"it's ok to show (x) in fiction as long as the bad guy gets punished!" the bad guy doesn't have to get punished. in fact the bad guy can win altogether. the bad guy can entirely get away with it. hope this helps

and this part might make some people's head explode but: characters can be written to forgive things you personally wouldn't ever forgive. not everything is written as what you'd perceive to be the right choice. not everything is a self-insert & protagonists don't have to be relatable.

Nor is she a seductress in any kind of negative or manipulative sense - she has a mutual relationship with a powerful man who then breaks up with her, and afterwards she keeps protection against him in the form of evidence that the relationship existed. She HAS blackmail material, she even waves it at him threateningly because he treated her like shit, but she never even uses it.

Irene Adler is not a thief, femme fatale, or blackmailer. She's just a cool lady that wants to be left alone.

If your Sherlock Holmes adaptation has a character whose identifying qualities are that she is a seductive criminal in love with Holmes, you have created a character that is basically the literal opposite of Irene Adler and you should name her something else.

She's also -- and I cannot stress this enough -- from New Jersey. IMO this is the single most important detail missing from all the adaptations -- IRENE ADLER IS FROM NEW JERSEY.

The thing about rereading the weird Sherlock Holmes pastiches that I loved as a teen and have kept on my bookshelf since then but haven't read in 20 years is that I have absolutely no idea if they're, y'know, good. There are goofy things you love as a kid that you will never gain objectivity about, and my collection of mostly-Moriarty-focused* fanfic novels is one of those things. (This is also how I feel about Lovecraft and certain fantasy novels, including but not limited to the Legends Trilogy from Dragonlance - my perceptions of these things are biased and absolutely not to be trusted.)

I cannot in good conscience recommend any of my collection to other people, but I want you to know that I am kicking my little feet in glee while rereading them.

*Really, only about half of it is Moriarty-focused. The other half is silly crossovers, books about bees that got made into very bad horror films**, and that one really weird one with the time travel.

...actually, I think Moriarty is in that one too.

**My fellow MST3K fans will perhaps recall The Deadly Bees. The movie, alas, cuts out the Holmesian bits.

Another one for Inuit artists is Piqsiq! Two sisters who’ve been doing traditional throat singing since they were kids. They make some really gorgeous, eerie, atmospheric stuff. Highly recommend watching this video of them performing live a cappella using a looping machine, because they might be the coolest people on the planet actually

For anyone into North Asian and Central Asian folk music, there's this incredible Siberian folk-pop band called Otyken! The group is mostly women and they're from multiple indigenous groups in Siberia, with songs being sung in their range of different languages. They're so much fun and their music videos are amazing!
