The Gay Kingdom (as it is colloquially known) was founded in 2004 in protest against Australia’s legal stance against same-sex marriage.

They are currently ruled by Emperor Dale I, and their currency is the Pink Dollar.

okay, but not enough people know the details on this. people at pride were upset about gay rights in australia. so they decided to sail 200 miles into the coral sea just ‘cause and put a rainbow flag on a fucking empty island out of spite. and i’m talking empty. no inhabitants. zero. it was a flat piece of land with a bit of dry grass. now it has a camp site and a post office. 

they have a declaration of independence that talks a bit about gay rights and then just flat out copies the “life liberty and the pursuit of happiness” part from the american declaration of independence. and here’s the best part: the founding group actually elected their emperor. he was originally going to be called the “administrator” of a republic. their website, however, says that “upon legal advice, his title was changed to that of Sovereign on the grounds that under Australian law a defacto prince trying to claim his crown cannot be charged with treason”. so they made it a kingdom and he now claims to be a descendent of edward ii.

everything about this is glorious and everyone should know about it.

On May 24th, several hundred protesters stood on the porch of the Kentucky Governor's mansion, many of who were armed with rifles and demanding for him to come outside. This took place for nearly two hours while many beat on the glass windows of his home. The same group later that day hung an effigy of Governor Beshear from a tree. This group was made up primarily of middle-aged white males and they were protesting over COVID-19 restrictions. In response to this protest, they are now building a fence around the Governor's Mansion. ZERO ARRESTS WERE MADE.

On July 14th, 87 protestors sat in the front lawn in front of Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron's house. They were sitting in lines with their hands in their laps. This group was unarmed and made up of mostly young people both white and of color who were demanding justice for Breonna Taylor. Other than his grass no part of the Attorney General's home was touched. ALL 87 WERE ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH A FELONY. They face a sentence of 1-5 years.

I know I told this story before but last year I was having complications with a surgery and I just broke down in a public place and I was trying to gather myself, sitting and leaning on a wall when this girl in cowboy boots approached me and sat down and she asked what was wrong and I told her it was medical issues and she said “I understand, I have to have my foot amputated next week” and it shocked me out of crying and I was like “wow that sucks!” And she said “yeah.” And then she just touched my arm so tenderly and told me “I promise you that this problem will have its place, and everything is going to work out.” And the way she said it just made me really believe her. She said. “We’re just gonna have to cowgirl up.” And then she stood up and walked away and I’d call that a genuine encounter with an angel but the truth is there is a lot of goodness right here on earth in humanity and it’s shining and pure.

THAT REALLY STRUCK ME because I’ve always hated the tired rhetoric of “this happened for a reason” and this feels like a more genuine, comforting take on that. Not “it happened for a reason,” but “this will find its spot in your life and your future that it fits into in a way that will eventually work out even though it sucks that it happened.” Love that.

It’s sad that toxic game culture is so prevalent cuz like. As someone who has ended up in random matches with kids before, I can attest to how fucking easy it is to reverse and un-teach shitty attitudes in kids.

Example: I downloaded Friday the 13th because it’s free on psn. I dunno how to play, so I just enter quick play and I’m matched with 3-4 kids on mic. Immediately on mic they’re shitty and disparaging to each other. They laugh at each others deaths, they actively work against team mates and self sabotage, they call each other “fags”, etc. From the sounds of the voices they cannot be older than 13-14.

I put on my mic and just decide I ain’t havin it. I am nice. I thank them for barricading doors or leaving me items. When they break free from Jason’s grasp I say “good job!” or I try to help them. One kid survived for most of the match by himself. When he dies, I tell him he did a fantastic job.

The mood shift is practically INSTANT. These kids almost immediately stop being dick heads. They start encouraging each other and being kind. After the match all of them try to friend request me. Which should tell you a couple of things:

A) kids want to be kind, and they want to have a nice time playing games. But encounters with adults like me or so rare that they’ve trained themselves to instantly put on a toxic, shitty, defensive veneer when encountering any new person online. It’s literally just THAT EASY to not groom a horrible gaming community, it’s just that NO ONE does it.

B) the speed of which they all tried to friend me was cute, but paints for me such a sad picture? Like these kids are SO desperate to find people to play with who aren’t crappy jerks. They played with me for 10 minutes TOPS and all instantly tried to reach out to me.

tl;dr: The kids are alright. Adults are shit heads.

The thing. The thing about kids. The thing about kids is that they learn a) very quickly and b) CONSTANTLY. Their brains are super flexible and they don’t have decades of experience - the latter meaning they have both fewer preconceptions and less perspective. It makes them both extremely vulnerable and extremely adaptable, and if you, An Adult, deliberately or carelessly use this to encourage them to think the world is a nasty, cynical place…well, then, that’s a self ful-fuckin’-filling prophecy, innit?

Because that kid, in the short term, is gonna feel bad, and they’re a person, and making people feel bad cos you can’t be bothered not to is Evil. And that kid, in the long term, has that much more likelihood of being nasty and cynical, and passing that on to other people, and so on and so forth.

Be good to kids, whether you like them or not, both because it is the right thing to do, and because it will cut down on the number of assholes you have to put up with when you’re old.

Let me be honest, I hate kids. I despise the literal idea of kids anywhere because they're just plain exhausting to me.

But they're easily influenced by everything around them. They're interested in everything. They can't help it, it's the way they are programmed because that's how you grow up. So I always make a point to be nice to them anyways. Yes I hate children, but I'm not about to teach them that the world is shitty and everything sucks and shit on everything they love, because I think about what kind of adult will stem from such an experience, and we already have enough fucked up, bitter adults. So if a kid asks me a thousand questions, I'll answer them. If they want me to give them the hundredth piggyback of the evening, I'll give it to them. If they walk up showing me the fiftieth doll or car or Lego toy, I'll look at it and act amazed and pretend being on the phone if they hand me a plastic phone. And if I really can't be bothered anymore, I'll kindly ask them to play with another kid or adult and explain that I'm very tired or that I'd like to go chat with someone, and if they don't wanna let me go I'll kindly teach them about accepting other people's needs. Without getting visibly annoyed. (even though I am. Almost every time.)

Because I don't fucking trust people who treat kids like shit just because they don't like kids. That's your problem, not theirs, and you don't need to crush their innocent happiness over it.
