One of the most warmly human things Iâve ever seen was an old parchment from the Irish middle ages, the scribeâs cat had walked across the page and left inky pawprints on the page.Â
FOUND IT!!!
Oh, hereâs another:
It would appear that Asian scribes were also plagued by feline predations:
writing tip #3208:
every good story should have a minimum of two himbos. there is no maximum. make them all himbos if you want to. in fact, you could make a career out of writing himbos being thrown into situations
lol I am in such a stressed-out blind rage today from insurance bullshit that I wrote up a glossary of health insurance terms (things like deductibles, premiums, and copays) because all the free guides online are unnecessarily complicated and the only way you can squeeze a dime out of these bullshit companies is to understand their overly-complicated policies. give em hell
This is a GREAT guide folks - itâs simple, straightforward, and deals well with the overly complicated alphabet soup of medical insurance. Knowing this stuff can prove REALLY helpful, and the examples used are a great resource.Â

Why do Protestants and Catholics hate each other and try to kill each other in Ireland?
Itâs a common misconception that The Troubles (the conflict/war in Northern Ireland from the 1960s-1998) was about religious hatred between Catholics and Protestants.
It was actually not about religion. It was about colonialism.
To understand, you need to know a little about Irish history.
Starting from the 1500s, the British began a program of systematic, intense colonisation of Ireland. Native Irish people were driven off their land, which was then settled by British people. The northern part of the island was particularly heavily settled, to the point that about half the population was made up of British settlers.
At the time, the vast majority of British people (and therefore the British settlers) were Protestant, while the vast majority of Irish people were Catholic.
As the centuries passed, the native Irish population and the descendants of the British settlers did not integrate. They lived largely separatelyâŠ. attending separate schools, living in separate communities⊠and worshiping separate religions.
Religion became one of a handful of âmarkersâ (along with language, cultural practices, etc) to identify whether someone was a native Irish person, or a descendent of the British settlers.
Laws were established that systematically discriminated against Catholics (who were mostly Irish) in favour of Protestants (who were mostly descendants of British settlers). These were in effect in Northern Ireland until the latter part of the 1900s. They meant that Irish Catholic people were denied equal access to education, housing/land ownership, and political representation. This was known as the Protestant Ascendency.
In the 1960s, a Civil Rights Movement began in Northern Ireland. It was inspired by the African American movement in the US. Irish people marched and held protests for their rights. This Civil Rights Movement came to an end when British soldiers fired live ammunition into a peaceful protest in Derry, an event known as Bloody Sunday.
Following Bloody Sunday, tensions between the two main groups in Northern Ireland (Irish people/âCatholicsâ, and the descendants of British settlers/âProtestantsâ) escalated dramatically and the region descended into violence. The Troubles had begun.
Of course, when the British press was reporting on the sudden civil war that had erupted in one of their territories (Northern Ireland) they glossed over the fact that⊠you know⊠they caused it, by colonising Ireland, displacing itâs population and then systematically oppressing the Irish for centuries.
Colonial powers donât really like to acknowledge the effects of their colonialism.
So instead, the British media simplified the situation by calling it a religious conflict between Catholics and Protestants. And other countries, who donât know any better, caught on and also portrayed it as a conflict between Catholics and Protestants.
But in reality, religion was not the root cause of the conflict- it was colonialism.
another dimension of the exclusion and colonialism in northern ireland was in employment practices at the harlan & wolff shipyards, which used to be the biggest industrial employer in the biggest city in northern ireland - you basically had to be a protestant to work there, except as a glorified janitor. in the âgood old daysâ before thatcherite deindustrialization, this meant that catholics were effectively barred from good jobs, and were forced into precarious, unskilled, poorly-paid positions. if you think this sounds a lot like the dynamics between white and black auto workers in detroit, youâre right.
another dimension of this is that the current UK government has promised to make it illegal to bring âvexatiousâ lawsuits against the British Army, which has been interpreted by some as a sneaky move to avoid bringing the war criminals of Bloody Sunday to justice
Imagine being famous celebrity Kamilah al Jamil, dying and going to the afterlife, walking into the office of the Architect(s) of your entire afterlife experience, and seeing a framed photo of your long-dead, way less successful sister in said Architectâs office because she and her rando friends reformed the entire afterlife system and are directly responsible for you and everyone else not being tortured by chainsaw bears forever. How do you even react to that?
Kamilah: *wakes up in the afterlife*
Literally everyone: oh wow, arenât you Tahaniâs sister???
Lots of my favorite vines are old ones, so here are some that I didnât want lost to the wind

for chinese new year they get all these famous actors and comedians together and they do a lil show and one of the comedians was like âi was in a hotel in america once and there was a mouse in my room so i called reception except i forgot the english word for mouse so instead i said âyou know tom and jerry? jerry is hereâ
jerry is here
my chinese teacher once shared this story in class about someone who went to the grocery to buy chicken, but they forgot the english word for it, so they grabbed an egg, went to the nearest sales lady and said âwhereâs the motherâ
When I was a teenager, we went to Italy for the summer holidays. We are German, neither of us speaks more than a few words of Italian. That didnât keep my family from always referring to me when they wanted something translated because âYouâre so good with languages and you took Latinâ. (I told them a hundred times I couldnât order ice cream in Latin, they ignored that.) Anyway, my dad really loved a certain cheese there, made from sheepâs milk. He knew the Italian word for âcheeseâ â formaggio â and he knew how to say âpleaseâ. And he had already spotted a little shop that sold the cheese. He asked me what âsheepâ was in Italian, and of course, I had no idea. So he just shrugged and said âIâll manageâ and went into the shop. 5 mins later, he comes out with a little bag, obviously very pleased with himself. How did he manage it? He had gone in and said â'Baaaahâ formaggio, prego.â
I was done for the day.
This makes me feel better about every conversation I had in both Rome and Ghent.
I once lost my husband in the ruins of a French castle on a mountain, and trotted around looking for him in increasing desperation. âHave you seen my husband?â I asked some French people, having forgotten all descriptive words. âHe is small, and English. His hair is the color of bread.â
I did not find my husband in this way.
In rural France it is apparently Known that one brings oneâs own shopping bags to the grocery store. I was a visitor and had not been briefed and had no shopping bag. I saw that other people were able to conduct negotiations to purchase shopping bags, but I could not remember the word for âbag.â
âCan I have a box that is not a box,â I said.
The checkout lady looked extremely tired and said, âUn sac?â (A sack?)
Of course. A fucking sack. And so I did get a sack.
I once was at a German-American Church youth camp for two weeks and predictably, we spoke a whole lot of English.Â
When I phoned my mom during week two I tried to tell her that it was a bit cold in the sleeping bag at night. I stumbled around the word in German because for the love of god, I could remember the Germwn word for sleeping bag.
âYeah so, itâs like a bag you sleep in at night?â
âAnd my mother must probably have thought I lost my mind. She just sighed and was like âSo, a Schlafsack, yes?â
Which is LITERALLY Sleeping sac ⊠The German word is a basically a one on one translation of the English word and I just⊠I failed it. At my mother tongue. BIG
My former boss is Italian and she ended up working in a lab where the common language was English. She once saw an insect running through the lab and she went to tell her colleagues. She remembered it was the name of a famous English band so she barged in the office yelling there was a rolling stone in the labâŠ
Iâm Spanish and have been living in the UK for a while now. I recently changed jobs and moved to a new office which is lost somewhere in the Midlandsâ countryside. Itâs a pretty quaint location, surrounded by forest on pretty much all sides, and with nice grounds⊠full of pheasants. I was pretty shocked when I drove in and saw a fucking pheasant strolling across the road. Calm as you please.
That afternoon I met up with some friends and was talking about the new job, and the new office, and for the life of me I couldnât remember the English word for pheasants. So I basically ended up bragging to my friends about âthe very fancy chickensâ we had outside the office.
Best thing is, everyone understood what I meant.
I love those stories so muchâŠ
Picture a Jewish American girl whose grasp of the Hebrew language comes from 10+ years of immersion in Biblical and liturgical Hebrew, not the modern language. Some words are identical, while others have significantly evolved.
She gets to Israel and is riding a bus for the very first time.
American:Â ŚŚŚ ŚŚŚŚ ŚŚ? (âHow much money?â but in rather archaic language)
Bus Driver:Â Ś©ŚȘŚ ŚŚŚŚŚ. (âTwo zuzimâ â a currency thatâs been out of circulation for millenia)
thatâs hilarious
I am officially screamlaughing at my desk from that last one OH MYÂ
Does everyone know the prime minister who promised to fuck the country?
So in Biblical Hebrew the word for penis and weapon are the same. There is a verb meaning to arm, which modern Hebrew semanticly drifted into âfuckâ: i.e. give someone your dick.
The minister was making a speech while a candidate, bemoning the state of the world. âThe Soviet Union is fucking Egypt. Germany is fucking Syria. The Americans are fucking everyone. But who is fucking us? When I am prime minister, I will ensure we are fucked!â
What the hell Biblical Hebrew.
Just guessing: The path from something like âgive someone a bladeâ to âgive someone a blade, if you know what I mean ;)â is probably not that difficult or unlikely.
^Given that the Latin word for sheath (like, for a sword) is literally âvaginaâ, I can verify that this metaphor is a time-honored one.Â
Oh yeah and one time my Latin professor was at this conference in Greece and his flight was canceled, so he needed to extend his hotel stay by one more night.
Except he doesnât speak a lick of modern Greek, and the receptionist couldnât speak English. Â Or French. Â Or German. Â Or Italian. Â (He tried all of them.)
Finally, in a fit of inspiration, he went upstairs and got his copy of Medea in the original Greek (you know, the stuff separated from modern Greek by two and a half thousand years). Â He found the passage where Medea begs Jason to let her stay for one more day, went downstairs, and read it to the receptionist.
She laughed her head off, but she gave him the extra night. Â
All of these *chefâs kiss* but the Medea one is hands down the best
s/o to my classics professor who managed to get a tire changed on his rental car while doing research in Greece by telling them his chariot had broken down
I was once in the Italian equivalent of Costco and could not find hide nor hair of some vegetarian meatballs that we had bought there before. I didnât know the Italian word for vegetarian, but I DID know the words for âlieâ and âmeat.â
I will have what she is having
She enunicated this SO PERFECTLY and completely in a single tweet. A whole informed essay in a single tweet. Your fave could never!
Same problem we have with cops. Police are more likely to have certain characteristics and personality flaws not because becoming a cop makes you that way, although that may amplify the effects, but rather, men with these problems gravitate to the position. Thatâs why so many bullies end up becoming cops
You pointing out the cops means I need to point out; Female bullies tend to go into nursing! A position that puts them in power, and gives them control over people. If you knew a girl in highschool who was just an awful human being but thought she was great? Chances are she went into nursing.
It's not only threatening the profession, it's putting patients' lives at risk.
That addition to this post made me look up one of my worst bullies from school and GUESS WHAT

vegans who refuse to even eat backyard eggsâŠ.why
people who think its unethical to eat chicken eggs are like people who think bees should keep all their honey. they literally produce more than they need and your unwillingness to even buy local means you are doing nothing to help them, support your small farmers you heathens
This is not true.
1) honeybees do not produce âextra honey.â And beekeepers donât take some of the honey, they take all of it.
2) chickens have been artificially selected from naturally producing eggs once a month to producing eggs every couple of days. Their bodies are not sustainable and the health complications of this rapid egg production kills chickens.
Hey idk who like. Lied to you about the way honey farms work, but could you stop spreading misinformation? Are you a beekeeper?
Because I am!
Beekeepers make sure hives are fed before there is pollen in the air, protected from predators and the elements, and have enough honey to sustain themselves. We donât take all of it.
But overproduction of honey leads to stagnation in the hive. It puts stress on the queen to lay eggs, and when they inevitably fill up all their space with honey (instead of filling up the multiple empty, clean boxes of frames beekeepers might put on top of the main hive box), the queen can get so stressed she dies. If thereâs a spike in the weather and the hive hasnât prepared new queen brood, thatâs it! The colony is dead. Because there wasnât enough space for eggs and honey in the hive.
Beekeepers take excess honey. We are constantly monitoring the state of the hive, checking for parasites, analyzing the eggs for diseases, and making sure they are fed and healthy (usually with sugar water and pollen substitutes until they have made enough honey to sustain themselves in the early spring months). If a queen dies prematurely, we make every attempt to replace her to save the colony.
I know thereâs an urge to patronize everyone who works in the farming industry, but try to understand the differences between small scale agriculture and industrial farming. There IS a difference. And stop spreading misinformation.
If youâre this passionate about ethical consumption, look into some of the ecofeminist research on non-hierarchal interspecies relationships (working on building animal-human relationships in a non exploitative way).
But yeah! Stop spreading misinformation! Please đ
Also if I can harp on the chicken part?
Yea Chickens are some of the most abused animals on big factory farms and Iâll be the first to admit itâs criminal and more needs to be done to regulate this.
Yes selective breeding over time has caused an increase in the ammount of eggs produced by chickens and factory farms have some messed up practices to get more eggs from them including forced moutling.
THIS IS WHY YOU SUPPORT LOCAL FARMERS AND THEIR EGGS
Many people take to raising their own hens because of Americaâs immoral treatment of hens in factory farms like youâre not helping the poor chicks by starving these farmers financially youâre just hurting the one people trying to change things and making the OPTION of cage free organic cruelty free eggs even harder to find
First of all, chickens didnât ever âlay one egg a monthâ because theyâre clutch layers. Not only that, but many chicken folk are raising heritage breeds, not commercial hens,. Your average commercial production hen (leghorns, Isa browns, etc) produce 5-6 eggs per week, laying an egg a day (which is actually how junglefowl, ie wild chickens, lay. The difference is that jungle fowl lay their clutch and then brood). Heritage breeds often donât because they havenât been bred for egg production, theyâve been bred out of a sense of heritage. Older breeds our ancestors around the world kept for various reasons. Often these breeds are the ones that lay 3-4 eggs in a week instead of daily, which is less often than wild fowl when itâs laying season. In addition, several heritage breeds are being kept for conservation reasons, as the breeds were nearly lost.
And backyard hens are often spoiled pets. They get fed rich, hearty, varied diets. Usually a staple chow and then extras like leafy greens, bugs, fruits, veggies. Often they get table scraps. Iâve seen countless people make warm oatmeal on cold mornings to give to Their Ladies. They make them chicken sweaters, and aprons, and diapers so they can visit inside the house for snuggles. Enrichment is increasing for them every day. Most people allow their birds to free range during the day when itâs nice out. They give them names.
They also lay eggs, often infertile ones but even the fertile ones arenât âbabiesâ like youâre thinking. They are absolutely inert without incubation for over 24 hours straight because chickens lay a clutch of 8-15 eggs and need them to hatch at all the same time so they donât start incubation until the hen stops laying and sits on them. Brooding is just as hard if not harder on them than laying is, because they stop eating and drinking except once a day, and hold in their poop so they only poop once a day instead of eliminating waste every 15 minutes or so like they would normally. This can cause them to lose a lot of weight and some birds will sit on eggs until it seriously threatens their health. So normally you donât WANT them to brood if you can prevent it, unless you know they have fertile eggs AND you want babies or know how youâre going to re-home them. Itâs also not possible to safely fix a bird; anesthesia is an extremely dangerous risk that often leads to death and no vet in their right mind would risk it just so you can prevent a chicken hen from laying eggs.
IN SUMMARY: The eggs they naturally produce by existing and being well cared for are edible, nutritious, and taste good, you cannot safely prevent them from laying them, and leaving the eggs in with them can lead to negative health consequences.
So what would you have someone do? Throw away food just because your pet produced it instead of the dirt? Thatâs illogical and wasteful.
Like, if you just donât want to eat eggs, then donât. I donât particularly like eggs either! I keep chickens as pets, and they produce a bunch of eggs I donât eat, so I sell them or give them to other people. BUT if youâre not eating eggs from backyard chickens because of some misguided idea that itâs cruel, youâre just wrong, and you should stop spreading that lie.
