Of course I'm pro nouns i love people places and things
All of the "Pro-lifers" that are celebrating right now I sincerely hope you or your daughters never have a Miscarriage that they cannot naturally pass, because a D&C is an abortion.
I hope you don't have a ectopic pregnancy, because the procedure that will save your life is an abortion.
I hope you don't have a still born baby that your body can't naturally pass because that induction is an abortion.
I hope you are never in a place where carrying a baby full term would mean your death (as mine would, my doctor looked me in the eyes and told me if I get pregnant again I WILL NOT MAKE IT, and fuck you all because my kids need a mom more than they need a sibling.)
I hope you don't find out your baby has a condition that will mean being alive for how ever long will cause them excruciating pain, that you don't have to birth your baby and watch them die a horrific, painful death in your arms.
I hope you aren't raped and forced to carry that baby to term no matter the detriment to your mental/physical health.
I hope you aren't forced to give birth to your abusers child, giving you no way out of the relationship.
I hope your 10 year old is never assaulted and have to carry a baby to term that will almost definitely will kill her.
I hope that you don't go to jail when they investigate your miscarriage and determine that something you did made it YOUR FAULT.
I hope you realize you and your daughters will die from laws you created.
I hope you realize the consequences of your actions because you may have to suffer through them.
Everyone talking about the “ayo, good morning” but what about the “you must take the A train”
Like
I swear I start squealing every time I hear that
That’s the best line in the song because it’s a reference to the jazz standard “Take the A train” by Billy Strayhorn!
take 1 bite of this to see the hat man
You know it’s good when you get the jazz sweats

The Itsy Bitsy Spider is the Sisyphus myth for kids
*to the tune of the Itsy Bitsy Spider*
Sisyphus the Greek man rolled a rock up hill all day
When it reached the top, the rock would never stay
The rock would then go rolling and tumble to the floor
Poor Sisyphus would then go and roll it up once more
shit I missed my window, next week I guess

I don’t like Lin Manuel Miranda’s hubris in trying to cast himself in everything he writes, but the man is a genius.
I say this after finally knuckling down and finding translations for the Spanish in “Breathe” from In The Heights. For those of you unfamiliar with the structure, the song is almost a duet with Nina, a college student who’s recently had to drop out of Stanford due to trying to go to Stanford and work at the same time, and the chorus, her neighborhood of low-income Spanish speakers. Everyone is speaking Spanish, except for Nina.
Which is where things get interesting.
My Spanish is not great, but I was able to pick up on a few key words. “Mira” is “look.” “Te adoro” and “te quiero” both mean “I love you” with varying degrees of intensity. “Respira” means “breathe.” For months, I figured I had the basic gist. Nina even translates what they’re saying at one point, and the translation sounded right.
It’s important to note that Nina is extremely frustrated with herself and sad in this song. She’s really worried about what her neighborhood is going to think of her dropping out. Some of the best lines to illustrate this come at the beginning of the song:
Hey, guys, it’s me
The biggest disappointment you know.
The kid couldn’t hack it
She’s back and she’s walkin’ real slow
Welcome home, just breathe.
To say she’s down on herself is an understatement.
This brings me back to the translation part of the song. Nina tells us that the neighborhood is saying:
They’re not worried about me.
They are all counting on me to succeed.
I am the one who made it out.
Only the first line is a truly accurate translation. What the neighborhood actually says is:
No me preocupo por ella.
Mira, allí esta nuestra estrella.
Ella sí da la talla.
Which actually translates to:
I’m not worried about her.
Look, there’s our star.
She’s definitely good enough.
This is a much more positive message than what Nina translates. Nina translates their words as filled with pressure and taking on an almost accusatory tone. Their actual words are a lot prouder and less condemnatory. Would she still be “nuestra estrella” if she told them what happened? Maybe. She hasn’t really given anyone the chance to say anything. She assumes the worst and that assumption worms its way into her translation of their words.
Add to this that a common refrain for the chorus throughout the song is “respira” or “breathe.” In addition to being the title of the song, it’s also what people commonly say when they want to help someone who’s freaking out or panicking. You tell them to breathe or take deep breaths. “Breathe” is definitely what you’d say to your nervous over-achiever who’s having an anxiety attack on the street if you care about them. “Breathe. I’m not worried about you. You’re our star. You’re good enough. Breathe.”
If you just have the English and Nina’s translations, it seems like Nina is right. The tone they sing in could mean any number of things, and they do seem to have her on a pedestal. It’s only when you know Spanish (or look up the Spanish) that you realize the neighborhood is encouraging her and just seems glad to see her again. That the pressure is coming largely from Nina and her assumptions about how people will think of her.
That is the beauty of the song. Your average person listening to this is going to think this is a song about pressure from the community and self-doubt. The careful listener sees that it’s about self-pressure and how our expectations for ourselves often warp our reality to the point where “You’re good enough” sounds like “You are all counting on me to succeed.”
This is a really in-depth analysis. It’s spot on about how self doubt changes your perspective on success and your expectations of achievement. This is the reason why it was the sound track to my mental breakdown last year.
Woah damn same thing happened to me
HI LET’S SHARE NICOLE’S WORDS ON THE SUBJECT!
It has been literal years but every time I see Martin’s tweets posted somewhere and his word is shared as truth while her post is not shared it sort of reiterates the fact that we trust men to speak about feminism more than we believe women who experience it.
Interesting, innit? https://medium.com/@nickyknacks/working-while-female-59a5de3ad266
Reading her account of how their boss treated her blows me away. Men are so emboldened that they will literally admit to illegal discrimination casually and face no consequences.
In all the years of seeing this post I’ve never seen a link to her side. Didn’t even know she’d written one.
Adding screenshots of her post. His whole post is there without needing a link. Hers should be, too.
Also, she posted this is 2017! It’s fucking 2020 and I’ve seen his side of this for years, but it took 3 years for her side to make its way to my dash…
I’ve reblogged his story at least twice; it’s time for Nicole’s.

Honestly all the conversations between the Daleks and Cybermen in this episode were fucking gold
I know nothing about Doctor Who lore but I feel like the Cybermen and the Daleks are both the descendents of two exes who both designed robots.
