises; even within a single room the top is much hotter than the air by the floor. Adjust the amount of open windows based on how many fans you have, but generally you want more windows with fans open than windows without fans to keep the pressure correct.
Obviously, use your common sense for these. Not everything WILL work for you, just use the stuff that does and adjust what needs to be adjusted. Some of these will be impossible to use in the workplace but others you can still use. Others are best used at home. If humidity impacts your ability to use any of these, get a dehumidifier if that's an option, or use more ice instead of evaporation.
Also keep in mind that the skinnier you are, the faster these will work. More fat means more insulation, means more heat, so you may need to be more patient with some of these or use them in combination.
Bringing this back for my dying mutuals
Some extra tips:
For folks in apartments or small spaces that get less air flow, that little fan in the bathroom near the ceiling is amazing at sucking out hot air.
You can rapidly cool a space w/o AC by laying a damp cloth over the back side of a fan. If you haven't figured it out yet my friends, evaporative cooling is the key here
If you have to be out in the heat/sun, wear light colors and lightweight fabrics that fit loosely to your body.
When the temps get above 100F/38C and there's not much wind, maintaining a pocket of air btn your skin and the outside air will keep you cooler than wearing less clothes. This is when long billowy sleeves, lightweight scarves, and loose fitting trousers/skirts come in.
This is a great time to go hang out in the library! Check which municipal buildings or universities have air conditioning. Many countries will set up Cooling Centers during dangerous heat waves.
Avoid cooking hot foods indoors. Use a BBQ, plan cold meals, etc. If you have to cook, pressure cookers (Instapots), slow cookers, and cooking at night will help keep you from overheating.
Fastest way to cool your brain is holding ice or a cool wet cloth against the side of your neck. This will cool the blood flowing through your carotid artery.
Know the difference btn overheating/heat exhaustion vs heat stroke! If someone looks out of it or passes out with a strong pulse and hot dry skin get immediate medical help. As horrible as it feels, if you're still sweating you're still okay.

“Why are you scared of dating” I’m not scared of dating, I just haven’t found anyone’s company to be more enjoyable than my own. And also I don’t care
I just don't want anyone to steal my very cursed amulet
Also the amulet
Is that you talking? Or the amulet? Are you SURE a new hand doesn't want to touch the beacon?
The amulet and I are not currently looking for a third
I saw this perfectly in my head and had to recreate it
Holy Shit
No matter what a post on tumblr tries to tell you, your moral and ethical stances will never be determined by what you reblog and what you scroll past. Don’t let manipulation tactics force you into doing anything you don’t want to do.
I find it very interesting to note the times in which this post has a sudden resurgence. It often follows very stressful, upsetting events, where a lot of “REBLOG THIS OR YOU SUCK” posts start appearing on this site.
So I’ll say it again: it is okay if you come to tumblr to escape upsetting news. It is okay if you’re just here for fun and fandom. It is okay if you do not want to use your tumblr as a place to read about or spread the current events that are circulating. It is okay if you need a place to decompress and just relax. There are other ways to be involved in/support causes and you are allowed to set boundaries on social media platforms without it being indicative of your belief systems.
Your beliefs, values, ethics, and moral stances are not determined by whether or not you reblog something.
Trees, like animals, can also experience albinism, though it is extremely rare.
the reason it’s rare is because without chlorophyll, the plant can’t get energy, and dies shortly after sprouting unless it has some other source of food. so if you see a plant as big as the one in the picture that doesn’t have any green in its leaves, it’s getting its nutrition from the roots of a neighboring plant of the same species, feeding on the sugars created by the other plant’s photosynthesis.
albino plants are basically vampires.
For a long time, scientists thought they were parasites, and couldn’t figure out why the bigger plants didn’t release chemicals to kill them.
Turns out, the lil’ ghost redwoods benefit their hosts by filtering toxins and acting as a sort of backup immune system.
They’re vampires, and they’re commensal, symbiotic mutualists!
this is super cool! I had no idea
This is among the coolest things I’ve ever seen.
we’ve already discovered forests where trees share nutrients with young or disadvantaged trees and forests where trees can ask their neighbors for some extra food (they literally send a signal requesting aid, via the web of fungus that connects their roots) and forests where surrounding tees will keep a tree alive even when it has been reduced to a stump through some tragedy…
so, while i love the playfulness of “vampire” and i commend the specificity of “commensal, symbiotic mutualists” i think it’s worth considering, at this point, if “member of the community” might not be at least as apt
It should be noted that forest root networks share resources among plants of Different species as well. Most fungi show preferences for certain plant and tree species, but they typically connect to Multiple species. If the fungi only connect to one species and a catastrophe targets that plant (Dutch Elm, Im looking at you), the fungi is SOL. So forming connections with multiple plant species protects the fungus too.
This is not just a system that benefits one type of tree or shrub over another. This is a system where the entire forest benefits from sharing resources between multiple plant species via multiple fungal species!

Now I understand why moose are built the way they are.
It’s so they can gallop untrammelled through six-odd feet of snow.
