Summary : You and Loki have to work together for a specific mission. On your way there, things might get tensed with the Trikster who seems to love testing your patience and resistance.
âYou want me to do what ?!â You exclaimed in total astonishment.
âWe know itâs a lot to ask, but we wouldnât if it werenât important.â Steve defended.
You scoffed, throwing your hands up in the air.
âLook, we need that usb key and who knows what theyâll do with it. Nobody exterior to this building knows that heâs on our side-â
âHow can you even trust him ?!â You cut him off.
âI donât, ok ? Far from it ! But I trust Thor and if he says his brother is trying to make it right, Iâm ready to give it a shot.â
You shook your head in disbelief, looking at Natasha for support. But she just shrugged with her arms crossed over her chest while listening to the Captainâs arguments.
âI canât send him alone, we need an agent with him on the field.â
âDoes it really have to be me ? You have lots of very competent agents that could do itâŠâ
âNone that know his ways, the mission or that isnât known by the public like you. Itâs perfect. The guy weâre after will have no suspicions concerning Loki, he still thinks heâs a war criminal, his presence to this kind of party will look perfectly normal.â
Noticing your tensed silence, he continued.
âHe wonât be able to use his powers, weâll make sure of that. And weâll have an eye on the whole operation. You wonât get recognised, no one knows who you work for. Youâll just be his date for the nightâŠâ
You cringed internally at the word. Date. That word right there was precisely the reason you didnât want to do it. Even if it was fake, it would have to look real on the field. And you would have chosen about anyone but the god to be your partner. Even Director Fury would have been more acceptable ! But noooo, of course, it had to be him. With his eyes that always seemed to see right through your soul and clothes. And that stupid little smirk he wore every time you caught him staring.
But you couldnât decently tell Steve all that. To be honest, you felt kinda selfish for putting so much resistance. Captain America had crashed his plane, thinking heâd die, to save people, and you couldnât even go on a fake date for one night ! So, instead, you just pinched the bridge of your nose with a deep sigh.
âWellâŠgood luck convincing him, heâs not as compliant as I am !â
âI just got a text from Fury,â said Natasha, âhe agreed to do it.â
You gritted your teeth with the urgent need to bang your head against a wall. âOf course he did !â
They gave you an apologetic look as you nervously paced around the room.
âWhen you said youâll have an eye on the operation, what do you mean ? Because if you put a device on me, you can be sure Iâll get caught. Thereâll most certainly be a search and they have the means to buy plenty of detectors.â
Steve nodded, his brows furrowed as he realized things wouldnât go as smoothly as heâd planned.
âYou think we should let the two of you go without back-up ?â Asked Natasha.
You shrugged. âYou can stand around in case things get ugly. Plus, Steve just said he wouldnât be able to use his powers, right ?â
âCorrect. Heâll wear special cuff bracelets thatâll block his magic. It was created on Asgard especially for him. But I still donât trust him.â
âNeither do I !â You grumbled, already feeling a headache overcome your senses. âBut what choice do we have ? Youâre right, we need that key or, more importantly, they canât have it. Itâs a perfect opportunity..â
Steve kept that hard expression plastered on his face. You could tell he wasnât very fond of that plan himself, and that he didnât like to upset you.
âI donât like it.â He said.
âNo one likes it.â Replied Natasha with a scowl on her face.
You brushed it off before you spoke, trying to convince yourself at the same time. âOh, you know, Iâve had worse dates. It wonât be that badâŠâ
âThen you have even more terrible tastes than I thought.â Natasha commented.
âThanks, RomanoffâŠâ
She just smirked before exiting the conference room. You finished talking about the details of the operation with Steve and then went for the door yourself.
âYou know Iâm sorry, right ? About all this⊠I wish I could find another way but weâre sort of running out of timeâŠâ
âI know, Stevie, itâs ok. Itâs only a Norse God and criminal organization after all !â
You gave him your most sarcastic smile to which he couldnât help but chuckle, despite the situation.
âIâm sure youâll do great !â He assured, opening the door for you. âPlus, better you than one of us !â
You squinted your eyes at him and grumbled, âAlways the charmer, Captain, thatâs so sweet !â
âYou misunderstood. I meant that it probably wouldnât have the same odds of success if it werenât for you.â
âWhy is that ?â You questioned while walking down the hall.
âI donât know⊠Sometimes it just seems he doesnât hate you as much as he hates us.â
HA ! You did your best to try and not look like you just been put into hot, bumbling water but it still really felt like it. You forced yourself to laugh lightly but to your ears, it sounded a lot more like the screech of a dying pterodactyl.
âLucky me !â You managed to articulate without choking.
Steve have you a weird look but didnât say anything as you parted ways to go to your respective rooms for the night. Tomorrow, shit would get real. Speaking of which, you were almost at you door when you came across the one person you didnât want to see tonight. You seriously considered taking a run in the opposite direction but it was now too late, and you would never give him that satisfaction. You kept your eyes firmly fixed on the end of the hall, even if you could feel his on you. You hated how he always had a way to make you feel like you had the leading role on a stage, under the biggest projector in the world.
You made the mistake of looking his way for a brief second and regretted instantly when you saw the faintest of smirks pulling at the corner of his lips. That bastard. As he approached, he greeted you with perfect composure. âY/NâŠâ
âLoki.â You answered bluntly.
âI assume I will be seeing you tomorrow nightâŠâ he murmured in a teasing voice, audibly smiling.
You swallowed the lump in your throat, head held high, and snapped. âPiss off !â
His footsteps stopped as you walked pass him and you could vividly feel his stare at the back of your skull. His unnerving smile probably on his sculpted face once again. You quickened your pace and got into your room like a runaway into a shelter. You closed the door a bit too harshly before pressing your back against it and exhaling deeply. Dear God, this was going to be a bloody disasterâŠ
You collapsed on your bed with a grunt of annoyance and passed out from exhaustion until morning. The next day was spent with last minute preparations for the mission and you carefully avoiding any interaction with the Trikster unless absolutely necessary. You would get enough of that in a few hours !
When the time came, you reluctantly put on your chosen outfit. It was a long, dark green dress with a slit going up mid-thigh allowing you to move more freely. The dress was quite simple but elegant, the thin golden belt around your waist adding a nice touch to it. You werenât really used to that kind of clothing though, working for S.H.I.E.L.D. didnât leave much place for dressing up. You did your make-up and hair as it would certainly help to help you go undercover. You stood in front of the mirror to admire the result and frowned at your reflection. It was now very clear that whoever had picked that outfit had taken great care of choosing those specific colours. You gritted your teeth, knowing it wouldnât go unnoticed by the god.
There was a soft knock at the door and you went to open it after grabbing your small handbag. Steve smiled sweetly at you, knowing your nerves were this close from breaking, and said. âYou look great !â
You narrowed your eyes and replied, âThanksâŠBut what are you not telling me ?â
âTony picked the colours and the dress, Iâm sorry, I had no idea !â
âIâm gonna kill him.â
He winced before following you into the hall and into the living room. The entire team was gathered there, waiting for you. Thor immediately proceeded to greet you warmly. âLady Y/N, you look breathtaking as always !â He exclaimed in a deep booming voice.
You grinned at him while rolling your eyes. âThanks, Point Break.â
You felt another pair of eyes fixed on you, and knew exactly who they belonged to, which was why you were doing everything you could to ignore him. Instead, you went over the details with team once more. You had the pen (disguised laser) in your purse, no micro or the signal would get you caught, everything was ready.
âThereâs a car waiting outside, itâll take you where you need to go.â Informed Tony, the ghost of an amused smile on his face.
He winked at your cold stare aimed at him, knowing full well you wouldnât say a thing about the colours of the dress in front of everyone. Oh, you would so beat his ass later.
âYouâll be ok from here ?â Steve looked at you with a hint of worry in his eyes. âWe need to go to the quinjet while you head to the party with Loki.â
The name made you look at the god for the first time that evening. He was wearing an elegant suit, entirely black, that made him look like he was dressed in shadows. His dark hair were pulled back and the ivory skin of his face offered a startling contrast. Obviously, he was handsome as ever, pointless to deny it, and that fact didnât help to ease your nerves.
Your heart missed a beat when you noticed he was also watching you intently, not giving any clue as to what he was thinking. The moment didnât last though, as Steve and Thor decided to escort you to the elevator after a brief nod from you.
âIâm warning you, brother, do not try and betray my trust.â Thor boomed, looking serious despite his obvious affection for his sibling. âLady Y/N is not one to cross !â
âYour lack of faith breaks my heart, dear brother.â Loki mused.
âThis is not a joke !â Steve intervened.
You noticed he was trying to appear more impressive than he already was, probably because the god himself was quite tall.
âNo funny tricks, and donât try and take advantage of the fact that Y/N plays as your date, if you-â
âAlright, thatâs enough.â You quickly cut in. âWeâve been over this. Thank you for your concern but I can take care of myself.â
Steve gave you the usual puppy eyes, visibly unhappy about this whole situation. Loki just grinned in amusement before replying, âI can assure you, I intend to be nothing but a gentlemanâŠâ
You rolled your eyes, your patience already running thin even though the night had barely begun. The doors of the elevator opened with a ding and you wasted no time in climbing in, eager to get his over with. And as soon as the Trickster joined you, you pressed the button to close the doors and begin your way down. You usually enjoyed being at the top of the building but that night, you would have given everything to be on the first floor. It was not that the cabin was particularly small but, without sticking to you like glue, your partner was still a bit too close for your liking. It was still a respectable distance though, so it was mostly just you, and your pride prevented you from stepping aside. Instead, you just stole a glance right, only to meet his piercing eyes already on you. A bit startled by this unexpected attention, you had to keep yourself from showing any surprise or discomfort.
âWhat ?â You snapped.
The ghost of a smirk played on his lips at the sight of you already so troubled.
âInteresting choice of colours you have hereâŠâ he murmured, folding his hands behind his back.
A lump formed down your throat as you gritted your teeth. âNot my choice though, so donât get any ideas.â You grumbled, now focused on the closed doors.
âWhat ideas would you want me to get ? It was merely an observationâŠâ
You scoffed at his seemingly innocent tone.
âThe Captain certainly seemed to appreciate you in this outfitâŠâ he added slowly.
Your head snapped back in his direction but before you could say a thing, the cabin stopped and opened. Two other agents were apparently waiting to get in, you werenât in the entry yet, but upon seeing who you were with, they gave you an apologetic smile and one of them said, âWeâll wait.â
You sighed in annoyance, reluctantly watching the doors close again. Right now, another presence would have been just fine ! Once you were on your way down once again, you fully turned towards the annoying god to confront him about his previous words.
âAlright, what was that supposed to mean ?â You clenched your fists, staring him down.
Loki turned as well, the two of you now facing each other. âI just didnât think heâd have such ambitious tastes. It seems to me that he took quite a liking in youâŠâ
You tried your best to suppress the light blush threatening to show up on your face, and exclaimed, âThatâs ridiculous !â
âOh certainly !â He replied smugly. âOne could have thought heâd know he is not your type by nowâŠâ
You raised your eyebrows in defiance and taunted, âAnd what makes you so sure heâs not my type ?â
You immediately regretted your words as the god seemed to take it as a personal challenge. He took a step forward, reducing the distance between your two bodies to only a few inches. The intensity in his eyes at this very moment wasnât like anything you had ever seen before. You couldnât even remember the last time you had been looked at in such a way, and you were sure your heart had stopped beating for a second. You couldnât turn your own eyes away, trapped in this proximity. His slow breathing brushed slightly against your face, and he was so close you could catch the discreet and yet intoxicating smell emanating form his skin.
You stayed very still, waiting for his next move. A shiver ran down your spine under his hypnotic stare, and like he knew, the corner of his lips quirked up and he said in what almost sounded like a purr.
âOh darling, trust me, Iâm sureâŠâ
The elevator finally came to a halt and put an end to your misery. It didnât seem to phase him though. His arm shot up at light speed to press a button and keep the doors closed. Your heart missed a beat and you had to put great efforts to not let your state affect your breathing. If he saw how you felt about his demeanour even in the slightest, you were doomed.
âWhat do you want ?â You growled, blood pumping through your veins.
âWhat do you want ?â He immediately shot back, his eyes never leaving yours.
You let out an incredulous chuckle to hide the fact that you were shaking inside, and took a tiny step forward. Your bodies were now almost pressed against one another, and a satisfied glint appeared in his eyes. But it didnât stay. Instead of doing whatever he thought you were gonna do, you pushed him out of the way and pressed the right button, the doors opening without a sound.
âLetâs go, the carâs waiting.â You simply said.
It wasnât an entire victory though. Your pulse was still beating wildly in your throat and your breathing was slightly shaky, and he knew that. Of course he knew ! He now displayed a more neutral expression but, strangely, the smugness had left his eyes forâŠsomething else. Actually, he looked kind of impressed. You didnât linger on that feeling and preferred to glare at him before storming off towards the exit of the building. His footsteps soon followed and you took a deep breath to calm yourself down. This was going to be a long night !
Alright, tell me what you thought ! Thank you for reading, there will be a part 2 soon !
