Honestly, on a personal level all I really wanted from any more seasons of Wheel of Time was to see Mat in his hat and scarf combo. So I'm all good now I reckon.
when his Moriarty is more Mat Cauthon than his Mat ever was in The Wheel of Time.
being online is so scary aren't you guys worried about the world wide spider

omg that would be so fun!!! elan and I were just starting to yap about the expanse. i forgot steel liked the expanse too! I havent watched the show at all yet but from what ive heard from other book and show fans its really good. I’m on audiobook 7 of 9 right now and i started literally like 6 weeks ago so safe to say I’m all in. planning to watch the show after i finish reading, and then probably reread the series w the physical copies i just picked up.
its some of the BEST hard sci fi ive read in a long while, and incredibly well written characters with consistent, unique, FUN personalities and unique problem solving approaches but still with extensive and natural development throughout - so much fun to read, cant wait to see it on screen too.
and i know there are some changes between show vs book but i think the fan consensus is that the heart of it is there, so whichever youre down for pls join us in the reblogging and yapping
elan and steel, if you happen to have any recs for expanse blogs i would love to add some to my following list :))))
Ok ok - I'm on board. Now --
do I need to read the books first, or can I just watch the show? I've got a buttload of Audible credits if the books are A Must, so it's nbd, but I need to know
You can totally do show first!! i know a lot of people first watch the show and then post on the expanse subreddit like should I read the books?? and everyone's like yes do it!! so i think show first is equally a good way to start
my impression is that there are some characters that are flatter (and therefore perhaps less likable) in the show or that are merged for the purposes of getting things on screen, but yk thats how it goes and hopefully that just makes the book versions of characters all the more exciting when you get there. but yeah some minor plot differences from what I've heard as well.
also Shohreh Aghdashloo is in the show!!! you probably remember when Twitter was talking about her as a potential Cadsuane/Elaida and started things turning getting her cast in wheel of time. The show got canceled halfway through season six I believe? Which is also kind of when the books have a bit of a slump imo so that's unfortunate. but there was also a situation where the show kind of got canceled then I think Amazon picked it up and continued it, so I heard there's a shift in how things are filmed during one of the seasons when it changes over.
Okay hi hello! So I watched the first season before picking up the books, and. You can absolutely just watch the show, you won't be confused or radically missing out, at least so far as I got.
However.
There's a distinct vibe difference, at least to me. Some very weird background writing decisions were made (that thing about Holden's family background that was mentioned in one sentence and never referred to again and which just did not exist in the books.... like, why make it up??? just to name one that I can remember off the top of my head) and there's a whole bunch of unnecessary infighting added among the protagonist crew because clearly the existing plot wasn't tense enough or something...
But I didn't hate it. I do occasionally want to rewatch/finish watching it, but then I always go "or I could just reread the books" so.
So what I'm getting is Book Club time with adjunct TV watching and fanflailing? Sound about right?
The next crucial question is: am I going to find these books difficult to put away if I use them for my before-bed audiobook? I started listening to paranormal romance for my before-bed books because I was having trouble putting away my usual sf/f books, what, no, I can't stop NOW there's Major Stuff Happening and I can't just LEAVE in the middle??? With paranormal romance, at least the ones I listen to, it's effectively urban fantasy with more explicit sexytimes, but just as thorough worldbuilding and character development.
as someone who puts on audiobooks with a 15 minute timer as I'm falling asleep… I've switched to a one hour music timer instead of these books or I will not be sleeping :))

THE EXPANSE (2015-2022) S4E01 “NEW TERRA”
(no beers in) I lack a lot of the traits people typically define as human and on occasion it haunts me
so many mental health issues these days are due to the fact that we no longer put the gargoyles on buildings that used to scare away the evil spirits that cause mental illness
embroidery of some electric pylons on an old doiley
Gothic literature must be cursed to forever be misinterpreted by mainstream public because how did this happen
Dracula book: an evil count who only sees the world as a resource to be drained for his own pleasure is stopped by the group of people who deeply care for each other
Dracula in media: a tragic romantic hero, main love interest of one of the protagonists who must be liberated from her dull little life
Frankenstein book: any human has capacity for evil when completely abandoned and shunned by the world and the people who brought him into it
Frankenstein in media: don't play God because it's against nature's laws
Jekyll and Hyde book: repression and only caring about external appearances can cause your worst impulses to indulge themselves in dangerous ways if ignored for too long
Jekyll and Hyde in media: what if there was two of the same guy but one of them was evil and gross?
you've heard of death of the author, now get ready for death of the audience: where instead of basing your reaction on a thousand uninformed opinions online, you actually read the text and engage with it
Predictably, the abstract I've been dreading writing and therefore procrastinating on for several days took about ten minutes to write and has now been sent to the person who needed it.
I will learn nothing from this.
Perhaps not the case here.
However, for the sake of anyone who's been in a similar situation, I have personally found that when I'm procrastinating something (especially writing something) it's because I'm still mulling over the specifics. That is I'm still *working* on it despite the appearance to others (and myself perhaps...) that I am procrastinating. I am working out problems that I probably couldn't describe out loud if asked about but that are there none the less.
The best way I have found to fix this procrastination is to
1) recognize that I AM working on the project (albeit, in my mind) - this helps prevent guilt spiraling which only distracts me further.
2) Take some time to actively do this mental work so that I can speed up the process and feel productive.
This is often true. Sometimes you need to chew on it in your brain for a bit before you can actually do it.
In this case though I just had a headache and didn't wanna
Thinking about. Dragoned Age.
When mages follow the rules it's good for the Circle and when they don't follow the rules that is also good for the Circle. It's an ingenious system really.
Mages who follow orders are useful for obvious reasons and mages who don't can be made tranquil and immediately put to work generating revenue through enchantment work. Mages aren't supposed to have children but also it's not a big deal if they do because you can just take the kid after they're born and send them to the Chantry-run orphanages that the Templar order then recruits out of. If the mage survives their Harrowing then now you have a traumatized mage that is fully aware of how much power you hold over them and may even now associate you using that power with positive reward (taking abuse leads to praise, increased social standing with their peers, increased privileges, etc) and if they die, well, that's one less mage to deal with. The house always wins!
to me the absolutely funniest part of cunk on earth is the fact that every single scientist without fail says "not as far as i'm aware of" instead of "no" whenever she asks them the most insane question possible.
i dont know how much of that show is scripted but i think their reactions are genuine (?) and like. that's what scientists are really like. it's hilarious. all my uni professors do the same thing, they word every negative response as a "well sounds wrong to me but idk bro maybe i just haven't read about it yet so. whatever".
if there is one thing we hate it's definitive answers.
"if there is one thing we hate it's definitive answers" well i think it depends really
well that sure is me. (i mean, under certain circumstances :)
"I'm reluctant to say it can't happen, but that would contradict some other current theories and I'd be interested in how to reconcile that result."
A great attack against a rival in academia is to accuse them of not keeping on top of the literature in their field. "You didn't read that?!" is a gotcha. So, hedge your bets by saying you don't know for sure, because the stack of papers you haven't had a chance to read yet is implied and universally understood.
