I remember as a kid the nearby small town had a "computer expert" who had a full storefront and office. If someone bricked their computer or it loaded with viruses he'd factory reset it for them and try to get it working again. He'd also buy, refurbish, rest, and resell old computers. Didn't realize until I was older and like, looking back on some of the tech stuff my mom needed help with and knew more about how software is priced that he was pirating it. Guy had a whole business set up where people who didn't know how computers worked would pay him 20 bucks to install Microsoft Office on their laptop because it was cheaper than buying it in the store and they didn't want to be bothered with figuring out how to install programs even if they could afford them normally. Like that guy was practically printing money well into the early 2000s. Very good hustle. Only small business owner I respect.

look you can't say [shakespeare character] HAS TO BE [thing] without exception in every single production, otherwise you're kind of misunderstanding why we put on these 400-year plays over and over again with different twists and modern adaptational choices each time. because theatre isn't stagnant. every actor & director chooses to focus on a different aspect of the play to highlight and draw out different messages and meanings from the same text. you can't be saying [shakespeare play] HAS TO include [this scene] or have [this interpretation] or portray something [this way] or whatever every single time without exception because WHYYYY would we be still putting them on!!! if every production of hamlet made hamlet the same age and put it in the same era and had gertrude know or not know claudius' murder and so on and so forth we would've stopped putting it on ages ago!!!! shakespeare's modern day appeal is its versatility !!!

want to show the complexity of gertrude's relationship with her son, and have her quiet complicity finally catch up to her in the last guilt-ridden effort to save her son? have her drink the poison knowingly.

want to emphasize the tragedy of the story and show the consequences of the depths claudius sank to? have her drink the poison by accident.

want to portray elsinore with an insular, suffocating atmosphere in which the rot and madness festers? cut fortinbras out.

want to emphasize the collateral damage of elsinore's deterioration on a national and international level, and leave a current of militaristic tension beneath? leave fortinbras in!

hamlet is too much of a complex and multi-layered play for ANYTHING in this show to be definitive!!! hamlet doesn't HAVE to be any age! fortinbras doesn't HAVE to be present or not present!! it's fair game as long as it makes for a good story in this iteration of it! nothing in hamlet HAS to be anything universally and i'm sick of posts claiming that it does

I wrote a long ass post about Hamlet’s Ophelia and I’m going through the notes because I am Unwell About It and this comment specifically jumped out at me

My argument was that Ophelia is a representation of women’s place in a wildly patriarchal society- permitted only to exist within the context of a man’s needs and desires, forced into these roles like sand in a bucket and left formless without it, an identity so defined by what men think and want that she can’t cope or continue on without them.

Extrapolating on this, I think it DOES comment on how one’s personhood and sense of self is formed by the perceptions and constraints forced upon them.

Yes, this is an existential read of Ophelia, but that doesn’t mean it ISN’T a feminist one- rather, I think it speaks on the essence of feminism itself. I think that it DOES speak on women at large, and intentional or not I think it IS a feminist allegory

That these rigid roles and the reinforcement of them isn’t just a restriction of freedoms but an existential threat to one’s own person, which can- like Ophelia- leave us all so possessed by music and flowers that we find ourselves nonsensically adrift in their pursuit.

when you step back an inch or two, it's kinda wild that one of thee most famous lines in all of english language literature to the point of it being routinely quoted out of context as an abstract representation of theater or classic lit as a whole is directly about contemplating suicide. which feels almost like a stupid thing to point out to me, a person who's been reading and watching shakespeare for fun since I was nine, like, yeah, that's the surface basic text, that soliloquy is about suicide, that's hamlet's whole deal, he's explicitly suicidal from his first scene and it forms the backbone of everything he does in the play, but people who aren't big into shakespeare are usually pretty taken aback when I say that's what that line means. "to be, or not to be, that is the question" <- the central big question playing on his mind and encompassing his life is whether he should Keep Being or Not Keep Being.

ever since a friend watched stratford festival 2022 (i think that’s the one?) hamlet with me and said “autistic polonius” i’ve been haunted by how maybe if you do play polonius completely straight (not heterosexually i mean like. straightforward) it’s actually kind of tragic. because then the guy is genuinely trying his best and failing so hard on every account. i kept on feeling insane about him putting his stupid schemes over his daughter’s well being while watching but if he genuinely thinks that the schemes are reasonable and like…make sense to do. dear God. he was literally trying his best for his family for real. awful! i am so sad. it also i guess makes me feel even More about ophelia and laertes mourning their father. Like of course any kid can care about a parent who sucks but I think it hits harder if it’s a parent whose suckage is like…not entirely intentional. When it’s like ‘yeah you shouldn’t have been doing that anyways but horrifying to realize your heart was in the right place.’

the actor of that prod also had a moment where he pretends to go catatonic for a bit / lose his place which implies old man dementia which genuinely does make me wonder if before oldmanification polonius was actually fairly competent but the decades are eating his brain and maybe laertes and ophelia are experiencing like…a more controlling/overly wordy version of their dad that has not always existed. like maybe he was always a bit wordy/on edge but his age (and the potentially implied death of their mother?) changed him. sometimes when ur parent gets old they change. y’know. which is also um so sad.
