Any story which refers to Haiti as an impoverished nation, which is all of them, should also mention that when Haitians won their independence from France, French gunships showed up and demanded they pay something like 22 billion dollars in today's money to compensate France for the stolen land and enslaved people they could no longer exploit

It took Haiti over a hundred years to pay that ransom and it's difficult to explain just how badly that fucked up their entire development, especially since France also demanded a 50% discount on everything they bought from Haiti just to make it harder. Like! No wonder they're impoverished!

I also think that the strength gap is at least partially manufactured women would in fact be stronger overall if little girls were encouraged to do physically taxing games and activities and eat their fill while they’re growing vs having to constantly diet and be sedentary indoors (or god forbid do intense cardio while under-eating). EXACTLY. I work in a library and one of our regular patrons is a foster parent and they were fostering a teenager who couldn't read and refused to learn. I'm talking 15 and couldn't read a board book for toddlers. And the patron and I would regularly discuss what a disadvantage this would be for them and how easy it would be for people to take advantage of the kid simply because they refused to learn to read (and it WAS a refusal. They'd been tested for a variety of learning disabilities, asked many times about the issue, etc. This wasn't a knee jerk reaction. They simply thought that because all they wanted in life was a marriage and a family that they didn't need to learn and they didn't want to because it was hard.). If you can learn to read, you need to do it. You need to be as literate as you can be, or people who DO have the skill are going to be able to take advantage of you.

i really thought the point of "being lgbt+ doesn't absolve you of racism as a white person" was that white people arent absolved of racism by being marginalized but it really seems like people think other marginalizations make it okay. no being disabled doesn't do it. no being poor doesnt do it. we need to fight against racism actively no matter what.
