Intro Post because why not
Hey, I'm @elitegeek , and I use she/her pronouns

Some of the fandoms I'm in under the cut:
Wake Up Dead Man does an excellent job at every turn of displaying the misogyny of the Catholic Church and I really can’t stop thinking about it.
The first thing we learn about Martha is that she runs EVERYTHING, and she truly does, down to feeding Wicks. She keeps the church running smoothly, she keeps Wicks alive and presentable for his entitled, hateful sermons. The church only functions with Martha there to make it so, and yet, only Father Jud seems to recognise how much she does for the church itself.
Simone funds everything. Out of the very few regulars that Wicks has whittled his congregation down to, Simone is the only person we hear of making such substantial donations, giving the church all of her savings for the promise of healing that Wicks cons her into believing that he can provide. Simone is seemingly the only person willing to give enough money to keep the church alive.
Vera raised Wicks’ heir for him, did exactly what her father wanted, and is given absolutely nothing in return by any of the three men she has devoted her life to. Cy is thrown at her, given no choice but to raise him, a boy who she first believes to be her brother who she later finds out has no connection to her at all. Motherhood is forced upon Vera no matter what affect it may have on her life. Vera’s life has always been used by the men around her as a tool for their own gain, yet even she knows she has not done enough to earn her father’s approval, only pleased with her, never proud.
And Grace, that poor girl, has been characterised as a greed driven beast who desecrated a church in a fit of shrieking demonic rage, shown against a blood red night sky. Grace, who was, in reality, a young single mother shunned by her small town, by her father who was no doubt turning her own son against her, who had her only chance to escape her prison of judgement stolen from her.
Her existence is what actually motivates Wicks’ sermons as a whole, the memory of “the harlot whore” ultimately the root of what drives him, raised on hatred and judgement that he inflicts upon anyone he can rather than the kindness and understanding he ought to practice and preach, the utter opposite of Father Jud. Arms up instead of out. Even somebody like Doctor Nat is only driven by his growing hatred of women after his wife left him.
Misogyny is so woven throughout the church that I think it makes it all the more powerful for Jud to rename the church after Grace. Perpetual Grace, not Fortitude against the twisted retelling of her existence, but preserving the one thing she was never afforded. It is only the women who find happiness in the end. Vera is free of Wicks, her father, Cy, all of the men who took her life and used it for themselves. Simone plays her cello again. Martha finds forgiveness, she finally lets go of the hatred that drove her entire life. Grace is given redemption and honour. Those poor girls
1. I love that Vera is the first person to truly see Grace as she was instead of the story she was always told by Wicks. And she does it completely without any influence from our main characters, just entirely on her own. Thats her own arc, her own doing 100%. They don't even make a suggestion. Love that.
2. Unrelated to the actual movie but when I was looking into the origins of characters names I discovered that Martha was a biblical character. Possibly somewhat well know to people who know religious stuff but she is certainly not as well know as, say, Mary Magdalene. Who is her sister.
Did anyone else know Mary Magdalene had a sister? I didnt. No one EVER talks about her. The only time she's been referenced in pop culture I've seen is the Marthas in handmaids tale.
According to Wikipedia, Jesus shows up to the Magdalene sisters house and Martha is the one waiting on everyone, getting everything ready, doing all the chores, making food, doing EVERYTHING.
This was, apparently, not the best thing to do because it seems like she was getting a bit snippy about doing all this herself while her sister Mary was busy being pious and devoted to Jesus, which was the correct thing to do. Jesus was like "seriously, you dont have to do that, come sit and talk."
Martha, who I assume was the older sister, was like "Oh, because the goats are just gonna feed THEMSELVES? Sure."
Talk about doing everything and being unappreciated.
Whats interesting is the way both sisters are portrayed in this story versus the way they are largely remembered and seen now.
Martha, who did the chores and managed the house and served everyone is remembered barely at all. A footnote.
Mary, who was pious and devoted and loyal and did as she was asked is remembered as the harlot whore.
Highly relevant, I think.
@bovivinator I have briefly done more research, via Wikipedia, which I am sure is totally correct about everything.
Whether or not most of the Mary's are different Mary's, it does appear to have lent itself to confusion over the years, because. That's a lot of Mary's. Like, Martha and her sister Mary here is NOT the same Mary as Mary of Bethany, so says Wikipedia, because they don't mention having a brother named Lazarus.
However, Mary of Bethany does also have a sister named Martha (what are the odds) as well as a brother named Lazarus. Given the connection to Lazarus in the movie, this was probably taken into consideration. The Lazarus door to the tomb and him being one of the other dudes who famously comes back from the dead.
Wikipedia also says that Mary of Bethany anoints Jesus' feet with oils. This is one of the handful of things I know about, Bible-wise (It was in 'Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal' which I assume was accurate in every way) but I was under the impression this was Mary Magdalene. According to Wikipedia, there was debate about that for a long time as well.
So at one time or another, people were unsure if Mary Magdalene WAS Mary of Bethany as well as this "unnamed sinful woman," which would also make her the sister of Lazarus and Martha.
Wikipedia goes on to say that in the Gospel of Luke, there is a second feet anointing (I shant make a joke) from a sinful woman (I assume this is THE unnamed sinful woman). She weeps, her tears fall upon Jesus' feet and seeing this, she wipes them with her hair.
Now, THIS is the basis for the scene that is depicted in the book I read. But it's clearly a conflation of the two feet anointings. It's performed by Mary Magdalene, but in Bethany before the death of Jesus which they all know is coming. She weeps and then uses her hair to wipe the tears and wash his feet.
The book is largely comedic, but this scene is very sad and emotional for both Mary and our narrator Biff, because they both love their friend and they know he's going to die. This entire part of the novel, actually, takes a quite serious turn. Hard to turn "your childhood friend is horribly martyred on a cross" into a joke. Good book though.
The fact that the two scenes are conflated in this book seems to suggest that this isn't unusual, right? That's probably why people started putting Mary Magdalene together with the sinful woman, when in theory it wasn't Mary Magdalene involved in either feet anointing at all, possibly.
I don't have a conclusion or anything I just think this is all really interesting. I feel like there's a movie or something here. "Hail Mary and Mary and Mary and Martha, too"
Incredibly fitting that a post about the misogyny of the Catholic church in media has come to be about the misogyny of the Catholic church as well, since it was a Pope who made so many of the Marys interchangeable.
Mary of Bethany isn't Mary Magdalene, because Mary Magdalene is from Magdala in Galilee, ergo her name. Mary Magdalene was named as a woman who had seven demons cast out of her and is one of a group of women who "provided for [Jesus and his boys] out of their resources." (Luke 8:3)
Centuries down the line, it was one of the Popes who decided to remove Mary's agency as one of the sponsors of Jesus and his road trip and merge her with the character of The Sinful Woman (Luke 7:10).
Fun fact: it doesn't specify how said woman is sinful in any of the versions of the Bible I'm familiar with. Sinful doesn't necessarily mean prostitute, but like Wicks' father and Wicks himself, calling a woman a harlot and whore was the easiest way to discredit her.
The parallels of the Biblical women with the women in Wake Up Dead Men is fascinating as well.
Mary, mother of Jesus - a woman who had a child thrust upon her by a powerful deity, the news of which is delivered to her by one of his messengers = Vera, who was given the son of Wicks to raise as her own, by her own father, who was Wicks's legal advisor/messenger
Mary Magdalene - a woman in need of healing (who got it) and then supports Jesus on his pastoral ventures = Simone, who seeks healing and salvation, and supports Wicks financially.
Martha - one of the pair of sisters, Martha was rushing around doing all of the work with no help or appreciation and complained about it to Jesus who made it quietly clear that listening to what he was saying was important = Martha, who did everything for Wicks, all of the time and wound herself in knots trying to abide by all the rules and knowledge she had and only finding peace after listening to what Father Jud actually said.
The Sinful woman - no sin is specifically named for her and she was named a prostitute by later revisions and interpretations of the Bible by the church, but she is shown grace and forgiveness in the actual text by Jesus - Grace (who was, very possibly, abused by her own father)
To say nothing of the McGuffin being Eve's Apple - something forbidden and an object that was a trigger for the fall of Wicks.
There's something poetic about the Biblical women being mirrored by the women of Wake Up Dead Man, especially seeing how the Biblical womens' stories were changed to fit the Church's ideals, something reflected in the way the WUDM women are pushed and pressed and twisted into roles by the Wicks men and the men of their community.

Rewatching the series and I had forgotten how dead set Nicholas is on giving Reynie a biscuit when he comes to ask about Constance in episode 2 ? Poor boy he's so uncomfortable and awkward and Mr. Benedict is just like. I must Feed the child.
This is canon to me because the second time Reynie refuses it, Nicholas just tries to feed Number two instead (she already has her own place, disappointment)
Thanks for the tag @lavenderleahy!

one of my favorite bits in lord of the rings is something the movies didn't really try to do because it's entirely internal, but sam's carrying the ring and it starts trying to do its work on him, so he's having these intrusive visions of himself marching at the head of a vast and terrible army, and he just starts laughing because, me? samwise gamgee? sam gamgee the general sam gamgee the dark lord are you for real? man i just want to go home and do some gardening. and the ring gets frustrated and it starts trying to figure out other stuff that would actually tempt sam and it's finally like, okay, but hear me out: imagine if you could have...A REALLY REALLY BIG GARDEN
AND Sam responds with "Yeesh no, that is way too much garden man. I just want my garden"

Okay, but I am still wailing about how Milligan is described as unrecognizable after he regains his memory.
Like, can you imagine?
Having your very identity stripped from you, the essence of who you are, taken, and in such a way that even people who knew you would look you in the eyes and keep moving, unaware that you were once someone important to them.
Kate had such an important memory of her dad's voice, and even though memories can be distorted, you'd think she'd at least notice that it was similar to how Milligan talked, but no, not even a flicker of recognition.
I am just so emotional about this concept of him being a full entire person, and then he's stuck in such a mire of depression and exhaustion that he isn't even barely the same anymore. Thinking about how someone who knew him genuinely could have walked right past him, and had no clue.
If even Kate couldn't see her father in him, how drastic a change must that have been?
And then, for him to be back to that again, that would have been such a crazy amount of whiplash for Milligan! Imagine being in an inescapable emotional drought for a decade, and then suddenly springing back to your old habits like nothing happened. Muscle memory has meaning again, and words that were just sounds before are important and potent and real.
Just. Milligan Wetherall!!
Hey why don’t we include Milligan having lasting disabilities from falling from great heights in our fics? That man’s bones may heal but the trauma and the immense pain in his body undoubtedly linger.
I’m gonna have to make a disabled!Milligan fic, aren’t I?
