Emily Wilson has inadvertently created a fascinating new way to categorize basically any visual media ever made
The new Odyssey adaptation has inevitably gotten people talking about a Muppet version of it, and theyâre frequently suggesting Kermit as Odysseus, Miss Piggy as Penelope.
Iâm sorry but thatâs thinking way too small, hear me out:
We need to have Miss Piggy as Odysseus, and Kermit as Penelope.
Think about it⌠whoâs the more fickle, prideful, warlike one in that relationship? Who is absolutely ready to go ham, at a momentâs notice?
It ainât Kermit
Miss Piggy tied to the mast while Statler and Waldorf heckle her from the sea
But who is the single human cast member in this tale? Who gets to put in an Oscar-worthy performance alongside the Muppets and what role are they to play?
Thereâs no single human, everyone is a Muppet except for one scene. Circe, played by Janice, turns Odysseusâs crew into humans who still behave animalistic and are all played by Academy Award winning actors.
Just in time for Moon Day Monday, I finished my quilt!
I learned many things on this one, including:
- nesting your seams is a thing and it really helps with nice aligned corners, who knew??
- inset circles. Now I fear nothing, including God
- how to use the long arm with a pantograph
- the easy way to change thread on the long arm because the inner blocks were too light for the medium grey thread I was using
- how to stress out my grandfather stopping at various points on the pantograph because I wanted to do something different in the moons and finally
- fun things about free motion quilting, so I could put the correct textures of our beautiful lady into the different phases on the blocks.
The pattern is a mish mash of the Moon Portal quilt pattern by The Water Spirit and the Plaid-ish 2 from Erica Jackman of Kitchen Table quilting, plus some cathedral window blocks for the stars in various sizes.
sewing affirmations
itâs okay that i donât have a sewing machine
i love backstitching by hand for hours
this has got to be great for my back
millions of my ancestors did this and they lived almost as long as i want to
iâm making so many beautiful things for my houseâoh goddamn it
âthe horrorsâ is such a good phrase for when anyone experiences anything. going to work? thats the horrors. thinking about a really awful time of your life? the horrors. waking up before youre supposed to and not being able to fall back asleep? also the horrors
i really do love âthey put their whole pussy into thisâ because that really is the only way to describe things sometimes. there really are things out there that are so good it is clear that they were putting their whole pussy into it during the creation process. like art. and strawberry lemonade. many such cases
let your imagery be a little violent let your imagery be a little weird let your imagery be a little sexual and by god let it be sacrilegious. at this point if someone looks at it weird im just going to assume theyve got the art-consuming palette of a four year old. stop making artistic chicken nuggets when you could be cooking an actual meal just because some people cant handle the flavor doesnt mean it shouldnt exist. damn
its finally happened⌠i speak the voice of my muse

reasons why people donât comment on fics
an incomplete list based on observations via this blog
enjoyed the fic but didnât have anything to say
worried that a general âI love this!â wasnât a good enough comment
not a native speaker of the authorâs language
so overcome by emotions after reading that words were impossible
reading on a device where commenting is difficult
intended to come back later and didnât
intends to come back later and hasnât yet
doesnât have an AO3 account (+ doesnât know about the guest option or isnât comfortable using it)
was going to say something but another reader already commented it
not enough mental/emotional energy to try to craft a âgood enoughâ comment
worry about bothering the author
shy / social anxiety
reading fic before bed and fall asleep
reading fic while sick and in a haze
interrupted while reading the fic and thought they finished it/commented but whoops!
didnât like the fic / didnât finish reading
Just to be clear, this was in no way meant to be a call-out post on readers. It was intended to explain to writers that there are dozens of reasons why people donât/canât comment. Writers tend to assume commenting is a binary: if you like the fic, you comment and if you donât, you donât. I wanted to show that thereâs a lot more to it than that.Â
i love the whole world violently. and i dont want to go to work
I will never get over how weird it feels to have tragic and emotional chapters of your life where you just also still go to work, and the grocery store, and see funny videos online all while feeling such paralyzing fear and heartache
life just goes on no matter what
idk who needs to hear this but,,,every piece of fandom content you make should be self indulgent. you should be creating because it gives you happiness and nothing less. you aren't a machine meant to only give to other people. the enjoyment should always come before the validation.
I don't know who needs to hear this, but you're not selfish. If you say no to someone it doesn't make you selfish. If you do something for yourself it's not selfish. If you choose yourself over other people it's not fucking selfish. You deserve to be a priority in your own life ... don't let people call you selfish just because you no longer serve their demands.
at least thereâs fucking friends. at least thereâs people who love you in this godforsaken world
Reminders for the Anxious/Depressed Creatives
Youâre more than what you make.
Your productivity does not determine your value.
Itâs okay to do nothing sometimes.
Not everything you do has to result in a product.
Not everything you make has to be important, significant, or even good.
You can make things just for yourself.
You can keep secrets for yourself, whether itâs not posting some of your projects or not sharing your techniques.
Youâre allowed to say no.
Youâre allowed to rest.
2023 Updates:
Inspiration doesnât cure burnout. Rest cures burnout.
People will wait for you; take your time and come back when you are ready.
Itâs okay to scrap projects that no longer excite you, even if other people like them.
Itâs delightful and excellent to be openly proud of your work.
Afford yourself the same gentleness that you would afford another creative - negative self-talk is counterproductive and frankly cruel.
Self-indulgent creations are satisfying to others as well; donât apologize for your own pleasure.
Actually, donât apologize for your work at all.
