The relationship between Barty and Regulus wasnāt even something that Barty himself could explain.
Regulus was able to calm him when no one else could manage it. The two werenāt in love, Barty caught Regulus sticking by that story time and time again, but how else was he supposed to explain this?
āThat one there is me,ā the shorter boy said with a gentle smile, lifting his arm and pointing up to the sky.
Regulus was a bright star. Not as bright as Sirius, the boy would insist dryly, but Barty didnāt care for his brother. In his eyes, Regulus was and would always be the brightest.
Barty had already memorized the night sky. Any time someone would ask him why he knew so much, he would insist it was for Astronomy, that he was just putting his wit to good use. He wouldnāt ever admit how heād read tens upon hundreds of books, how heād sneak out every night to stare up at the small twinkling lights, how heād learned everything he could about their stories and their constellations just for a boy. That, Barty imagined, would cause everyone to value his opinion less.
So naturally, Barty already knew where Regulus was. What constellation he was a part of (Leo, Regulus being the very heart of it), what the name meant (Little Prince, which he found ironic), even little facts that had no real importance (how Regulus is actually four stars so close together that they shine brightly as one).
But seeing Regulus (the boy ā his boy) so interested in something, Barty couldnāt complain. Instead his head rested on Regulusā lap as he listened peacefully, the Slytherinās smile infectious as he rambled about things that Barty already knew.
He would listen to Regulus repeat the same one story for eternity if it meant staying like this.
Especially because he knew they wouldnāt. Stay like this, he means. He sees his boy light up at the mention of James Potter; even if it is always the smallest flicker of interest in his soft blue eyes. He hates Potter for it, for taking something so precious away from him. Potter didnāt even know how infatuated Regulus was with him. He took their (painfully slow-moving) friendship for granted. Regulus didnāt deserve a boy like him, not when Barty was right here to love.
But that very knowledge in itself, the simple fact that he and his Prince wouldnāt last forever ā maybe not even for the rest of this year ā made moments like these all the more special.
Barty will take any chance heās given to be around the brightest star in his sky. Heāll hold on until thereās nothing left. Maybe itās not healthy, but heās okay with that.

His big brother only sighed, letting out a small giggle and shaking his head again. āItās okay, Reggie, youāre only four. Youāll get it.ā
Reggie smiled, wide and happy. His brother had laughed, his big brother laughed. His big brother was happy, so of course he was happy too.
āSiwius,ā he said again, trying to get the bigger, much more mature boy to laugh again. His brother was six. He was a lot bigger than Reggie.
āThatās right. Whatās my name?ā
āSiwius!ā He sang, bursting into giggles.

His bodyguard frowned, looking over from whatever he was typing. āWhoās Pads?ā
āMy husband.ā
āYour what?ā
āPads, Padfoot, my best friend. My husband.ā
Apparently that was all Mr. Black had needed to know, because his head ducked back down to his laptop and he continued typing away. James sighed dramatically.

Potter paused, frowning a little and looking at Regulus with an almost affronted expression. āThis was my childhood home,ā he said in offense.
Regulus froze, worried he had upset the man. Yes, it wasnāt his job to focus on feelings, but everyone knew that James Potter had a good childhood. Maybe the house was special to him, and here Regulus was just instantly picking out every issue? Wow.
āI didnāt mean it rudely. I, um, I just meant. You know, it-ā
Potterās frown broke into a grin, and Lily shook her head with a sigh as the actor began to laugh.
āRelax,ā he said casually, seating himself comfortably on the barstool in his kitchen. āIām just messing with you. Acting, you know?ā

Sirius never liked the colour grey.
To him, grey was mourning. Grey was dull, it was boredom. It was sorrow; but not the type of sorrow that has your heart wrenching in emotion, no, because then that would be at least somewhat intriguing. The type of sorrow where you sit there silently, simply blinking and wishing it would be over. Your thoughts arenāt too loud, theyāre not too overwhelming. Theyāre justā¦ there.
Overall, grey was the opposite of red. Grey wasnāt exciting. Grey wasā¦ grey. Plus, heād dealt with enough grey in his lifetime. Grey suits, and colourless balls with colourless people who didnāt really like being there, just enjoyed the drinks. Empty promises, and plain bedsheets, and everything that wasnāt fun. So no, Sirius didnāt like grey. How could he?
Until September 1st, 1971. When he boarded the Hogwarts Express, ready for his first ever year at Hogwarts. He found a compartment, sat himself down, and laid his eyes on the greyest eyes heād ever seen; but this grey was anything but dull.
His eyes were like clouds after a storm; dark, with sun shining through the grey. They even had a hint of amber to them, like little rays peeking on an overcast morning. They were hard, and firm, proof that the boy had been through a lot. Sirius found himself unable to look away from the grey eyes. Grey, of all things!
But somehow, Sirius found himself unable to hate grey for much longer.

Nervous was an understatement; Regulus was, in fact, terrified. He had a show today ā a show, might he add, that was put together in a total of four days. Heād been given a dance number. It only lasted a minute, truth be told, but that didnāt help the fact heād be onstage on his own.

Regulus was nervous.
Of course, heād always known he was a good dancer. His body flowed in the right directions, and when he danced, itās like he threw every single one of his troubles into the piece. That being said, it was perfectly normal for Regulus to get stage fright. And on top of that his parents were coming to watch; and his parents had always had high hopes for him. What if he fell halfway through? What if he froze up, and everyone laughed while he stood there panicked? Regulus ran a hand through his hair and began to pace.
Heāll run away. Right before his number, heāll run away and never show his face again, thatās it. Yes, heāll get a fake ID and move to a different country, maybe as far away as Canada. He can start a new life, and never have to face the embarrassment of dancing ever. Yes, thatās what heāll do. It wouldnāt be too hard, consideringā
āHey.ā Regulus froze, instantly recognising the voice. It took the boy everything in him not to visibly swoon.
Looking up slowly, he came face to face with a smile; oh, that smile. It drove Regulus insane. Perfect white teeth and warm, full lips. Placed a bit further up - where Regulus didnāt dare to look in fear of having to acknowledge who exactly was in front of him ā were eyes that seemed to make everything look dull in comparison. Bright, excitable brown with flecks of sunlight gold. Sunlight that reflected the taller boyās personality to a tee.
āHello, James,ā Regulus said as firmly as he could. He couldnāt show his fear, his weakness; if he did, James would find him weird, and it would all be over. Heād never have a chance with him ever again. āWhat do you want?ā
That wasnāt what heād meant to say. He winced, finally looking into Jamesās eyes ā those beautiful eyes ā to find any hint of hatred or discomfort. There was none. There was, strangely, concern.
āAre you alright? You seem a bit stressed out.ā The boy asked, his voice ringing in Regulusās ears like the bass line of an acoustic guitar. Deep and strong but holding content and love in every strum it plays.
It took a moment before Regulus realized that James was expecting an answer. Heād been so caught up in admiring his voice that heād forgotten the questionā¦ How embarrassing.
āSorry, what?ā He spluttered, cheeks flushing a strong tint of red. Heāll never look James in the eye again. This is awful. How could he ever live with himself? Maybe he should run away to Canada sooner.
To his complete surprise, the brown-eyed boy laughed. He laughed, and Regulus swore he could hear wedding bells cry in the background. āI asked if you were alright,ā James repeated, talking considerably slower and leaning down to look the shorter boy in the eye. Regulus was sure his face looked as red as a stop sign now; even if he found himself hoping the other boy would do the exact opposite.
āYes, Iām perfectly stop.ā Nope. āI mean, Iām all fine. Right! All right. Iām awesome.ā A pause. āā¦ Coolio.ā
Coolio? He might as well book the plane tickets now.
James looked at him, raising a simple eyebrow. God, he looked so cocky. So full of himself. So beautiful. Regulus couldnāt stop himself from cracking, and so he began to spew out everything that was wrong.
āNo, actually. Iāve only had 4 days to learn my part for the dance, and I know Iāve got it down but I keep thinking what if I donāt remember when Iām on stage? What if I go on, and I seize up and everyone laughs? Oh man, my parents will be there. Theyāll be so disappointed. I really donāt want to mess this up.ā
Jamesās smirk faltered, and the genuine concern was back. He frowned and leaned down, looking at Regulus with pure care and respect in his expression; but Regulus couldnāt do it. His eyes watered and he tilted his head down in shame and humiliation. His breath was fast paced, and it took everything in him not to cry in front of such a beautiful boy. āSorry,ā he stammered. His voice cracked. He winced.
Regulus expected laughter. He expected ridicule, or maybe a scoff of disgust. Surely James wouldnāt want to associate with a crybaby. Thatās what he was, wasnāt he? He grimaced, waiting to hear the sound of distaste that would most definitely come from the boy with the stunning curls.
What he didnāt expect was the feel of fingers. Rough and brittle, but smooth enough to calm anyone. They gently ran themselves onto Regulusās chin, lifting his head back up and gripping him in a firm yet careful hold. Regulus came back into eye contact with James, who was staring deeply into his eyes as if he was the most important person in the world. Brown met hazel green, and Regulusās brain fuzzed.
He somewhat registered that James was speaking; he did catch little words, cautious phrases. Things like āyouāll do amazing, I know it,ā and āyouāre the smartest person in this class,ā and āIāll still love you even if you mess up.ā (That last one was, in fact, just a figment of Regulusās imagination.) There was silence for a while, and he realized that James had stopped speaking.
Regulus nodded. He could feel his face flushing; blotches of pink spreading over his pale cheeks, bright enough that they could infect the warm brown hand that connected with his chin. Well, it was connected, at least. Satisfied with the response, James pulled his hand away and smiled reassuringly at the smaller boy. His arms spread out, and it took Regulus another moment to realize he was being invited in for a hug.
āI believe in you,ā Jamesās warm voice murmured into his ear as his strong arms wrapped around Regulusās thin frame. He nodded in response, closing his eyes and relishing the hug for as long as he could.

The performance went amazingly well to Regulusās surprise. His body remembered the moves, and his flexible limbs proved themselves to be extremely useful. He glided and leapt around the stage, regal and prim. Impactful. Stunning.
At the very end, after every performance had played and the curtains were closed for the final time that night, Regulus sought out James. He wanted to tell him everything; how well heād done, how proud of himself he was. What a funny comedy show James had put on. Theyād both done great work tonight. Maybe, if he was lucky, James would tell him that heās proud too.
He looked around, darting between people, his eyes nimbly flitting from group to group, trying to find the one boy he wanted to see. And then he found him. He lit up, calling out the older boyās name and trying to push through the crowd; but soon realized he was already talking to another girl. Regulus recognised the girl, too. Her name was Lily; and she, too, was beautiful. Smooth skin, silky hair, and eyes as bright as day. Regulus also recognised how her cheeks flushed, similar to his own whenever James spoke to him.
James was leaning against the wall casually, looking at Lily as she gushed and spoke. He laughed at one point, before playfully pushing Lily back. The girl gasped in mock offense, before laughing even harder and initiating a small play fight between the two.
Oh.
Regulus deflated, pausing and watching as the two bantered and giggled, rough-housing with each other and enjoying their time. If he squinted, the pale boy could see a glow to Jamesās eyes; one that he didnāt have when looking at him, or comforting him. Regulusās smile dropped slowly, and he looked away from the two.
Maybe itās best not to bother them. James was happier with Lily, and you could visibly see that they fancied each other. Regulus decided to leave James for the girl to have; she deserved him much more than he ever would. Chances are that the beautiful boy with chocolate brown eyes doesnāt even like boys in that way.
Itās better to admire from afar anyway, in Regulusās case. That way he can skilfully avoid getting hurt again.

Year 1.
Breathe, Sirius. Just breathe.
Thereās three boys in his compartment. One has beautiful grey eyes, accompanied by a gaunt face and buzzed hair. Another has a smile that could light up the country, and glasses so big that he has to push them back up his nose every thirty seconds. The third seems to cling on to Smile-Boy like a leech, hosting flat tufts of blond that fall over his eyes onto his rosy cheeks.
Breathe, Sirius.
He thinks Reggie would get along with the quieter one, the one whoās staring very pointedly at his worn down sneakers to avoid conversation. Sirius starts one anyway, beginning to talk about school houses and family background and blood status. After all, heās never really known anything to talk about.
He finds that Remus, the quiet boy, is the only halfblood of the group; the rest are pure. Good, Sirius says with a laugh, at least I wonāt have muggleborns for friends.
And what would be so bad about that? James - the one with the smile - confronts, his smile replaced with a confused frown. Muggleborns have magic too, just like us. Why should they be treated differently?
Sirius doesnāt know the answer to that. In all honesty, he was just repeating what his mother had said to him. Heās been raised to dislike them; though, he supposes, he never found out why. Maybe heāll ask Reggie in the first letter he sends home.
Year 2.
Sirius doesnāt know why Reggie doesnāt like his friends. Why heās looking at them with so much hate. As if he despises them.
I donāt want blood traitors and half bloods as friends, the little boy all but sneers. And then he leaves the compartment, off on his own.
Breathe, Sirius.
He doesnāt know why Reggieās acting so high and mighty, so self righteous. Itās almost like he was their mother, right then. Sirius thinks this is unfair to his friends, especially to Remus.
Wait. What?
Not only to Remus, he reminds himself; although a little confused. Why was he even thinking about only Remus in the first place? Remus isnāt any more special than James, or rosy-cheeked Peter.
He hopes Reggie will be in Gryffindor, like himself. It isnāt fair that he has to be the family disappointment alone, after all. Plus; if Reggie is in Gryffindor too, maybe theyād become closer again.
Sirius misses his little brother. It isnāt fair how distant theyāve gotten, not over a silly colour.
James sees his frown, and cares enough to ask if heās okay. Of course he is. Heās not meant to be anything else.
Year 3.
Reg doesnāt talk to him anymore. I donāt understand, Sirius thinks as his own brother dismisses him for his stupid bigot friends.
No matter. Heās got James, with his passion for Quidditch and his newfound goal of getting that muggleborn, Lily Evans, to fall in love with him. Heās got Peter, whom heās never once beaten in chess. (Pete is most definitely cheating, Sirius has to reassure himself. No one is that good at chess.)
Heās got Remus, his uber-cool werewolf friend. Sirius thinks that being able to be a wolf every month is awesome; Remus isnāt as sure of it. Remus, with his stunningly grey eyes that ā when you look at them closely enough ā have a hint of gold that reminds Sirius of sun kissed clouds after a storm. Remus, who introduces him to muggle chocolate (Mars Bars, unfortunately, are not made on the planet) and muggle vinyls and these things called fags that the taller boy says theyāre not supposed to have but they smoke them together anyway and giggle when hiding them from a professor. Remus, who has trouble reading; only Sirius knows about it. Itās their own secret, just for the two of them. Remus, with his messy brown curls and his beautifully scarred face and his gangly, lanky body andā

Remus isnāt quite his closest friend; no, that title was reserved for James. What he and Remus had? It was special. Different.
Sirius feels himself caring a great deal for his half-blooded friend.
Year 4.
Sirius has discovered girls, he realises, as he finds himself watching a specifically pretty 5th year board the train with her other equally pretty friends. She had nice blonde hair and pretty grey eyes that reminded him of Remus.
Not that girls reminded him of Remus, of course. He wasnātā¦
Regulus didnāt speak to him again, last summer. Not that Sirius cares, he had found a way to send and receive muggle post without anyone else knowing so he could at least keep in contact with James, Remus and Peter. He found himself wondering, though; did Regulus miss talking to him in the way that Sirius missed having his brother around? Maybe not. Regulus was no different than the rest of the family.
Maybe this year, Sirius thinks as James and Remus engage in light conversation, Iāll get a girlfriend. Maybe Iāll find someone pretty, someone I can kiss. A girl with beautiful brown curls, and amber-grey eyes, and a lanky body, like Remus.
No, not like Remus. Sirius shouldnāt be thinking like that, associating romance with a male.
But as he finds himself making eye contact with the tall boy, he canāt help but smile back.
Year 5.
He doesnāt think he can stand it, going back to that house anymore. Thereās no care, no love; not even Regulus wants to be around him anymore. Of course he doesnāt, Sirius scoffs to himself. Heās the perfect golden child, with his perfect pure blood friends and his perfect school record.
Surely he wonāt have to go back this year. Maybe he can run away, start a life in the muggle world with Remus, Peter and James and leave all of this magic, all the blood status behind. James wouldnāt do it; he wants to fight in the war. Heās said it himself. Peter follows whatever James says, of course, so heās going to fight too.
Remus wants to fight too, he says during the train ride. He wants everyone to have equal rights to everyone else, because he knows what itās like to be discriminated against. Of course he does. He spends a whole night every month alone, with his own pain and terror.
Not for long, though. Sirius convinced James and Peter to do something with him, something for his friend. He couldnāt have Remus suffering on his own, not when he had friends like Sirius there for him.
Sirius likes to think heās a good friend. He likes to think about how much he looks out for the boys; and he likes to think he can be a good boyfriend too, at least to all the girls heās been with. Sirius doesnāt like to think about how he sometimes imagines being more than friends with Remus. He doesnāt like to think thereās even a possibility that he could be queer; that would be the last straw for his mother.
Not that he cares what his family thinks, of course. Theyāre hardly his family.
Year 6.
Sirius is sitting alone this year. Well, Peterās with him; but they both know that heād rather be with James and Remus. Sirius wouldnāt want to be around himself either, really; not after what had happened.
Breathe, Sirius. Breathe.
Breathe.
Itās not fair, he thinks to himself. One mistake and suddenly heās lost everyone. Although, he supposes it wasnāt quite just a mistake. Now that slimy got, Snape, knew the one secret that Sirius had been trusted to keep. Sirius wonders whether Remus will ever tell him another secret again.
Probably not, not after this.
He didnāt have his brother, either. Over the summer, heād run away; and while the Potters took him in without a second thought, James still wasnāt speaking to him. And now neither was Regulus.
He hadnāt meant to abandon the boy. He meant to come back, of course he did; but for the first time, Sirius was scared to go back. Now he wasnāt even a true Gryffindor either, and Regulus was stuck in that house with that kind of people. He couldnāt even save his own brother.
Breathe, Sirius.
Regulus wouldnāt have come with him anyway. Sirius has known this for a long time, now; Regulus wasnāt really his brother, not in the ways that mattered. He was Walburga Blackās son.
Year 7.
Everythingās okay again, finally; perhaps even better. Not only does Sirius have his friends back, but he has Remus. He has Remus how heās always wanted him.
Sirius still isnāt queer, of course; but he gets to hold Remus, he gets to kiss him. To love him. Sirius doesnāt need to be queer to love someone as loveable as Remus Lupin, the half-blood werewolf.
He didnāt see Regulus earlier, when waiting to board the train. Not that he cares anymore, of course, Regulus is basically a stranger to him now. He canāt help feeling worried, even still.
James is sure that heāll get the girl, this year. He boasts about it all the way, even makes a few cheeky comments directed to Sirius on how Evans will want him more because he hasnāt gone around to other girls. Sirius doesnāt mind, though.
Sirius doesnāt need to get the girl. He doesnāt need to worry about not being loved as much, not when heās got his own little secret right next to him. Said secret makes a mere second of eye contact, before shoving a chocolate in his mouth to stifle his laughter.
Everythingās okay, now. And it will be for a long time, even during the war. Sirius wonāt let any of his friends get hurt.

Bloodshot - Prologue
This canāt be safe. Even so, a focused air hung in the laboratory, silent, the scientists worked with only the sound of a chemical reaction once in a while. There mustāve been about fifteen people, standing on this epoxy resin floor, with those egg white smocks, blue latex gloves and each the same, focused expression. One of the newer employees seems to have his head in the clouds, and as the worker turns around, distracted ā *crack*, the vial goes as it hits the floor and rolls behind him. Immediately, the air shifts. Tense and anxious, accusatory and annoyed are the eyes on the man as he crouches down to retrieve it; āLeonard Brunā is written on his ID card. A slight scar in the glass goes undetected by the embarrassed scientist, even as it leaves a small clump of strangely thick liquid on his glove. His coworkers breathe a sigh of relief and exasperation, going back to their own. Leonard takes his stained hand to his face, scratching his cheek in awkwardness. Barely a few seconds later, everyone needs to turn back around, for the man has begun screaming in agony. Where he has scratched seems to be being eaten away - melting. he clutches his head powerlessly, the other colorless yet abnormally chunky liquid taking a blood red color. It eats away strangely fast through mid-cheek down to the lower jaw and what he seems to gurgle out isnāt blood nor saliva, but the same fluid attacking his body. They almost seem to come out string-like, spreading and burning down on his limbs. Frozen in horror, the laboratory is a mix of frantic yelling and whimpering. Five horrid minutes later, the man looks up through his tears, eyes wide and bloodshot. He stands up, gurgling and panting, before lunging at the nearest scientist, acidic mess spilling everywhere, risking bringing down everyone alongside him. Behind the table the nearest to the door, a ruby-eyed man uses his quick-wit. Rapidly grabbing his plum colored bag, he bolts out, followed by other lucky folks, terrified of what they have created.
