bonus steve my good friend steve:
the thing about dean is like. 80% of the time when he's lashing out in anger, he doesn't want compliance from those around him. he wants pushback. he wants whoever he is yelling at to yell back and say no, dean, what the hell is wrong with you? but most importantly he wants A Grownup to take his face in their hands and say what's your problem, young man, calm down and do what i say.
and this has to do with a lot of things. it has to do with the fact that dean is very bad at engaging with his own emotions and experiences and so frequently processes them into an undifferentiated Badfeeling which comes out as surliness, grumpiness, and anger. it has to do with the fact that dean is afraid, all the time, inescapably. his life is dominated by fear. and he desperately craves the feeling that someone is taking care of things (this feeling also contributes to his control issues - if he doesn't feel like anyone else if taking care of things, he'll do it himself - but that's a separate though related issue). and so he lashes out hoping to be punished, because if he's punished, that means someone is handling stuff. it has to do with the fact that dean is intensely emotionally driven, he only knows how to react from his gut. he doesn't think about his actions or analyze them, and certainly not before he does them. it has to do with the fact that dean looks in the mirror and sees a four year old boy, because when he was four years old he looked in the mirror and saw an adult man. he was forced to grow up too fast and became trapped in childhood, desperate always to be parented and cared for.
but the problem, of course, is that other people aren't in dean's head. they can't read his mind, they don't share his image of himself, and they can't see through his deceptions. dean isn't a child, he is a large, terrifying adult man. the people around him have no way of telling whether the anger he displays is this kind of emotional smart ass masochism or genuine fury, all they know is that if it's genuine fury they had better not cross him.
so no one ever hold's dean's face and tells him no. all dean gets is more and more dogged obedience he mostly doesn't even want from his increasingly fearful family members.
#dean#dean studies#meta#he literally just wants his mommy!!!!!!!!#the narrative does this too like it tacitly endorses or cowers away from his absurdity#so he keeps pushing the envelope and getting more extreme because he NEVER gets pushback#every day I lament that Bobby was lost in s7 and/or was not replaced by a similar figure#honestly though dean just needs community where he’s not in charge and someone tells him what to do#I think he would become remarkably stable remarkably quickly#like the show seems to argue that his behaviour is an eternal facet of his character because the environment of spn never really changes#but I don’t think that’s the case at all I think if he spent a few months work on a collective project with other people#had a schedule and a set of rules and understood what the consequences were for acting out#I think he’d stop pretty quickly#because he hates how he behaves#(not that he would be fixed instantly or whatever but the incentives to stop being an asshole for him are pretty basic and easily met)#like at a fundamental level dean has very basic emotional and social needs that are unmet and have gone unmet his entire life#so the fix is actually pretty easy! it would be emotionally taxing for him but these aren’t difficult problems to solve#this would also be extremely beneficial for sam and cas as well obviously#anyway communitynatural when

one day jack’s gonna get a boyfriend who’s like a bad boy hunter with a motorcycle he calls his girl and he’s like COMICALLY similar to dean, who just HAAAATESSSS him. cas, however, is charmed bc the hunter boyfriend is very polite and always calls him mr. winchester

just learned americans have different standard paper sizes than everyone else. what do you MEAN you don’t have A4 as the standard. what do you mean your standard paper size isn’t even the same size as an A4. apparently it’s like. ’letter’ and ’legal’ and whatever else. help!!!
this is so scary
That has to be false. That's misinformation hold on
holy fucking shit
So I work in engineering; and always wondered who used these weird “A” sizes I’d see in large printer settings that I’ve never seen any company even have paper in stock for. Now I know.
And now I have to be one of those obnoxious US Americans because WHY THE FUCK WOULD YOU USE THESE WEIRD UNEVEN DIMENSIONS!? Even in metric most of the “A” settings are an annoying ratio! 210x297mm? 594x841mm!? What’s the point of using such small units of measurement if you’re not going to make sensible sizes!?
because the largest standard paper size is A0 which is exactly one square metre of paper with an aspect ratio of the square root of two. this gives us a nice simple measurement of area for the paper as well as allows us to do the halving/doubling magic. A1 is 0.5m², A2 is 0.25m² etc.
The halving/doubling magic that psychaun refers to is the fact that you can get each paper in the series by cutting the previous one in half. I fold some A4 paper in half, I have an A5 booklet. I tape two A4 pieces together along their long side, I have an A3 piece. Each piece of paper is half the area of the previous and half the width of the previous' length with a length the same as the previous' width. The aspect ratio is exactly the same for every size. This makes it very easy to resize things, fold things inside each other, and calculate the size of paper you've never used before based on its name. "I can resize this to fit any other paper size because the aspect ratio is identical," "I can fold a standard size in half to get the next standard size down" and "the area I'm working with can be multiplied up to fit into a metre squared without any messy fractions of leftover paper" are all far more practical considerations for a paper size than "the millimetre length of this paper size isn't a round number".
fyi there are also B sizes in paper, which fit in between the A sizes - less often used but good for book covers and stuff
a Bn size is the mean between An and An-1
and then C sizes for envelopes, such that a C4 envelope fits an unfolded sheet of A4 etc

"What the fuck did you mean, flattered?"
Jamie glances at Roy on the bike behind him. "What?"
"Look where you're fucking going," Roy snaps, and Jamie looks back ahead just in time to dodge someone wheeling a pram. "I said, what the fuck did you mean when you said you were flattered that everyone thought you were gay? Why is that flattering?"
Jamie is confused for a moment that he's bringing this up now, then remembers Roy wasn't in the room for that. Someone must have mentioned it to him. "Always wanted to be gay," he explains.
"Why?"
Jamie shrugs. "Better clothes. Better clubs. Way better hookup apps. Plus, men are dead sexy."
There is a very long silence. Jamie glances back again just to make sure Roy hasn't fallen off the bike.
"You think men are sexy," Roy says flatly. "As in, you would like to have sex with them?"
"Yeah," Jamie sighs. "I think about it all the time."
Another long silence, then: "Have you ever heard the word bisexual?"
"Oh yeah, that's people who get to bang both! The fucking dream, innit. Wish that were me."
The rope around Jamie's waist starts to jerk rhythmically. He looks back to find Roy banging his head against the handlebars of the bike. "I don't—even—get fucking—paid for this," he's mumbling, and that's all Jamie catches before he crashes full-on into a streetlamp.
ok buckle up it is once again complaining about ted telling jamie to forgive his dad hours. because my problems with the actual content of that conversation aside (and if you follow me, you know i have a lot of them) it just… doesn’t make that much narrative sense for ted to be the one to have that conversation with him? i could see it working in an alternate version of season 3 that actually explored why jamie kept showing up in ted's panic attacks and where him talking to jamie about his dad in 3x11 was the culmination of a season-long arc for the two of them (as a narrative choice; i still wouldn't be on board for the forgiveness thing), but in the version of the season that we did get, they just haven’t had enough direction interaction in general or about james specifically for it to feel like the payoff to anything.
i’ve made my case before for rebecca being the one to talk to jamie since she’d found some closure about the role her own abuser played in her life — without forgiving him, i might add — but even among the rest of the coaching staff, roy knows the most about jamie’s relationship with his dad and has a pretty solid track record with supporting him when he’s having a james-related bad time, and beard, despite *also* hardly ever interacting with jamie directly, is acutely aware of how dangerous james can be and implied to have a difficult (and possibly abusive) relationship with his own family that would give him a useful perspective that ted doesn't really have
rereading my own writing is just a constant fluctuation between "damn, girl, you wrote this? (affectionate)" and "damn, girl, you wrote this? (derogatory)"
I am also “damn, girl, you wrote this? (forgetful)”
I don’t think I’ve ever felt anything more in my life.
things in fic I'm used to people kind of faking their way through writing about:
the city of los angeles
the city of new york
sex
how drinking alcohol works
how getting high works
how a child of any age speaks
how nuclear physics work
how [my job] works
how debilitating being shot in the shoulder is
how hypothermia works
things I have never before seen someone fake their way through writing about, until today:
what french toast is
read through the notes on this one trust me
Here's some of the notes, starting with the things multiple people brought up:
SHRIMP COCKTAIL:
banahbanah: #flashback to that one fic where Peter Parker frets about drinking shrimp cocktail because of the alcohol
generaldeliciousness: adding: what a prawn/shrimp cocktail is
#why is your character turning it down because they're under 21 #do you think prawn cocktail is a cocktail #this lives in my brain rent-free constantly #the rest of the fic was so normal #and good enough that i'll still re-read it #but bro
And then many, MANY, people wondering if this was actually authour mistake, since Peter really would do this!
POMEGRANATES:
zhajhassa: #haha where's that post that was like someone describing someone eating a pomegranate but they ate it like an apple
thornhands: #once someone wrote persephone biting into a whole Pomegranate #had to stop and stare at a wall for a minute
sungsingsanguine: I once saw someone very confidently write about a character eating slices of pomegranate.
FRUIT TREES:
zagreuses-toast: #given a very endearing glimpse into a writers blindspots by seeing them describe someone sitting under a ''pineapple tree''
salatrash: I remember something about picking watermelons... OF A FUCKING TREE
baander: #cranberry trees
DOUGH/BATTER:
maycelium: #I'm a chef so I'm really used to people not accurately describing how to cook food #But I was surprisingly flabbergasted when someone was writing making a cake and was kneading it. Which uh #Not necessary for cake. It was interesting for sure but just bizarre
livebloggingmydescentintomadness: #the one that drove me nuts was when a character set aside a batch of PASTA DOUGH 'to rise' #pasta doesn't have yeast!! #it does need to REST but it will never RISE #you do not want an airy crumb on your noodles
lovesodeepandwideandwell: #THE ONE WHERE THEY MADE COOKIES BY LADLING BATTER INTO A TRAY

my controversial opinion is I don’t think Zuko was confused by “my first girlfriend turned into the moon”
he was there during siege of the North. he infiltrated the spirit oasis. he has an uncle who studies spirits and the spirit world. he watched the sky go dark then the moon suddenly reappear like everyone else in the entire world did. and most importantly he watched zhao get eaten by a giant godzilla fish spirit.
his entire life since he saw that beam of blue-white light in the south pole has been ‘this day has already been so goddamn weird’
The only really new information was that that was Sokka’s girlfriend
Important opinion in the tags that I need to have be part of the post:
Also, Iroh was there? He literally watched Sokka make out with the moon spirit. And you want to tell me that a romantic sap like him would not have immediately told Zuko about this romantic tragedy? Please, Zuko has known about this for ages, he just knows that this is not an acceptable situation in which to say “yeah, I know.”
Sokka: “My girlfriend turned into the moon.”
Zuko: “I know.” “Yes.” “She sure did.” “Uh huh.” “Tell me something new.” “Are we still talking about that?” “That’s rough, buddy.”
[image: tags by samwisethebold: #it’s not that he doesn’t get what sokka means #it’s that how on earth do you respond to that]
When you put it like that, this is actually a legendary display of tact on Zuko’s part
Hamlet adaptation where Hamlet is a vlogger and all his soliloquies are breakdowns he uploads to YouTube
… I am unironically here for this
this is the funniest thing I’ve ever seen in my life
This is - legitimately - my favourite delivery of Shakespeare I have EVER seen (and I have seen some good-ass productions yo, in the Globe Theatre itself even). Like seriously, even though the words are unchanged, he’s stripped away ALL of the archaic pretense and assumed grandeur of ~presenting the bard~ that makes even the most wildly talented of actors and innovative of productions inherently inaccessible to a modern audience. Like, they’re still great, they can still communicate the message and (some) of the nuance, but they’re still always a step removed from being identifiable to any viewer’s lived experience. They’re still always reciting 15th century poetry. But this guy? This guy is like, screw iambic pentameter, to hell with being precious about the material, HOW WOULD AN ACTUAL PERSON SAY THIS SHIT?
Like this. And it’s beautiful. It’s beautiful to hear a soliloquy I loved so much already, and have it come to life in a way it never, ever, did before. I feel like I grasp his motivations, his twists and turns, no longer on an academic level but on a visceral, instinctive one. Because he’s presenting his mental and emotional journey in a way that speaks honestly, like a real person.
So yeah, this shit post? I love it. Deeply and sincerely.
A post about this went round recently, and I’m delighted to announce she’s since come out as trans and goes by Jasmine 🏳️⚧️
Actor and Writer
There’s a whole series of the Hamlet videos on her YouTube, as well as a bunch of other films she’s made
if u think poc talking about fandom racism is ruining ur fun and putting a strain on the community, I wish u a very shut the fuck up
If your fun is ruined by people pointing out the racism in the community you should consider why your fun depends on them being silent about the racism in the community.
"not everything has to mean something" whatever i wanna analyze ash tray placement!
Ilya putting out his cigarette in the really nice vodka even though the ash tray is right there because he can't ask Shane to hand it to him because even that is being too emotionally vulnerable. Ilya also not savoring/appreciating the thing he described as a prize because it's not really the thing he needs right now oooooo it's a metaphor
Shane has the ash but isn't offering it up because either that feels too much like crossing an emotional line and/or because he's too focused on the fear he has about Ilya and Russia that was founded back during the Olympics and has just been festering for six months and he needs the reassurance more than he wants to actually recognize Ilya's needs in the moment and that he's actually exasperating Ilya's issue seeking his own comfort ooooo character introspection lmao.
Also Shane drinking the vodka trying to appeal to Ilya/take in (being) Ilya's prize while Ilya is actively ruining his vodka. They literally can't be on the same page in this moment, the disconnect is still too big for them to connect even over drinking the same drink
