i can't cope
A regular part of my job is trying to reach out to people who have been quietly trying to make their community a better place; the volunteers, the teachers, the fucking. People who rehabilitate injured wild owls in a Quonset hut in the woods, and to a one this is the kind of person who immediately reviles at recognition. The kind of person who immediately says that they never got into this to get praise for it, and that theyâd infinitely prefer to quietly plug away at this anonymously forever.
And from this Iâve always drawn two conclusions:
To always distrust Mr. Beast and his ilk who always want their acts of charity done on film, because the people who really want to do good and have no motives to do it besides the doing it never want recognition for it, and
That there are, in the dark, in the quiet, always people who are doing good, and the reason you donât hear about it is because theyâd rather die than receive recognition for it, but theyâre real; they do exist. And you are never alone
Character has a PhD: theyâre really smart and knowledgable about their field!
Character has 2 PhDs: either they did a dual degree program and are braggy about it, had a life-changing experience after their first degree and pivoted their whole career, or they find the structure of being a PhD student, despite all its stress, more comfortable and familiar than the stress of finding a Real Job and have a very indulgent advisor.
Character has 3 PhDs: who keeps accepting them to PhD programs. Either this person needs psychological help or their department needs to be investigated for its academic standards. Probably both
Character has 4+ PhDs: if they arenât an undercover vampire or something then no they donât lol
#this is why martin dubois weirds me out #who let him get phds in physics chemistry AND biology #does he have any industry experience at all
Funny enough this post was prompted by learning this fact about book!DuBois. Looking at Andy Weir saying âDr. DuBois has three PhDsâ straight in the face and going. Dude. No He Doesnât.
The favorites people are tagging here include Bruce Banner (7 PhDs), Engineer Team Fortress 2 (11 PhDs), and Stanford Pines (12 PhDs), and like, of course that is not how it works, that is not how anything works, but they come from cartoony universes that operate on cartoon logic. Looking at TF2 and going âthatâs not how that worksâ is not the point of it.
Andy Weir is supposedly trying really hard to make everything in his books realistic, or at least plausible. Thatâs his whole schtick! This is a world meant to be taken seriously! But his aversion to learning/acknowledging how human social institutions work in the name of Not Being Politicalâą produces some real howlers that are impossible to take seriously. Eva Strattâs âI can do what I wantâ permit is the famous one, and the idea that Grace got a personal attack paper petty enough to end his career through peer review really strains credulity to me, but DuBoisâs three PhDs in very closely related fields is another. Thatâs just not how PhD programs work. This is not about any given characterâs capability, this is about how PhD programs are not things you just keep adding to like thatâonce you have one, you go on to do research, write research papers and monographs, not more PhDs. Your PhD already proves you know how to do research! Thatâs the point of it, you donât go prove it again, and any subsequent PhD program you apply to will seriously question why exactly you want to! Weir presumably wants to convey that DuBois is both very smart and very accomplished, that Project Hail Mary recruited the best of the best. Instead I look at this and go âthis is a fake character and Andy Weir does not know what heâs talking aboutâ and it breaks my suspension of disbelief.
If I was inventing this character and wanted to immediately convey that he was incredibly smart, accomplished, and the best of the best, Iâd say DuBois has a dual PhD in biology and chemistry, and Grace recognizes him as the guy who got a MacArthur fellowship after winning the Nobel Prize for Chemistry two years ago. A dual degree, a MacArthur Fellowship, a Nobel Prize, several dozen published papers (or even better, a paper that Grace has cited at some point!), these are the kinds of markers anyone serious would give DuBois that actually convey what I assume Weir was going for, that âthree PhDsâ does not.
I want to make a tiny point on the "Grace got a personal attack paper petty enough to end his career through peer review". This is entirely possible, not sure the career ending has happened before but its definitely happened enough to ruin people's credibility in their field. I recently got an archaeology degree and there would be papers written back and forth to discredit, disparage, and refute other people's theories and findings, especially in the early 1900s. I can't find the people we went over in my theories class but it got nasty.
Iâm not 100% on how the process works, but his peer reviewers were probably colleagues who were just as annoyed with the field but were scared to voice their opinions. He could have essentially been their sacrifice.
Itâs not impossible, yeah. Real-life papers criticizing each otherâs theories can get pretty strident, and itâs always possible for people to decide they are sick of this dude. The thing is, having a weird idea that disagrees with everyone else in your fieldâand even getting snarky about itâis not on its own a career-killer. Nobody believes in the Chaco Meridian theory, but Steve Lekson is still a professor and still allowed to write things. Yeah he had 20 years of much more normal work under his belt before he hit everyone with that, which Iâm sure helped a lot, but being snarky and prodding the Established Theories is his whole deal and it hasnât hurt his career. Paulette Steeves has a bunch of academic awards. When Todd Surovell et al. published a bombshell paper claiming Dillehay did everything wrong at Monte Verde and itâs actually not pre-Clovis at all, they werenât blackballed from academia, they mostly got eyerolls and a lot of annoyed response papers. They still have jobs. Every field has eccentrics and disagreements and people who are frustrated with The Establishment, it wouldnât be academia if it didnât. And trust me, âlife doesnât have to be water-based, nor confined to specific temperature rangesâ is WAY less controversial in real-life astrobiology than âMonte Verde is only 6,000 years oldâ or âChaco Canyon was a state level society whose rulers founded PaquimĂ©â is in archaeology.
So what could possibly have been in that paper that pissed everyone off SO bad they never wanted to work with Grace again, but the journal was still willing to publish it? The most recent big infamous career-killing take in archaeology was âNAGPRA is basically the same as creationism, and handling Indigenous ancestorsâ skulls is this white womanâs rightâ! Itâs hard for me to come up with something believable Grace could publish thatâs on that level.
(Also, scientists in the first half of the 1900s could do basically whatever the hell they wanted in a way that does not fly today. Grace meanwhile got his PhD in the 2010s. Which is not to say that academic beefs where people go Youâre Stupid And Wrong at each other donât still happenâSurovell vs. Dillehayâs beef got published this yearâbut you do have to hew to certain standards of professionalism while doing so. Otherwise your peer reviewers will most likely be like dude you canât say that in an academic article, revise and resubmit.)
This is why I actually do prefer the version where Grace goes âeveryone thinks Iâm crazy just because I donât believe thereâs anything special about hydrogen and oxygenâ and Stratt responds, paraphrased, âno, everyone thinks youâre an asshole because you insulted your colleague at a conference in front of everyone.â Like yeah thatâd do it.
(Itâs also why I keep beating the drum that the whole backstory feels way more real and resonant if Grace were a womanâor, as @gaudebo has been writing about, Black! Like yeah the same eccentricities and uncollaborative behaviors that tend to get forgiven in white men do not tend to offer women or people of color the same second chances.)
Anyway TL;DR there are ways it could be possibleâsympathetic peer reviewers, unprofessional insults against more established colleagues, a journal editor who either got complacent or is courting controversy for attention, everyone deciding this is the last straw regarding a guy they already found annoyingâbut itâs just⊠kind of an absurd thing to happen the way Weir seems to describe it happening.
As far as vicious academic rivalries go, Cope and Marsh have a LOT to answer for in setting the tone for how bad it could get.
"Let's destroy knowledge WITH DYNAMITE in order to screw each other over!"
Thing is, though... academia has, in fact, moved on from that level of animosity. In the same field, a century later, the big names just sniped at each other with things like one of them seeing an expy of himself get eaten by a T-Rex in a Jurassic Park movie and calling his rival with a joking boast of "See, I was right, they are predators!"
Keep thinking about this Austin Walker post that now lives in my brain. It's a reply to people saying genAI can help creators 'develop concepts' and waste less time on research (x)

WHY TF WOULD I SETTLE FOR SOME RANDOM COMPUTER TO LOOK IT UP FOR ME???!!!!!
Do you know how fun it is finding out what the weather was like in August-October a few years after the witch trials? No, seriously! I know what the weather was like- ACCORDING TO RECORDED DOCUMENTS- from CENTURIES before I was born in a state I'd never been to, and was able go use it to create a supporting backstory behind why my story's curse existed! Freakin AI could never make me as happy as researching obscure data!
From a fanfic writer angle, would you rather rewatch or reread or replay what you're writing about with a critical eye to better understand its nuance... or ask something that is incapable of accuracy to sum it up for you?

Is it ok to ask why you dislike the new odyssey? (From seeing the trailer itself, I do agree that itâs not accurate to the myth in some things)
1) calling it inaccurate to the myth is an UNDERSTATEMENT dear anon.
2) Nolan FUNDAMENTALLY misunderstands what the Odyssey is about and why it is such a significant text to greek and western culture as a whole. The slogan of the movie is: One man who defies the gods. THAT IS THE POLAR OPPOSITE OF WHAT THE ODYSSEY IS ABOUT!!!!! THE ODYSSEY AND GREEK MYTHOLOGY AS A WHOLE ARE LESSONS ON WHY YOU SHOULD NEVER DEFY THE GODS! The whole fucking reason why Odysseus is lost for a decade at sea is because he BROKE THE LAWS OF XENIA, the laws of the Zeus. The reason why Telemachus cannot simply throw out the suitors? XENIA! The Odyssey is there to teach the readers about Xenia.
3) no greek actors in sight anywhere. Imagine if Nolan made an adaptation of journey to the west and hired only white actors from the east coast.
4) The movie was filmed in the illegally occupied western Sahara, thus supporting settlements and colonialism
5) the movie looks like ASS. No colours, no interesting settings and everything is drowned in lights. And the costumes look like they are bought from the dollar store and spray painted. The entire movie looks like a 13 year old edgelordâs definition of âcoolnessâ
6) the same way Nolan fundamentally misunderstands the point of the Odyssey, he also fundamentally misunderstands greek culture and history. WHY IS TELEMACHUS WEARING PANTS?!? WHY IS ANYONE WEARING PANTS?! Why does Odysseusâ boat look like a viking ship? Why does the suit of armour look roman???? WHERE IS THE BRONZE?! The COLOUR?! And this is not a âwhoops we were off by a few hundred years in some artistic stylesâ. This is a âWE WERE OFF CENTURIES! Mycenean greece and the Roman Republic are 1200 years apart. 1200 YEARS!! At that point you might as well give Odysseus a jetpack. Itâs like if i made a movie adaptation of Frankenstein, still set in the 1800s, and made Victor wear jeans and sneakers. It is THAT level of inaccurate. Pretty much the only historical accurate part in this movie is one of the suitors gay flirting with Telemachus as a way to assert dominance. Which yeah, is something the greeks did, using homosexuality as a way to dominate other men.
7) WHO THE FUCK THOUGHT IT WAS A GOOD IDEA TO LET AGAMEMNON AURA FARM? Agamemnon! AGA-FUCKING-MEMNON!!!! AURA FARMING?????????
8) Nolan is so preoccupied with being a pretentious fuckass that he lets this get in the way of his own artâs quality.
9) bro took out the whole ânobody blinded meâ scene. You know⊠the story that just so HAPPENS TO BE THE CATACLYSM FOR THE WHOLE STORY!
10) it just fully gets rid of the gods. Poseidon? Never appears. Zeus? Never appears. Again Nolan is a pretentious asshole who tries to turn the Odyssey, again a book about the laws of the gods and why you need to respect them, into an atheist redditors wet dream. And i am saying this as a staunch cold hard atheist myself. Imagine if someone made a movie based on the new testament and just COMPLETELY left out God, the angels, the immaculate conception or that Jesus is the messiah.
11) After Nolan was done shooting the movie, instead of safely getting rid of all the equipment and stage props, HE JUST DUMPED IT ALL INTO THE OCEAN!
12) Zendaya (and I think some of the other actors but Iâm not sure) wore ancient bronze discs that were stolen from an archeological dig and turned into Earrings to the premier of this movie. This whole movie LITERALLY supports art theft and the theft of ancient cultural artefacts by doing this. And as an archeologist specialised in ancient roman and greek history: I AM PISSED!!!!!!!!
I could go on for much much much much longer but these are some of my main points why I hate this movie with the same intensity that AM (from I have no mouth and I must scream) hates humans.
Anyone get the impression that Nolan decided to cast Lupita Nyong'o as Helen solely so valid criticism like this would be lumped in with all of the racist morons screeching their lungs out?
I love that the pandemic actually definitively proved a lot of those "hard" questions for us. Masking up reduced cases of the flu to almost nonexistent numbers and we had zero flu deaths for a time. The welfare and social service and unemployment programs helped keep people living paycheck to paycheck out of poverty, and those stimulus checks some folks keep complaining about actually massively benefitted the common man and the economy. Individual personal travel was so extremely restricted on a global scale that we basically have concrete proof that individual restraint in terms of driving cars or travelling means absolutely nothing by comparison because the mass pollution is coming from the fisheries and the corporations with private jets and container ships. Working from home actually has massive benefits for a company like productivity boosts and better mental health of employees while also saving gas
and we're just. Willingly going back to how everything was before. We were shown how to do things better and the people in charge said "that's nice but we just want to get everything 'back to normal' :)"
weâre not willingly going back to how everything was before. we are being forced back into it by members of the ruling class who found out that making things better for almost everyone else made them feel bad.
Let's not forget about any of these things. Let's reblog and schedule this post to pop in in the future to remind us of what we may have forgotten a little.
Do not forget.
why are dudes in fanfic always getting hit with freight train orgasms. why not an orient express orgasm, classy and romantic. where are the shinkansen train orgasms? his orgasm hit him like the TGV atlantique breaking the passenger rail speed record. like the shanghai maglev, his orgasm was a feat of engineering but something of a commercial disappointment.

For all that the 1800s etiquette guides are--obviously--derangedly sexist from a modern perspective? They're also mindblowing in how casually they will assert things that MODERN DAY CONSERVATIVES would scream and cry and shit their pants about.
"People back then always married young it's natural!!!" Every single 1800s guide I've ever met casually mentions that, of course, you really shouldn't get married before you're at least 20, and waiting until 25 is usually better.
Or, like. Okay here's a long segment:
Just firmly going "it is crazy sexist to blame The Wife for overspending when thirty seconds of asking questions will immediately establish that her husband was outright lying to her about how much money they had. Talk to your wife like a normal person."
Or--okay, here. A section on being honest and not writing love letters in secret, because that's usually a good sign that there's something untoward going on....
....except that he then immediately acknowledges that sometimes, the reason you're hiding this from your parents is that your parents suck. That there are parents who frankly have not earned the right to approve or disapprove of your partner.
(I realize the phrasing there sounds a lot less strong than my summary, but--trust me on this. When you're familiar with the narrative voice of these kinds of books, this passage is downright radical. The mere acknowledgement that if you treat your kids badly, it's your own damn fault when they don't talk to you? I've genuinely never seen that before in this genre. Don't freak out over "properly trained", either. It's just a linguistic shift--at the time, "training" was used the way we would say "raising" a child today. )
"Delete all the nudes and sexts after a breakup or you're a piece of shit" has been the standard expectation since EIGHT. TEEN. EIGHTY. FIVE.
"Men and women being friends with each other is literally normal. Don't be a controlling freak."
Anyway I was wrong the publishing date is actually 1882 so like.
"If you have to abuse a child to keep order in your classroom then you're a bad teacher."
So like @ the modern Republican party, are the "traditional family values" in the fucking room with us right now--
You know, when I've remarked that a lot of the responses to my posts feel like people are just plucking out keywords they think they recognise based on the shape of them and replying to what they imagine the post says based on that, the possibility never occurred to me that this is actually how many American schools are currently teaching kids to read.
Like, my assumption this whole time has been that when folks go "I misunderstood this post that says [thing] as saying [unrelated thing] because I mistook [word] for [completely different word that happens to start with the same letter]", that was a bit. What do you mean they're teaching kids a reading method that's tailored to produce this exact error?
Three cueing. Once you learn about it, a whole lot of very frustrating online discourse with US Americans makes so much sense đ
For decades, schools have taught children the strategies of struggling readers, using a theory about reading that cognitive scientists have
If you were taught to read with the three cueing method, and now struggle to read fluently, you can still learn to read properly!
-> Phonics For Adults <-
If you're a teenager, you can still use this resource.
Next up someone is going to claim that the Narnia series isn't kids books.
Kids books is probably not the best way to word it, you can enjoy them at every age, including your childhood, as you get older you may find new truths in them, but they're still good for any age.
I want you to understand this. I NEED you to understand this. My mother read me the hobbit as bedtime story, and I started pushing myself to read before pre-school so I could in fact read the hobbit for myself instead of having to wait for bedtime.
I didn't do so right away but jesus wept I PUSHED myself to learn to read SPECIFICALLY so I could read The Hobbit! It is, in fact, a children's story! And children only see page count as 'there is a lot of this fun story to read!'
Like... come on man, 310 pages isn't even what I would've considered a particularly long book as a kid.
The Hobbit was the result of JRR Tolkien deciding to codify his bedtime stories for his son after one too many instances of the kid calling out continuity errors when he was winging it.

So I just simultaneously did, and possibly didn't lose my job today :)
Very much did in the sense that I literally do not know where my job is at the moment. But, for the time being I haven't been let go because nobody else including the store owner knows where it is either.
So, I don't wanna risk doxxing myself by posting pictures but goddamn am I tempted because this is not a believable event. This is a cartoon problem. For looneytoons.
But yeah, so, I work(ed?) at a kiosk selling boba tea, right? Freestanding kiosk in the mall with full water and electrical hookups and multiple fridges and sinks and a mini kitchen and the works. Fully functional tea shop. Very important to note that it was there last night, The work chat was discussing another issue last night at closing time. I'll get back to this.
It's been showing signs of being on the way out with how business is being handled lately and I've been considering other options, which is probably why I'm not as torn up about this as I should be, but maybe it just hasn't set in yet, but that's not the point. The point is there's been a lot of shit breaking and not being replaced and nobody mentioning anything about it until I walk into work in the morning and have to figure out why shit like the fucking cash register isn't there today. So I'm kinda used to having to ask questions about big things that nobody bothered to update me on. I was out for two weeks recovering from a surgery, so I came to work this morning assuming there'd be some kind of bullshit, yeah?
So, the question I had to ask the chat this morning was:
Not a text I ever thought I'd have to send in sincerity, but there it is. Because what I found instead was a fenced off patch of discolored tiles and a few holes in the floor where my entire place of employment used to be.
And the answer? Nobody knows! It was there last night when the mall closed, and every single trace of the structure and all its contents including drink making supplies and our safe and cashbox was gone when it opened again. And when I say nobody knows, I mean everyone from last night's closers to the actual (former?) owner of the store jad no fucking clue about this until getting that text from me this morning. For once I am actually the first to know. đ.
So. I guess I didn't so much lose my job as had it stolen. Not by AI, but good old fashioned hands-on human beings picking it up and carrying it away somehow. All mall security would tell me was that they were instructed not to tell me anything and have us contact our management. Who also don't know anything. And later on I came across some construction workers around the gravesite of the kiosk discussing filling in the holes, asked them about it, and was told that they "weren't at liberty to say".
So, not only is my job gone in the most literal physical sense of the word, but it was taken in some kind of super secret kiosk extraction in the dead of night without any warning or witnesses and nobody is allowed to speak of it. The store owner said she was gonna figure it out 10 hours ago and still no word back.
I don't know what else to say aside from I've been laughing all day and I'm gonna have a hell of a time explaining Schrodinger's Unemployment to the benefits office.
Update that is not an update because I'm basically certain this isn't what actually happened:
My mother in law thinks the FBI took it.
Not any of the other stores around the state. Just the one little kiosk.
Why? Because she loves a conspiracy and is just a little bit extra.
Also because she was around for the massive crackdown on Yakuza-owned businesses in Waikiki (in her homestate) that did actually involve the FBI seizing stores (no confirmation of making kiosks cleanly disappear in the middle of the night though).
Still no word from my job on what's actually going on, but the most likely theory so far is that maybe the kiosk was on lease and got repossessed? The mystery continues
(also shout out to the person who proposed Carmen Sandiego)
ACTUAL (partial) UPDATE:
According to the owner, based on what she's been able to find out, the kiosk was not removed legally and they're starting a potentially long process of legal action. I hope she gets to sue the shit out of whoever did it but for now at least I know for sure I'm unemployed.
Really hoping for more details in terms of who/why/how, so I'll keep updating if I learn anything.
For now the summary is: An unnamed entity that is most likely mall management (on account of mall security cooperating with them) stole an entire kiosk and all the contents including money and machinery with barely a trace in the middle of the night grinch-style, with zero warning or explanation, and ensured the silence of both security and the construction crew, in an action that was definitely preplanned and illegal, and as far as I know nobody knows its whereabouts.
So now I'm officially out of a job. Because my workplace was literally stolen in the night.
Actually fuck it let's share some photos cause I wouldn't be inclined to believe this myself. It's not like anyone can stalk me at my job now and I'm not gonna have to see any coworkers that might find my tumblr.
Enjoy the unintentionally funniest text I've ever sent in my life

Thereâs a college in my city that has a rumor that thereâs a secret basement below the known basement that can only be accessed via some hidden stairs scattered around the school or by pressing a secret number sequence in some of the elevators. The staff at the school are super annoyed by this and have no idea where this rumor started.
But I know. I think it was me.
In my defense I never intended to start a rumor. Many years ago I worked as a cleaner at the school and one evening I had to transport one of those big floor washing machines from the basement to the second level via the elevator. When the doors opened a very confused looking man stood inside. He was one of those slicked back gym-bro IT guys and made no movement to get out. The elevator wouldnât fit him, me and the machine so I asked âWhere are you going? Up or down?â
He gave me a smug shit-eating grin and said âDown?â in a mocking tone.
It took me a second to realize that of course he wasnât going down, we were in the basement, but his look and tone annoyed me so much I refused to admit I misspoke and instead said âYeah, down. I donât know if youâre going to the second basementâ
His smile disappeared âThereâs a second basement?â
âYeah but it sounds like you donât have access to it so I guess youâre going up? Iâll just waitâ
I never thought of it as anything other than a funny story to tell about that time I got so annoyed with a guy that I invented an entire second basement, but it turns out he probably refused to believe a cleaner fooled him and the story spread.

Beep boop! I look for accidental haiku posts. Sometimes I mess up.
Thereâs an episode of Sesame Street (on Netflix! you can watch it easily!) where Elmo attends a toy-swap, where you offer up old toys you donât play with anymore and receive someone elseâs toys that are new to you. Cute!
But Elmo, after cheerfully surrendering his old toys, sees that the children who swapped toys with him are playing with his toys âwrongâ! Theyâre imagining entirely different make believe scenarios! Theyâre pretending the football is a dinosaur egg instead of a rocket ship! Aaahhhhh!!!! And this is so distressing to poor Elmo that he does the unthinkable: He does swapsies-backsies and takes all his toys back!
This being Sesame Street, he learns that you canât control how other people play pretend, but you can join in if you want to! And if you donât want to, thatâs ok, you can just play pretend your own way by yourself or with someone else who wants to play that way too. You can still be friends with people who play pretend differently than you (and arenât being mean/harmful/etc, do not bad-faith-read this đ€š).
Anyway this is a post about fandom.
