it's only recently I learned that the 'mog' part of 'mogging' stands for 'male of group' (shortened from 'alpha male of group'). so the definition of 'mogging' as like, being deemed superior to someone else in some way or another is using manhood as synonymous with relational superiority.

this was obvious subtext anyway (the whole ideology in which the term emerges is a male supremacist one) but learning it's so explicit and unambiguous was kind of surprising. doubly so since this term is already starting the process of integrating into general usage outside this subculture, first as "ironic," then as decontextualized ("it's just outshining someone!"), and eventually probably as sincere.

casual reminder that it is probably best to not adopt the misogynistic concept of conveying hierarchical superiority in interpersonal contexts as "funny internet slang."

and I've said this before but if you are negotiating specific acts in a sexual/kinky situation, there is very little confusion because the meaning is typically clear from context. if someone says they're a "rope top" I am not going to assume they want to penetrate someone with rope; likewise they are not going to call themself a "rope dom" because that is stupid and may add unintentional implications (I would read this maybe as "someone who uses tying specifically as an element of domination" whereas "rope top" would simply mean "person doing the tying," which could have additional d/s elements but also could be "person in your bedroom tying you up following instructions from a book while you both giggle").

This is legitimately useful reframing. A while ago I started replacing the word "cop" in my vocabulary with "a man with a gun." It really puts things into perspective.

It makes it very clear what you're saying. I can call a man with a gun to threaten or hurt someone mildly inconveniencing me. You're not calling the cops, you're calling A MAN WITH A GUN into a situation that does not warrant a firearm handled by a volatile lunatic who will not be held accountable for his actions.

it's okay if you've done this in the past. maybe just check in before you call your friend or acquaintance something with so many specific, potentially disheartening associations!

I wonder if the inverse occurs with trans women getting called "butch" too. because there are many wonderful butch trans women!!! but if you call trans women "butches" for traits like short hair or body hair despite otherwise feminine presentation, maybe think about why that is? is she really a butch? or is that just her body? just ask first!

nonbinary people too. are they really "masc presenting" or is that just their body? are they really "fem presenting" or is that just their body? let's all try to be a bit more cognisant of the language we use to describe the trans people in our lives, yeah? [: it's worth thinking about. don't worry yourself into a hole about it, of course! but it's something to check every now and then.
