Happy Fucking Moon Day
saw this suddenly get a flurry of notes which means it is once again fucking moon day! Happy fucking moon day, everyone.
hello all, it's Fucking Moon Day Monday
being a writer is fun
I've been on a bit ob a Russell Crowe movie binge in the past few weeks and since he is almost sixty now, many of the movies I've watched were consequently older movies. and when I watched them, it struck me again, how much hollywood has changed in the last few decades when it comes to depicting men.
take Gladiator for example from the year 2000. Russell Crowe plays basically an action hero in it. he is a big, muscly dude, who is very strong and uses that strength to defeat his enemies. and this is what he looks like:
looks like a strong man, right?
in the same year, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine looked like this in the first X-men movie:
in 2013 the same character played by the same actor looked like this:
it's a bit much, isn't it? I mean, he looks so skinny.
and if we go even further back: look at what the womanizer character Face from the A-team looked like in the 80s show vs the 2010 movie reboot:
maybe the difference isn't that big but it really startled me when I watched that movie for the first time. in my mind there was no reason why Face should be particularly muscular since he is the charming one not the one known for being particularly strong.
if we go even further back, look at the charmin womanizer character Hawkeye in M*A*S*H from the 70's.
I know he's a doctor and there is no reason for him to be ripped but I got the feeling if they did the show now, he would be.
I don't know what my point really is I'm just saying I got a bit nostalgic when watching these men. I cannot be the only one who'd rather see more of this:
than this:
also, as a sidenote: Russell Crowe gained a lot of weight for the nice guys and he is a fucking powerhouse in that film, like, when he punches someone, you really feel it because of the weight that is behind it and the shere mass of his body.
(even if this may look different, he's about to break Ryan Gosling's character's arm. I couldn't find a gif of him punching someone but I swear it looks painfull as hell.)
so, in short: can we get big, heavy action guys back? cause I'm tired of seeing these skinny, despite being muscular dudes who look dehydrated as hell and on steroids.
and can we stop making characters ripped just for the sake of it? cause I'd rather cuddle with a guy looking like Hawkeye than one looking like Face from the new A-team movie.

"There's no platonic explanation for this" <-you need to be nicer to your friends. Right now

Padawan braids should be far more decorated I don't care
I want them to have beads and bows and jewels and rings and bells and-
I want them to scream culture, to scream tradition, to scream history!!!
Eheheheeh here is my redesign for the Padawan braid!
Oh and the bells arenât actual bells, they make no sound, they are called bells due to an old tradition no longer in use
And if anyone wants to use this idea, or some aspects of it, DO IT!!! Use this concept however you like!! Go and create your own braids!!!!!!!!
Okay, so. Star Wars has all these concepts that weirdo New Left boomer George Lucas tosses in there but because of storyteller limitations it would kill the plot to fully explain them all, so later writers have to come in for the spin-off materials and bat clean-up to fully explain all this crazy crap. And I would like to talk about something that made me actively angry at first, but which I now adore. And that is the Naboo.
So much about Naboo culture is infuriating from a logical standpoint. They have a queen, okay. A constitutionally elected queen? Weird, okay. Don't know why they'd do that but... She's FOURTEEN? Excuse me? Is it a ceremonial thing or, oh no it's not? Legit head of state? Why does she dress like that? Why does she talk like that? I'm so tired.
Here's the explainer. Let me go cook.
There's this joke in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy where the last living human goes back in time and finds out humans aren't actually from Earth, but an alien culture that tricked all the middle managers, pedantic weirdos, and other infuriating folk into getting in a space arc which they gave the wrong evacuation coordinates to simply get rid of them. The Naboo are like this but they're all artists and poets and hippies, but like classy ones. They fled their home planet during a war and crash landed on Naboo, then did a colonism to the Gungans because, hey, they were fleeing a war and it was do or die. This spiritual rot in their creation story is later rectified by Padmé. But it's super important to their cultural psychology. They're hippies, but will subjugate if needed. They are "peaceful" but I guarantee you every single one of them has a tiny extremely shiny pistol up their sleeve and they will draw down on you if backed against a wall.
The scene that I think says it all is at the end of Phantom Menace when Padmé is surrounded by Nute Gunray and his droids, they've got her dead to rights, but Sabé her double creates a distraction so the queen can make it to her throne. This one piece of furniture is the Naboo in a nutshell. It's richly carved with artistic details, it has two seats to the side so the queen's handmaidens can read the lips of people in the back of the room and use hand signals to communicate with the queen while she can remain focused mostly on who is speaking to her. It is hundreds of years old. And it has a secret compartment in the armrest that is FULL OF GUNS. Layers of artistic opulence hiding their true intentions.
The Naboo were created to be backwards compatible with Princess Leia. They're compassionate pacifists, but they will shot you if needed.
Why do they elect teenage royalty? It's a little creepy. It's giving "age of consent is emotional maturity". It makes no sense.
The explanation they give outsiders is they want youthful idealism untainted by cynicism. What they don't tell you is that they take kids with stated interest in politics and put them in an advanced highly competitive Leadership Academy which is like Model UN mixed with Battle Royale. Well, they don't kill each other but it's intense. It's like what the clones went though just all diplomacy training and tea ceremonies all the time. Which is crazy but so Naboo.
Oh, and all the delegates for the royalty election run using pseudonyms for security. Imagine voting for the head of state but you can't run a background check. It's so crazy.
Why does Padmé dress like that? Well, fashion is one of Naboo's major industries so it's like she's wearing the entire Fall line catalog at once. To advertise not only the talent of her people, but to show how much they favor her. BUT that dress has multiple layers of padding and resin armor. And aforementioned spots for those little silver blasters. And it breaks up her silhouette making her harder to shoot. And it's so elaborate you pay more attention to the crazy dress and not if the person wearing it is really the queen or a decoy. Everything about Naboo is like this.
Queen Amidala has that weird accent while Padmé does not. Because all her handmaidens helped create the accent together so they all can imitate it. It's like if you gave girls at a rowdy sleepover the job of federal counterintelligence. That's what they came up with.
The handmaidens wear colorful identical clothes so you can't tell them apart, hoods to partially conceal their identity, and they don't wear the queen's fancy makeup. So one of them can be the queen and spy on people in the audience. Because the Naboo don't trust shit for shit.
Their public face is so silly to hide all the truly weird shit they do behind the scenes.
They use their reputation as artist hippies to conceal multiple layers of subterfuge and disguise their methods of self defense and assuage their paranoia due to wartime trauma and their disturbing colonial past. All of them are completely off their rocker even by Star Wars standards. And I love them so much. They put on a show so everyone thinks they have them figured out but what they have going on is far more weirder and more sinister than meets the eye. You know how catty, neurotic, and competitive art school students stereotypically are? Yeah, planet art student. Love them!
There you go, @charmwasjess

I WISH THAT WANTING IT BADLY WAS ENOUGH TO MAKE IT REAL
Green Lantern (1990) #48
Timeline of Naruto Universe
For my own purposes, I want to sort out a timeline for how Iâd like to believe the events unfolded, starting with the founding of the villages as Year 0. There are a lot of contradictory statements about how old people are, when the village wouldâve existed, etc. One clear example: I have to disregard the statement that Hashirama became Hokage 67 years prior to Narutoâs events. Since he was Hokage at the time of Madaraâs defection, it was actually 74 years prior to Part II at minimum that Hashirama became Hokage, based on the ages of Hashiramaâs grandchildren.Â
So a lot of this is going to be 1) pure conjecture and 2) selective reasoning. Itâs also not going to pay much mind to birthdays aside from their year date, as that might make this overly complicated. Itâs a fruitless endeavour, really, but I thought itâd be fun to try to make sense of it all. Below the dates I have character ages where it is useful or relevant, as well as notes on how it fits into the narrative/in respect to other established dates. Iâm sure there are better and more precise ones that exist, but this oneâs mostly just for me anyway.
So without further ado, hereâs my timeline:
Year 0: Konohagakure is founded; village system establishedÂ
Characters: Hashirama and Madara approx. age 25
Notes: Konoha is founded in the years following Izunaâs death, who is approximately 24 when he dies. Madara and Hashirama both appear to be 1-2 years older than their siblings based on their appearances as children.

Genuinely, why the hell didnât Naruto get promoted after the Chuunin Exams?
Like in the first part, he inspired a lot of people, which Ibiki stated outright was what he wanted from a chuunin. In the second part, he survived fucking Orochimaru. In the third part, he beat Neji, aka the best Konoha genin at the exam.
Then in the Sand and Sound Invasion, he beat Gaara, aka the most dangerous person there (even more than Orochimaru in terms of how much damage he could, like flattening the city as Kyuubi did only a dozen years ago).
So why the hell did they not promote him? If itâs because they didnât have a Hokage, then how did Shikamaru get promoted? Anyway I just think itâs complete bullshit for Naruto to still be a genin in Shippuden.
Dragons in Chinese culture are forces of good.
Dragons in The Journey to the West are forces of good but also invite demons - such as the Bull Demon King - to their underwater parties.
Cang Qiong Mountain Sect is a very important place and the fact that their peak lords have a tradition of ascending as one means that they are effectively a baby-god-producing factory and thus the peak lords and their heirs would get invited to parties because of diplomacy.
Mobei-Jun genuinely thinks he has been courting Airplane for a long time.
What I'm saying is Airplane is damned lucky to have never gotten caught at a party when he - according to CQMS - wasn't supposed to be there.
Additionally:
These events can be happening simultaneously.
Or Airplane might accidentally be getting a reputation as party-exploders because it just. keeps. happening.
Mobei-Jun's just annoyed his beloved's acquaintences and family keep ruining their dates.
Of course, just because Yue Qingyuan, Shen Qingqiu, and Shang Qinghua come from the peaks most likely to go to parties diplomatically doesn't mean those are the only peak lords/peak heirs invited to parties...
(Strictly speaking Prince is Wangzi çć, not just Wang ç which is king, but Wang is - if I understand correctly - an acceptable term when you've got an emperor or ruling parent outranking you. Let me know if I've got that wrong, and my apologies if so.)m
Speaking of consequences, the Lord of An Ding Peak and Shizun to Shang Qinghua is having a time.
#consider: sqh being invited to the same party both by cqms and mbj and playing collateral <- prev tags
Excellent contribution!
Look, it's not Qingge's fault he got involved in this. He was just innocently hunting some demons who were causing havoc and followed one of them in. He didn't even know it was a party.
#Several generations of previous anding lords foaming at the mouth thinking of all the Good Trade they'll get when head disciple shang scores#Cheer us sqh maybe you can spin this to look non-traitorous#(meanwhile mbj was already planning the wedding) <- prev tags
The thing about Airplane when he runs into people he knows at parties he's supposedly not at/supposed to be at, is that he never makes things easier for himself:
Unrelatedly: the reblogs have made a necklace!
Hey, @many-eyed-monster , this inspired me. đ
It's important to remember that while Airplane is an anxious coward, he's also a trolling millennial obnoxious piece of shite (affectionate).
Shang Qinghua sits with the deities one time out of nervous-panic indecision at not being able to figure out whether he should sit with Mobei Jun or the CQMS delegation, immediately realizes what he's done and is half expecting the deities to smite him, but they're just like yeah good we cannot believe you snubbed us at the last party! Stay there!
Iemitsu and Tsuna doesn't talk this Iemitsu this and that, people please it is just a case of miscommunication between an extreme extrovert puppy and an introvert cat got awkward, Iemitsu does try to bond with Tsuna he just doesn't push it and doesn't bond with Tsuna the way Tsuna wants.
If anything Tsuna is the one avoid conversation here because he thinks his dad is useless not cool guy and later in Rainbow arc he can't match this image with the guy who going around confidently ordering and having people obeys him. That's the whole talk Reborn shoves into Tsuna's mind how can you miss that?
Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo weâve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and itâs revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.
Might I add:
The defeat of the wizard who made people choose how theyâd be to be executed
The woman who raised the changeling alongside her biological child
The human who died of radiation poisoning after repairing the spaceship
The adventures of a space roomba

A JL guide to Green Lanterns: warnings and advice.
Or, me pushing forward my "Green Lanterns are Eldritch Horrors" agenda. I saw someone make this with the concept of Lady Gotham and Cryptid Batfam, so I'm stealing the idea.
The ring is not something they wear, it's a part of them, they are one thing. They can take it off if necessary, but only on their terms. Don't, for any reason, try to take it away from them with violence. No one can guarantee your survival.
When around them, pay attention and have quick reflexes. Their toughts may turn into physical constructs, and in a direct collision your bones will lose. On the same note, it's better to avoid sleeping lanterns. Some things that come out of their dreams will give you nightmares of your own.
If they ask you to enter your city, they have a good reason for it. Let them in and do their job, they don't want to be there just as much as you. They usually don't stay long anyway, here or any place on Earth.
They will forget and confuse things and events. Be patient with them, remind them what year, month and day it is. Keeping a "what you may have missed while in space" list may help avoid embarassing conversations.
No, their eyes weren't green before. Don't say anything, eventually it'll pass.
They may start making sounds impossible for the human vocal apparatus. Don't panick, it's probably an alien language. The ring creates temporary new organs so they can do that. Kindly remind them what species you are and proceed with the conversation.
If a lantern brings you a gift, always double check with other senior League members of it's safety. Lanterns may think it's a cute gift but remember, what it's cute for them is probably deadly for you.
Will is apart of the emotional spectrum. Senior lanterns can perceive your emotional state. Whatever you're feeling, they know it, it's useless to lie.
If you upset them, their physical form may falter. Do not touch them, pure will is a kind of unstable energy and it will hurt you. Also, objects may start flying.
Genetic Analyzers and others similar devices won't recognize their DNA. The fusion with the ring has permanently changed their biology. They are not totally human anymore, but it would be sensible to avoid reminding them of that.
Yes, their blood is green. Yes, they can heal themselves the majority of times, but if any of them insist that they can replace any vital organ with a construct, don't let them. They are already more will than flesh, remind them that we have, in fact, a medbay!
Every once in a while jog their memory on the fact that sleeping, eating and drinking are things that they still need to do on the regular. For now.
For telepaths and other similarly powered metas: Don't try and enter their minds. Any interference with their willpower will be noted and won't be taken kindly. They have a very high resistance to mental control and it would be cautious to remember, they have some of their own. Your memories are not safe.
Don't drink from their glasses unless you're certain that the liquid is drinkable for humans. Their bodies can handle space alcohol and drinks, yours probably cannot. Same goes for food.
In case of a mind-controlled-super, please remind them that the kryptonite is not a toy, not even in small doses. Creating a baseball bat made of kryptonite is overkill.
If you're invited to spar with a lantern, remember, they were trained by aliens far physically stronger than them. They know how to hurt you without using the ring.
The no kill rule is an illusion. They are the ring and the ring is them, they decide which rules to abide to. If they truly want to, each and every one of our resident lanterns can end your life. Never forget it.
Random Headcanon: That Federation vessels in Star Trek seem to experience bizarre malfunctions with such overwhelming frequency isnât just an artefact of the television serial format. Rather, itâs because the Federation as a culture are a bunch of deranged hyper-neophiles, tooling around in ships packed full of beyond-cutting-edge tech they donât really understand. Endlessly frustrating if you have to fight them, because they can pull an effectively unlimited number of bullshit space-magic countermeasures out of their arses - but theyâre as likely as not to give themselves a lethal five-dimensional wedgie in the process. All those rampant holograms and warp core malfunctions and accidentally-traveling-back-in-time incidents? That doesnât actually happen to anyone else; itâs literally just Federation vessels that go off the rails like that. And they do so on a fairly regular basis.
So to everyone else in the galaxy, all humans are basically Doc Brown.
Aliens who have seen the Back to the Future movies literally donât realise that Doc Brown is meant to be funny. Theyâre just like âyes, that is exactly what all human scientists are like in my experienceâ.
THE ONLY REASON SCOTTY IS CHIEF ENGINEER INSTEAD OF SOMEONE FROM A SPECIES WITH A HIGHER TECHNOLOGICAL APTITUDE IS BECAUSE EVERYONE FROM THOSE SPECIES TOOK ONE LOOK AT THE ENTERPRISEâS ENGINE ROOM AND RAN AWAY SCREAMING
vulcan science academy: why do you need another warp core
humans: weâre going to plug two of them together and see if we go twice as fast
vsa: last time we gave you a warp core you threw it into a sun to see if the sun would go twice as fast
humans: hahaha yeah
humans: it did tho
vsa: IT EXPLODED
humans: it exploded twice as fast
I love this. Especially because of how well it plays with my headcanon that the Federation does so much better against the Borg than anyone else because beating the Borg with military tactics is nigh-impossible, but beating them with wacky superscience shenanigans works as long as theyâre unique wacky superscience shenanigans.
Yeah, I love this.
Reminds me of the thing I wrote a while back about Humans in high fantasy realms - theyâre basically Team Fuck It Hold My Beer I Got This.
Impulsive, passionate to a fault, the social structures they build to try and regulate this hotheadedness ironically creates even greater levels of sheer bull-headedness. Even their âcoolerâ heads take action in months or weeks.
All their great heroes of the past were impossibly rash by galactic standards. Humans Just Go With It, which is their great flaw but also their greatest strength.
klingons: okay we donât get it
vulcan science academy: get what
klingons: you vulcans are a bunch of stuffy prisses but youâre also tougher, stronger, and smarter than humans in every single way
klingons: why do you let them run your federation
vulcan science academy: look
vulcan science academy: this is a species where if you give them two warp cores they donât do experiments on one and save the other for if the first one blows up
vulcan science academy: this is a species where if you give them two warp cores, they will ask for a third one, immediately plug all three into each other, punch a hole into an alternate universe where humans subscribe to an even more destructive ideological system, fight everyone in it because theyâre offended by that, steal their warp cores, plug those together, punch their way back here, then try to turn a nearby sun into a torus because that was what their initial scientific experiment was for and they didnât want to waste a trip.Â
vulcan science academy: they did that last week. we have the write-up right here. itâs getting published in about six hundred scientific journals across two hundred different disciplines because of how many established theories their ridiculous little expedition has just called into question. also, they did turn that sun into a torus, and no one actually knows how.Â
vulcan science academy: this is why we let them do whatever the hell they want.Â
klingons: âŠ. can we be a part of your federation
Come to think of it, I mean. Look at the âfirst human warp driveâ thing in the movie. That was⊠Not how Vulcans would have done it.
you know what the best evidence for this is? Deep Space 9 almost never broke down. minor malfunctions that irritated OâBrien to hell and back, sure, but almost none of the truly weird shit that befell Voyager and all the starships Enterprise. what was the weirdest malfunction DS9 ever had? the senior staff getting trapped as holosuite characters in Our Man Bashir, and that was because a human decided to just dump the transporter buffer into the stationâs core memory and hope everything would work out somehow, which is a bit like swapping your computerâs hard drive out for a memory card from a PlayStation 2 and expecting to be able to play a game of Spyro the Dragon with your keyboard and mouse.
you know what, Iâm not done with this post. letâs talk about the Pegasus. the USS Fucking Pegasus, testbed for the first Starfleet cloaking device. here we have a handful of humans working in secret to develop a cloaking device in violation of a treaty with the Romulans. theyâre playing catchup trying to develop a technology other species have had for a century. and what do they do? do they decide to duplicate a Romulan cloaking device precisely, just see if they can match what other species have? nope. they decide, hey, while weâre at it, while weâre building our very first one of these things, just to find out if this is possible, letâs see if we can make this thing phase us out of normal space so we can fly through planets while weâre invisible.
âbut whyâ said the one Vulcan in the room.
âbecause that would fucking ruleâ said the humans, high-fiving each other and slamming cans of 24th-century Red Bull.
there must be like twenty different counselling groups for non-human engineering students at Starfleet Academy, and every week in every single one of them someone walks in and starts up with a story like âour assignment was to repair a phaser emitter and my one human classmate built a chronometric-flux toaster that toasts bread after youâve eaten it.â
Humans get mildly offended by the way they are presented in non-human media.
Like:Â âGuys, we totally wouldnât do that!â But this always fails to get much traction, because the authors can always say: âYou totally did.â
âThat was ONE TIME.âÂ
Thereâs that movie where humans invented vaccines by just testing them on people. Or the one about those two humans who invented powered flight by crashing a bunch of prototypes. Or the one about electricity.Â
And human historians go, âOh, uh, this is historically accurate, but also kind of boring.â To which the producers respond: âHow is doing THIS CRAZY THING boring????????â
There are entire serieses of horror movies where the premise is âWe stopped paying attention to the human and ey found the technology.â
reblog for new meta. RE that last line: McGuyver.Â
âMacGuyverâ is the equivalent of Vulcan vintage human horror television.
during orientation at a human college, vulcans are presented with a list of swear words.Â
âwhat is the word âfuckâ for,â the innocent young vulcans want to know. âsurely there are more logical intensity modifiers.â
âyeah, youâd think so,â say the weary, jaded vulcan professors. âyouâd really fucking think so.â
there is a phrase in vulcan for âthe particular moment you understand what the word âfuckâ is forâ.Â
This is why the Federation is the only organisation to ever stand a chance against the Borg
The Borg can adapt to the brilliant millitary strategies of the Romulan Star Empire, the Klingons and even the cold logical intellectual prowess of the vulcans
The Borg werenât prepared for a starship captain to lure them into his 50âČs noir detective holo-novel and then machine gun them to death with a weapon made out of hard light
