5 things your character can't do while speaking
Choke. Just think about it, seriously. Think about whatĀ chokingĀ is and imagine speaking while itās happening. That would fuckinā hurt, man.
Hiss.Ā Look, itās just not possible, okay? No matter how āevilā you want your character to seem.
Snarl. Animals snarls. The Beast from Beauty and the BeastĀ snarls. The Hulk snarls. You know who doesnāt snarl? PEOPLE WHEN THEYāRE SPEAKING.
Shriek.Ā Come on, 99% of the time, āshriekā is not the word you want.Letās face it: if you put an exclamation point at the end of the sentence, your reader gets the picture. Donāt bring to mind banshees and screaming toddlers.
Sneer. Iām not even going to bother explaining this one. āSNEERā ISNāT EVEN A SOUND.
Choked is not meant to be taken literally, an obstruction in the throat. It means theyāre having difficultly speaking, theyāre forcing the words out with difficulty. Often used when the character is convulsed in tears or laughter.
Hiss is a low, threatening whisper. Raw, guttural, vicious. It is NOT a literal hiss like an animal, it is a tone of voice that serves the same function. Someone will hiss that theyāre going to cut your throat- a message from one person to the other.
Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, itās a tone of voice that serves the same function. Itās raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. Itās loud, itās showy, itās intimidating. Itās very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. Iāll take ALL of you on. Even if theyāre snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or theyāre gonna get fucked up too.
Shriek. Come on, seriously? Weāve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but itās funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.
Sneering is contempt whether itās a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.
How descriptive words work 101
Op radiating cinema sins energy with that list lol
OP tagging this as āreasons they stop reading a book in ch 1ā yet not grasping like the most basic form of figurative language is⦠something
What I love about Tumbr is that (if Iām looking at dates and the blog description correctly), OP is currently in their thirties but was a literal child when they wrote this. And if Iād reblogged this and made fun of them when they first posted it, Iād feel bad.
But since OP is now an adult and apparently abandoned their Tumblr like nine years ago and will likely never read my reply⦠I can be like haha, get fucked! You suck at words!
When I was still being published by someone other than myself, I used to have to fight tooth and nail against CinemaSins-poisoned editors and publishersā house style who insisted on the same list as the OP. Literally theyād fight me on āhissā if there wasnāt a sibilant. Iād say āit denotes a harsh whisper.ā theyād say āso change it to whispered harshly.ā
And that is what I remind myself of whenever I think of going trad published again.
Literally nobody:
Sabrina The Teenage Witch's Salem the Cat: I'm gonna force feminize Archie.
favourite rpg trope is the merchants in incredibly hostile environments. we are at the evil curse mountain and youre just selling me items normal style
Essential worker during covid
I cannot stop laughing at the idea that socialism ignores humanityās highest spiritual ideal: owning yachts.
this tiktok screenshot ruined my life i need to see the serbian pigeon movie so so badly but it doesn't exist it's so foul to make this bad of a point with something so cool and then take it away from me.
Tiktok marvel fans really will be out here like "movie fan SHOCKED because i'd rather watch superhero movie #54 in blue and not a sensual 1987 french horror film about a man discovering his wife may not exist set in what is gradually revealed to be a space station" as if you're supposed to agree that superhero movie #54 is the clear winner in this comparison
Love the idea of a story about a complex issue that's told from the perspective of something that cannot comprehend or care about the issue. The way the story would be sliced up and moments that a human would consider pointless would be focused on because the pigeon happened to be there would be hype as fuck
Ok FINE I made the movie poster of it
MaliÅ”a, otherwise known as Little One, is a pet pigeon owned by a conservative butler of the Austro-Hungarian aristocracy. She is loved, and she is pamperedā until her owner is murdered in cold blood, and she is left to fend for herself in Sarajevo.
In the wilds of the city, she feeds from the poor, working nationalist radicals, and the vieux riches alike.
To MaliŔa, there are no ethical concerns. No politics. No burgeoning nationalism.
There are only hands that feed her, and hands that do not.
This is compelling. Consider me fucking compelled.
Final shot is the bird hearing, but not seeing, the sound of a .32 ACP pistol, and flying away in shock
"From the studio that brought you Goncharov...."
yeah okay ill reblog that
āthere are only the hands that feed her, and those that do notā yeah-
important reminder that most people you follow online are significantly lamer than you think they are including me. and if you feel insecure comparing yourself to someone online: DON'T. theyre probably also lame and weird. most people on the internet are
reblog if you're also lame and weird.
The most basic, intractable fact about mental illnesses is that you simply cannot willpower your way out of them. The only exceptions to this rule are the ones I have, which continue to disable me due to lack of determination and other grave personal flaws
I love environmental storytelling
Its fucking hieroglyphs with you people
the issue with growing up in the 2000s and 2010s was like there was this really big push toward "accepting your weirdness" overall but they meant like idk wearing mismatched socks or something not being tangibly beyond the norm in any way shape or form
Bruce: I don't matter. Only the mission matters. I am not worthy of being loved or protected.
All of the batkids: *watching him with the same self worth issues, all mini versions of himself.
Bruce: Oh goddamit. I've got to heal by example. Damn-
Batman doing daily affirmations through gritted teeth: I matter as a person and love myself >:(
Dick: You sound so mad about that
Bruce, glaring at himself in the mirror: healing is undignified
There's something about Bruce Wayne dragging himself through his healing journey, kicking and screaming just to show his many beautiful children it's possible
Hi, its me. The warmest creature in the world. I love you. Im the warmest creature in the world and I love you so much and I need to be in your lap right now. Yes, I know about the heat wave. That's okay though because I was already the warmest creature in the world so I don't mind. I love you and you need to let me sleep in your lap right now. I'm soooo warm and I love you sooo much. If you say no you'll be saying no to a thing that love you. Let me sleep in your lap. When I fall asleep I get warmer. I love you
apparently iām a millennial woman
I mean, yeah, valid! but but but I also want to add on the fact that lotr AGGRESSIVELY rejects the āgrimdarkā and āgrittyā settings that is so prevalent in fantasy (and also in general) right now, because I physically can not shut up about it
It is hope and love and compassion that saves each character individually, and because of that, the world. Frodo fails in the end, but his acts of compassion from earlier in the story save the day. And even as the world is saved, it is acknowledged that Frodo failedāwithout judgement, without blame. He fails, and he is still loved.
And like what can happen in the real world, he is still irrevocably changed by his trauma. But there is still hopeāhe has to leave, but he leaves with the promise of healing, and the promise that his ever-faithful Sam will follow.
Aragorn, Boromir, Frodo, Sam; each and every one of the characters are driven by their love of the people around them and their hope for the future. They cling to that love and hope throughout their trials, and that bears them through.
Of course people are watching it for comfort!!!! Lotr is eternally consistent in its promise, which Sam articulates so clearly in The Two Towers: āEven darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines, itāll shine out the clearer.ā
Things are dark and awful and terrible, but it will not be that way forever. That is the promise of LOTR. A promise of hope, and the reminder that it is love and compassionāfor our friends, for our families, for the strangers weāve never even metāthat will save us in the end.
I just want to add, itās not just that The Lord of the Rings rejects grimdark and gritty fantasy - The Lord of the Rings is the original. Grimdark is what you get when you reject the bright half of the eucatastrophe.
