This blog is used solely for posting about the ORV Retranslation Project that some fans are working on.

Q: What is the ORV Retranslation Project?

The web novel Omniscient Reader's Viewpoint currently has two available translations in English: One which is official (though incomplete at this time 8/5/25), and an unofficial one. While we are grateful for both, both translations fail on a couple fronts that leave us feeling like English audiences are missing out on the "true" ORV. As such, we have taken it upon ourselves to Retranslate ORV.

Q: What does retranslating it do?

We are attempting to keep as close as we can to the original text of ORV and maintain its core feeling with as little changes to it as possible. We want the authors' intent and artistry to come through. The current free translation is machine translated (MTL) and loses the "voice" and personality. It is also full of so many grammar mistakes that it is difficult to read, and it turns many people off from ever trying to read ORV because of it. The official English has changed a lot of the "voice" of the story and localized it quite a bit (in ways that are too subtle to put into words, but build up to a completely different tone and feeling when you compare it to the original) so we feel it does not capture the story well either. This is not to dissuade people from reading it, but it is not the "true" ORV we'd like people to see.

We understand it's not possible to capture everything due to neither of us being native speakers and because some nuance will always be lost in translation, but we plan to do our best.

Q: Is it the full novel? Is it the ebook or the original?

We will be making the novel available by volume (There are a total of 23 for the Main Story. Not confirmed for the Side Story) when we finish retranslating and cleaning up our edits. We are retranslating the original version, not the ebook version. If you want the ebook version, please purchase it from official sources.

However, our version will contain some ebook edits within it where applicable. So, it is not "purely" the original. The parts we take from the ebook will not change the integrity of the original and will be minimal, for the most part and with rare exception.

Q: How do we access it?

We will be posting the link(s) to the downloadable document(s) here for 24 hours upon release, and then we will delete the posts. We recommend following this blog and keeping an eye out for when we warn a new volume will be released. If you miss the release, you can contact us at one of the sources below, and we can go from there.

Q: Does it cost money?

We only want two things from the people who wish to read the retranslation as a "payment": Please purchase from official sources (whether Ize Press's official English, or the Korean raws) in order to directly support the authors SingNSong, and do not repost the links to these documents on public platforms. Otherwise, it's completely free. No need to show us proof of purchase of the official sources either. We do not want any money for this translation.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (2025) Sandfall Interactive

MASSIVE spoilers for Clair Obscur. Do not read this if you haven’t played the game.

Musings mostly. Under a cut for your safety.

Through the Looking Glass: False protagonists, earning your tragedy, and teenage heroines.

Clair Obscur begins by tricking you. This is good storytelling. All stories are lies of course, and the really good ones are the best at lying. They get you on their side. They earn the trick. And usually they manage to say something true in the process.

Gustave is not a protagonist let alone the protagonist of Clair Obscur. This is pretty obvious to anyone who’s played a lot of jrpgs (that tiny ability tree) and certainly to anyone versed in narrative strategy. Everything we know about him, we learn from another character, making him feel likable but a bit hollow. Of course, this also helps with the trick. If you’ve played jrpgs, you’re quite used to blank slate protagonists designed to enable projection and reflection. But here it’s a straightforward false protagonist. Gustave dies at the end of the first act. He dies protecting the heroine, Maelle. He dies so that the main protagonist of the game–Verso–can step into his rightful place. He dies as a reference to Aerith’s sacrifice. He dies to set up several very necessary thematic dominos. It’s a wonderful trick.

Those who know not, that they are not.

All of this hinges on Gustave’s relative blankness. If you’re not especially susceptible to projecting onto characters, this moment won’t have much emotional impact, and the mounting dramatic stakes will contrast nicely. If you are susceptible, you’re now primed for the increasing tragedy of the story. Regardless, your time with Gustave and his relative blankness has set up everything that matters in Clair Obscur’s story. Gustave doesn’t know he isn’t ‘real’. Neither do we, even as we start to catch onto the trick. We’re too invested in the struggle he represents. He’s fighting for a fictional tomorrow for people who only ever existed in the mind of a child and his grieving family. You too can take up that fight. You can step into Maelle’s denial and create a doomed fantasy. And the real gift of this game is that you’ll want to. You’ll want the bad ending. It will rip your heart out to make Alice leave wonderland. You’ll have to kill your real protagonist to do it. You’ll have to hurt the heroine. You’ll have to give up the dream of ever seeing these beautiful fantasies again.

Tomorrow comes. For those who come after.

Gustave is the map to what’s ultimately asked of the player, a clever use of the tendency to self insert in a game that’s treading very familiar ground. Verso, in contrast, is equally unreal yet a true protagonist. A reflection that’s become self aware and self contained. He’s more demanding as a character, resisting projection and pushing our perspective into his own. Importantly, he knows he’s in a story, so he can take control. Which is why he can bring about a good ending. The end of the cycle.

You can of course refuse. Specifically, the heroine herself will refuse the call to live. To step outside her role as heroine in a fictional world. She’ll lose herself in her reflection. And you’ll want to do it. You’ll want to force the last piece of a dead man’s soul to continue endlessly creating a false version of himself to suffer under the denial of our heroine. You’ll want to bring Gustave back for her. Maybe for you as well. But it’s cruel. The refusal here isn’t just immaturity. It’s pathological. It’s destructive. It’s hollow. And you’ll feel it. In Verso’s ominous recital. In Maelle’s regret. Alice needs to go back through the looking glass in the end. Refusal is something worse than death.

BUT. I'm so not okay about this. Not okay at all. I don't think I've ever been in as much denial about a video game's character death. I literally reloaded and finished cleaning out the location first before going through that scene again. I went and made a gifset ffs instead of playing more. And I still can't wrap my mind around it. Props to Sandfall for not being afraid of killing off their main character in act I, sure, but? I. Am. Not. Okay. 😭

Okay I’m currently furious that migraines are often so blindly easy to treat and I had to find this out myself at the age of 26 when I’ve been to a neurologist since I was 11 lol so I’m about to teach you two neat and fast little tricks to deal with pain!

The first is the sternocleidomastoid muscle, or the SCM muscle.

This big red section is responsible for pain around the eye, cheekbone, and jaw, as well as some temple pain. Literally all you have to do is angle your head down a little, angle it away from the side that hurts, and then you can gently pinch and rub that muscle. I find it best to start at the bottom and travel upwards. The relief is so immediate! You can increase pressure as you feel comfortable doing so.

The second is a fast and easy stretch that soothes your vagus nerve, which is the nerve responsible for calming you down. The vagus nerve, for those unfamiliar, is stimulated by deep breathing such as yawning, sighing, singing, or taking a deep breath to calm your anger in a tense situation.

You can stretch this out by sitting up as straight as possible (this does not have to be perfect to work) and interlacing your fingers. Put your hands on the back of your head with your thumbs going down the sides of your neck and, while keeping your face forward, look all the way to one side with just your eyes. Hold that until you feel the urge to breathe deeply or yawn, or until you can tell there’s a change. Then do the same thing on the other side. When you put your arms down, you should clearly be able to turn your head farther in both directions. If the first session doesn’t get rid of your migraine, rest and repeat as many times as necessary. I even get a little fancy with it and roll my eyes up and down along the outer edge sometimes to stretch as much as I can.

If you need a visual here’s a good video on it. I know some of the language they use seems questionable but this is real and simple science and should not be discarded because it’s been adopted by the trendy wellness crowd!

I seriously cannot believe I didn’t hear a word of this from any doctor in my life. Additionally, if you get frequent recurring migraines, you may want to see a dietician. Migraines can be caused by foods containing histamines, lectin, etc. and can also be caused by high blood pressure in specific situations such as exercise, stress, and even sex.
