@kara55
i hate how i always wanna gush about ranni and miquella being so deeply interconnected thematically and how they're meant to be pretty much equals in all ways, just with complete opposite ideals despite neither of them actually provide a universally "good' solution and they commit many of the same sins in their path to "rid the world of all that came before" but the fandom's only braincell is fixated on immersing itself in this madeup story to prove one is good and one is evil and either way people will take offense based purely on the fact that the player was given an active hand in one's story while opposing the other and i just think that's genuinely clever and i love both characters for that lol
I think I might be about to send a deranged email
Couldn't find an email address so it was instead a deranged form submission
HUGE NEWS
Wait actually we should do this. Theres a serious blood shortage in the US(and canada iirc) right now
there is! reminder that eligibility is less stupid than it used to be and blood donation is a good thing to do most of the time. especially o-negative people.
[Image ID: Tumblr tag reading: finally fic that requires a blood sacrifice /End ID]
the amount of lawsuits these exploited children are going to be filing 20 years from now is going to be crazy and im all for it
TIL a family in Georgia claimed to have passed down a song in an unknown language from the time of their enslavement; scientists identified the song as a genuine West African funeral song in the Mende language that had survived multiple transmissions from mother to daughter over multiple centuries (x)
In 1997 Ameliaâs daughter, Mary Moran, and other members of the Moran family were invited to Sierra Leone, West Africa, where they were welcomed in Freetown by Sierra Leoneâs President and then flown by helicopter to the countryâs interior. Â There, in the small village of Senehun Ngola, Mary and Bendu Jabati met and sang this song together for the first time. Â Years earlier, Benduâs grandmother had told her that this song, which had been passed down in her village from mother to daughter for centuries, would one day reunite her to long-lost relatives.
In addition to finding out where in Africa her ancestors were abducted into slavery, Mary Moran discovered the meaning of the Mende song: a processional hymn for the final farewell to the spirit, it was sung in Senehun Ngola by women as they prepared the body of a loved one for burial.
(The OP's link leads to a site with a recording of the song sung by both Mary Moran and her mother, Amelia)
Because the original link was broken, I tracked down a news story about how the song is continuing to help Mary Moran's relatives find their African communities:
Also, there's an apparently sanctioned link to the full documentary about tracing the song.
I was really fascinated to learn that the song was originally recorded by none other than Lorenzo Dow Turner, the founder of Gullah studies. Gullah was dismissed (by white people) as a nonsense language until a Black linguist trained on Old and Middle English came along in the early 20th century, and I love him.
After MINDHACK Ch1: Wow this game is so neat! I hate FORMAT already but I can tell this will be one of my favorite games of all time.
After MINDHACK Ch2: Okay this is somehow even better! I can see how well this game's themes are developing as the story continues. I feel terrible in a good way.
After MINDHACK Ch3: What the fuck.
After MINDHACK Ch4: I'm going to personally kill FORMAT.
After MINDHACK Ch5: Oh no.
After MINDHACK Ch6: I feel awful. I feel great. I'm having so much fun. I need this to stop. Why didn't I stop. This is the greatest game I have ever played.
And I think that Ralsei's relationship with hope is as interesting (if not more) as Susie's, and I don't mean this in a "Ooooh Ralsei is secretly The Girl With Hope Crossed On Her Heart", it's just that it's so so layered and bittersweet and sometimes it feels like Ralsei's desperately clinging onto their hope, as if wishing and praying and hoping were the only things keeping them going, while other times is as if they had hope in spite of themself, almost as if they feel guilty about hoping. But no, Susie's the Hope Symbol, Ralsei and afterthought and y'all cowards.
i would so love to know what was going on in this persons head. i would rather be shot dead than sneak food into a movie theatre. What?
Every time you go in a public place and something ISNâT disgusting itâs because somebody cleaned it. Every time you feel comfortable using a public bathroom or sitting at a restaurant table or setting something on a gas station counter or playing on a playground itâs because somebody cleaned it.
Thank you to everyone who cleans the world, especially those who are underpaid and under appreciated.
And brother?
I hurt people
there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well
and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it
source another source
the researchers found that being online didnt make people more hostile, but that being online allowed already hostile people to dominate forum conversations, and the less aggressive people were much less likely to reply or engage, ending in just the aggressive people bickering at eachother

I love my job, but reblogging employment jelly for someone else I love.
The rest of the thread is here.
tl;dr: Donât monetize AO3, kids. You wonât like what happens next.
read this thread. this is by far the most concise explanation of a lot of different issues that iâve seen in fandom spaces in a while. cosigning both the linked thread and the thread about aus/uk/can law thatâs linked in-thread.
AHDHXHEBSG TWITTER WRITERS DID WHAT NOW???? AND PEOPLE PAID THEM????
If someone has never taken a class that includes copyright law, they may not know this stuff, so I donât necessarily blame random people for not knowing what copyright is, but like⊠maybe just maybe itâs something that should be taught????
Just another reminder, because this always drives me crazy, but even if monetizing your fic was 100% unambiguously legal and protected, AO3 would still not let you do it because AO3 was founded and is supported by people like me who want a fandom community that is completely divested from making money off of fic.
Yes, this. Lots of fanworks on AO3 are unambiguously legal. Fics based on Shakespeare plays and fairy tales and Greek mythology and The Great Gatsby and your original character from your D&D game are not violations of copyright, because no copyright applies to those things.
AO3 still doesnât let you monetize those things on the site, because we donât want the site to be commercial! Because thatâs not what itâs for!
Itâs not there for you (generic you) to make money off the efforts of the people who build and maintain the site for free! We arenât getting paid for the work we do to give you a nice site to use, just like you arenât getting paid for the work you do to create whatever art you share there. Because fandom is supposed to be a community where we share with each other, and therefore we all benefit.
The deal is, we give you a free, stable, safe platform to host your works. In exchange, you get a site that isnât covered in ads and tip jars and links to gofundme and âread the next chapter at my patreonâ. You get one goddamn place on the internet that isnât trying to make money off you. And we will defend that space and keep it non-commercial.
If you want to make money off your fics, you can instead post them somewhere like royal Road. âOh, but Royal Roadâs culture is so much more negative and stressful and lacks the supportive norms of AO3!â Yeah, because people are trying to make money there. Half the userbase is treating it as a storefront and hustling is the natural social consequence of that. AO3âs culture can only exist because itâs not commercial.
