All About Me

Hey! I've been on Tumblr for a while now, but I've finally gotten around to doing an intro post.

So, my name is Laura Hill, and I'm a daughter of η Καλλιόπη (Calliope).

I'm a demigod, but I don't have dyslexia or ADHD (well, maybe on the ADHD or something similar. definitely don't have dyslexia). HOWEVER, I have trouble reading Greek words in the Latin alphabet (like the gods' names), so I'll be putting the words in Greek, and then the English translation in brackets.

I've got 5 beads on my Camp necklace now, I've gone on a quest, and been to ο Όλυμπος (Olympus), so I can probably answer most of your Riordanverse questions.

I enjoy reading, particularly fantasy and historical fiction, so there'll be the occasional posts about that, as well as my usual Riordanverse posts.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions you have about the Riordanverse (posts about those will be tagged as #musesdaughter explains), clarifying things about canon, how things have changed since, and how things work. However, I probably won't be able to answer all your questions, because I don't know everything. But I can always ask around.

I have a Wattpad acc and an AO3 acc, and I'll link to those whenever I post fics.

Oh, also, you'll probably see me mention someone called Yelaina a lot. She's my best friend, a daughter of ο Θάνατος (Thanatos), and has been at Camp since she was 3, learning and training and fighting in the background from 'The Titan's Curse' onwards.

I love when you can tell that a creator had a certain aspect of a character planned out since the beginning, and even though I don't think Flanny always had Halt being a prince planned, I do think he most likely came up with that later on, I love how Halt was always supposed to be Hibernian (Irish), literally since he said his first lines.

#I'm not Flanny (or am I) #and I've never talked to him aside from telling him about Cralt #but I just have a feeling halt being a prince was not planned #it's just this vibe I get

#I think theres a possibility it was planned since book three #when halt lied to deparneiux or however you spell that french boys name about being third in line #and then flanny was like “hang on that could be interesting”#or he was just thinking of a cool backstory after he wrote that book and remembered that “lie” halt told #and thought it would be cool if it was canon

#but then again I can also imagine Flanny planning it from the beginning #because him being Hibernian was always a thing #and a lot of halts behaviour towards royalty and nobels can be explained through trauma from his home #I just have a feeling that's not exactly how it went #I should email him again

As an autistic/adhd person going through the job search process I’ve learned to phrase my autistic/adhd traits as corporate friendly things. Here’s some examples:

I have trouble reading between the lines and picking up on implicit information? Actually, I’ve learned the importance of giving and receiving precise, specific instructions in order to avoid time consuming miscommunications.

I’m easily bored with only one task? Actually, I have a curious mind and thrive in places with a wide range of tasks as I prefer dynamic environments where I can contribute to many projects.

I have trouble with white lies that are merely social niceties? Actually, I prioritize a transparent work environment where we can tackle issues head-on.

This way I don’t have to lie, but rather just spin my truth in a way that’s palatable to them.

I’ve been in fandom since *about* when Panic! formed and the adjective!character thing was already going strong, pretty sure it predates them.

It’s a way of referring to particular variations of (usually) a character — dark!Will, junkie!Sherlock, et cetera. I have suspected for a while that it originated from some archive system that didn’t accommodate spaces in its tags, so to make common interpretations/versions of the characters searchable, people started jamming the words together with an infix.

(Lately I’ve seen people use the ! notation when the suffix isn’t the full name, but is actually the second part of a common fandom portmanteau. This bothers me a lot but it happens, so it’s worth being aware of.)

“Bang paths” (! is called a “bang"when not used for emphasis) were the first addressing scheme for email, before modern automatic routing was set up. If you wanted to write a mail to the Steve here in Engineering, you just wrote “Steve” in the to: field and the computer sent it to the local account named Steve. But if it was Steve over in the physics department you wrote it to phys!Steve; the computer sent it to the “phys” computer, which sent it in turn to the Steve account. To get Steve in the Art department over at NYU, you wrote NYU!art!Steve- your computer sends it to the NYU gateway computer sends it to the “art” computer sends it to the Steve account. Etc. (“Bang"s were just chosen because they were on the keyboard, not too visually noisy, and not used for a huge lot already).

It became pretty standard jargon, as I understand, to disambiguate when writing to other humans. First phys!Steve vs the Steve right next to you, just like you were taking to the machine, then getting looser (as jargon does) to reference, say, bearded!Steve vs bald!Steve.

So I’m guessing alternate character version tags probably came from that.

100% born of bang paths. fandom has be floating around on the internet for six seconds longer than there has been an internet so early users just used the jargon associated with the medium and since it’s a handy shorthand, we keep it.
