ok I've realized that this is probably because this is otherwise a band of pale people with very dark eyes, whereas Maimone has a much browner skin tone and strikingly blue eyes:

but rather than rendering as "this guy has darker skin so shadows stand out on his face more and lighter eyes that seem washed out and catch highlights differently", in black and white it just feels like "this one white guy was photographed under completely different lighting conditions than the white guys standing next to him, somehow?"
