@making-my-life
legitimately my first feminist awakening as a ten year old child was realizing that girls were expected to respect “boy stuff” but boys were never expected to respect “girl stuff”
my science fair project in fifth grade was basically i had this printout of a bunch of toys that were stereotypically boy toys and girl toys, and i would have my classmates study the sheet for some short period of time, idr if it was like 30 seconds or a minute or whatever, then put it away and had them recall to me as many toys as they could remember. my hypothesis was officially that boys would remember more boy toys and girls would remember more girl toys, but secretly in my head i knew that girls would probably remember boy toys and girl toys relatively equally but boys would still remember mostly boy toys. and that ended up being the case. and i still remember this 20 years later because it hasn’t fucking stopped. and you know what they didn’t even like my project. participation ribbon. i was a fifth grade feminist theorist and no one cared
They're wanting to change the definition of water to see which water would qualify under the Clean Water Act...I wish I was making this up.
What this means, in layman's terms, is that not all water or wetlands would be under environmental protections, so some could legally be dumped in, scraped out of, or otherwise harmed.
The comment period for this is pretty short (just a few days left!) so please submit comments asking for ALL water to be protected.
I talked a lot about wetlands in my comment, because I live in an area with a lot of small ones and each one has unique conditions, and also because I live in an area prone to flooding and wetlands are key in mitigating flooding. If you feel passionately about the water near you, that's the sort of thing lawmakers need to hear.
This is one that really needs comments, guys. It only has 33.
My father passed away last week so in his honor I am paying Tumblr to force strangers to look at a photo of him wearing his “chinmail” (my chain mail necklace I got a ren fair)
So sorry for your loss, from this image alone I can tell he was a fun and kind man who loved you a lot. Hang in there, friend.
Briana Boston faces terrorism charges and CEOs are getting free therapy
Briana Boston is a 42 year old mother of three from Florida who is under house arrest for expressing her frustration at her insurance (which she PAYS for) who denied her claim. She owns ZERO guns and doesn't have a criminal record.
She was originally held in prison for $100,000 bail. They have not dropped the charges and she is under house arrest even after widespread backlash.
They are trying to charge her with terrorism. They want her to spend 15 years in prison.
They are calling her a Luigi Mangione copycat. As if she killed someone. She made a indirect, not at all credible threat.
Meanwhile...
I want every woman who has ever faced threats online, stalking, etc to bring this Briana Boston up at every opportunity. Every time you were told by police that there was nothing they could do, know that they not only CAN do something, but they WILL do something, just not for you.
Me on this stupid app
I wish this was my job.
I mean, “Emily” is a nice enough name for a girl.
There, I just earned $1000.
I've read about her! She mostly works with Chinese parents to pick appropriate sounding English names for their children to use later in life. See, Chinese names do not tend to work well outside of China because of how tonal and unique the phonetics can be and how few international documents allow the symbols. Rather than sign their kids up for either never working or traveling abroad or constantly being disrespected on accident, many parents give them backup English first names in addition to their Chinese first names.
However, the problem arises that Chinese parents do not always know English naming connotations any more than I would know Chinese ones, and there’s a LOT of very deep cultural traditions involved in naming your kids, so they can't just grab a popular baby names list and call it good. So some poor kids get names that were direct English translations of those Chinese naming sensibilities that didn't translate well (a friend of mine in College had to help a tutoring student with name change paperwork so she wouldn't have to go by Lush. My dad knew a guy who narrowly dodged the first name Rolex, but his name ended up Cash, thankfully. That sort of thing) or names that ARE English name's but have... unfortunate connotations (think Karen or Hannibal), or names that are just very outdated (Bertha, Ethyl, Quintin, Norbert, etc.). And without becoming world travellers or investing a shitton of time in learning way more about other cultures than they really need to for daily lifw, your average lower to middle class parents couldn't really guarantee that the names they gave their kids would actually help them, thereby risking continuing the cycle of social stratification and limiting upward mobility.
So this woman learns this, and goes "Oh, I know how to fix this!" And she starts a business where Chinese parents can email her with a list of things that they want their children's names to mean or reflect, auspicious elements they want, etc, and she pools her knowledge of English speaking cultural norms and a bunch of baby name guides to email them a short list of names that meet their needs with little descriptions of each one explaining what it means and how people will think of it, and they can pick a meaningful name in accordance with their cultural traditions that won't screw their kids over later.
Also important to note that in Chinese culture names are incredibly important. Some even believe the name will directly effect a child's growth and success, others name for health etc. Its not what sounds good the combination of characters has to make sense. I remember once a young couple wanted name their baby in relation to water but their choice of characters made them change their mind after a relative said it was a bad name because it phonetically sounded too much like "still born". Most western people with western names do not encounter the "oh what does your name mean?" Because often its based on how a name sounds or named after someone.
Fun little story. My brother was renamed 3 times because he was a sick baby, and it was thought the name had too much of a certain element or too turbulent or too slow. Translated his name use to mean eternal ocean currents. Then it went to eternal streams. Then I settled on eternal waterfall.
My name means eternal prismatic clouds. However its very masculine. When I got very sick the first thing my dad did was attempt to change my name to related to books and poetry more feminine because he thought the masculine energy was making me sick. Which i declined because I told him it had taken me 2 decades to learn to like my name and understand what it means to me. To rename me related to books and poetry felt too confined (to the pages) which was what I felt most of my life until I was an adult, and learned that I had to be malleable, and be able to consciously shift my perspective and to also just relax and mull over things without actually thinking..which is exactly what you do when you are cloud watching or looking for rainbows. Two activities I loved to do but never did because I thought I had to be grounded- not up in the clouds, and only when I allowed myself let my mind wander and play with ideas in a less critical and urgent way...was I happier...and as my mom says "youre much sunnier now...just the way I wanted you to be when you were born"
Also my gramps was also like "do not change her name. Things will be fine. Don't change it will cause more problems. The storm will pass."
If its not apparent there is alot of thematic symbolism in names.
Wow people sure jumped right away to more pessimistic interpretations of what she does. Made it sound really cushy and almost fake but I can imagine it being quite a bit of work to satisfy customers looking for something that important to them. That actually sounds like a degree of pressure I couldn't take.
being a fucking casual is a skill that takes years of honing
you need to have the kind of soul usually reserved for monks to be able to hop on a game you have hundreds of hours on that you've been playing for years, suck ass at it, and not want to jump into the sun or get mad in chat at some 13 year old who downloaded the game last night and is already better than you . there are many others who live like me. join us

Hunger Games didn’t really eat holes in my brain the way that it did for some other people but god the opening lines. The opening lines. Katniss wakes up in bed and immediately, instinctively reaches beside her, only to find the bed empty and cold. Before we even know her name – before we know literally anything about her or this world or her place in that world – we know that she loves someone. We know that she is reaching for where Prim should be, sleeping safe and warm beside her, but Prim is not there. She is not there, and her half of the bed is cold and empty. People talk about characters being “doomed by the narrative” when most of the time the character was literally just a well-foreshadowed death, but Prim WAS doomed by the narrative. It’s the very first thing we learned. It’s the most key, integral, important piece of information we’re given about everything that is about to happen: Every single choice Katniss makes is to protect her little sister, and it isn’t enough. In the end, Prim still dies. Prim was dead before the story even started. Katniss, reaching. Prim’s side of the bed was cold and empty. There is no version of this story where Prim could have been saved. Katniss, reaching. The very first thing she does in the series. She wakes, and she reaches, but Prim is already gone. THAT is how you do Doomed By The Narrative. Edit: Also it is key that there was literally nothing Katniss could have done differently. If she had not acted to save Prim, Prim would not have survived the Hunger Games. But by acting to save Prim, Katniss accidentally kicked off an entire rebellion and ultimately massively increased the amount of danger Prim was actually in. The key is that this is irrelevant. If Katniss had done literally anything differently, Prim still would have died. If Katniss had faltered or changed course at any point, Prim still would have died. There was never a point where Katniss could have changed Prim’s fate. There’s no version of this story where Prim lives to see the end of it. She’s dead before the story begins. That’s doomed by the narrative.
sometimes im worried im in a bubble of compassionate people, but then i go outside of tumblr. when i check in on instagram, take a peek onto twitter, reposted tiktoks, fucking splatoon, apparently also roblox. images and videos of people angry and protesting, and people, including children, saying the most they can with what social media outlet they have.
no matter how much they try, media giants and coorperations can't hide what the masses think. i think my college blocked a donation site to palestine, tumblr is keeping related tags off trending, twitter is doing the same, google searches lead to misinformation and news outlets are cherry-picking, lying, or not reporting at all. world leaders vote and give money to end a people.
but even with they're power, they are few. citizens from all over the world are many. everywhere you look online, millions of people won't let you forget, won't let them forget. even if it's not right outside your window.
i just. i love the human spirit, human compassion and love in the face of human evil.

Monsters.
I’m waiting for an arborist to hop on here and confirm that this is bad for those kind of trees or some shit, too.
Not an arborist but yeah, that removed nearly all of the trees' leaves and created numerous injuries open to infection.
I also heard this might be a crime? in some places tree maintenance is strictly regulated and typically happens during the winter months—not sure how much that applies there, but it might fall under illegal maintenance
Most likely not because Universal Studios basically bought an unincorporated part of LA County called ‘Universal City’ where most of their studio lot is. 30% of their lot falls on Los Angeles city property but the other 70% is unincorporated and they contract city services from the county. I’m guessing their diabolical tree cutting was done on the unincorporated side.
Turns out they were on the 30% side. LETS GO TREE LAW!!!
My new mission in life is to impart this wisdom to as many people as possible
IT'S ALSO USEFUL IF YOU HAVE TMJ DISORDER
in both cases: always start on the lowest setting and wrapped in something soft!! if it hurts, stop!!
But, re: sinuses: look up a diagram of where they are, and when a spot feels particularly good or is particularly congested, hold it there longer. Definitely keep tissues handy for when it drains. Also it can help if your sinuses hurt like fuck but aren't actually congested (which happened when I had covid), but the effect doesn't last long.
Re: TMJ disorder: You can just push it against the joint, obviously; if your vibe has a small contact point you can REALLY dig in there (but again: stop if it hurts). But don't forget the whole area around the joint, around your ears, and up your scalp. There's a lot of muscles that tighten when your jaw is tight/stiff/in pain. Be especially careful when on a spot that's just skin over a bone without a lot of padding.
vibrators can also help if you have restless legs syndrome! Especially ones with fancy pulse patterns. When my RLS is severe I tuck them behind my knees or wherever & can finally lie still & sleep. You might need to wrap them in fabric to avoid skin irritation ymmv. There was even a paper published somewhere called "counter stimulatory devices for RLS" that was hilariously vague about saying the word "vibrator"
Once again adding also useful if you have dystonia or any kind of muscle spasticity. I have cervical dystonia (neck spasms) and dystonia in my left leg that's essentially like persistent Charley horse cramps from my neuromuscular issues and bought a Hitachi expressly for this purpose lol
A vibrator has been recommended to me to unblock clogged milk ducts for anyone that may apply to
I learned about the sinus thing and immediately bought a vibrator for that purpose. And yes, it DOES help with sinus headaches.
I use mine to cum as well
Compared to aliens, humans aren’t any smarter, stronger, or weirder. The only reason the Galactic Council sees us as a threat is because apparently, having disposable thumbs is nigh unheard of.
not to be rude but some of y'all need to look on the bright side sometimes. like, yeah sure the world is fucked and people suck and we all die whatever, sure, but like. go outside.
ok i phrased this poorly, hang on.
i'm not saying the cure for depression is touching grass. however, if you surround yourself with sad things and talk about how terrible life is and how much you're suffering and never take a breath and remember it's not all bad, you'll end up making yourself worse.
like, i've been diagnosed with clinical depression, and anxiety, and insomnia, and chronic pain, and a million other things that get in the way of me having a simple fucking good day, but you know what?
i watch videos that make me happy and wear pretty clothes and cut my hair in fun styles and do my makeup and drink strawberry tea and take two showers a day and i look on the bright side because goddamnit if god is trying to break me down, he'll have to try harder.
i see so many people talk about how sad they are, who make their depression their first priority, and i get it, i really do, but you know that is actively harming your mental state, right? please, just do something nice for yourself, think positively for one day. i promise things get better when you step back and breathe.
