the notion of saving lives at all costs prevents suicidal people from speaking about their experiences in a candid way, knowing they will be decentered (e.g. “your family/friends will be devastated if you die”), subject to moral arguments (e.g. “suicide is a selfish act”), referred to someone else, often someone who has a hefty paywall behind their listening ear (e.g. “are you seeing a therapist about this?”), or incarcerated against their will. because of this, voices of suicidal people are left out from conversations about suicide, even paradoxically in campaigns encouraging suicidal people to reach out for support.
in order to break the stigma around suicidality, we have to break away from the prevention-no-matter-what script and honor suicidal people’s autonomy, allowing them to speak freely about their lived experience even in the face of personal discomfort for nonsuicidal people. in our current society, nonsuicidal people wield power/privilege over suicidal people. if your immediate reaction to hearing about a marginalized person’s pain is to shut them down in some way, you need to evaluate why you are centering your own comfort above another person who is confiding in you.
I think we need to talk more about Shane in the 24 hours following a Cup win. Like that is peak uninhibited Shane Hollander. He’s kissing babies. He’s chugging champagne by the bottle. He’s attempting to climb every surface. He’s attempting the worm? He’s going to the club bathroom, sending Ilya a hole pic and a 1200 word text describing all the ways he deserves to be fucked. Then he’s going back out and attempting the worm again
people so badly want ilya to be “the man” and shane to be “the woman” in hollanov’s dynamic when that isn’t supported in the books or the show lmao. like this weird reaction people give the scene where shane rims ilya and the pearl clutching reaction i’ve seen across all social media is odd. and i like that hollanov have a set top/bottom dynamic, but people don’t understand that queer relationships are not binary and it can be true that shane rims ilya occasionally and is still a bottom. furthermore, it can be true that shane is a bottom and is also masculine. people try to baby girl-ify shane so hard, and that’s fine if it’s for fun and for a fic/making jokes, but when it bleeds into your actual analysis of who shane is that is a problem imo. it feels a bit racially charged, especially when ilya is stereotyped to be a hyper masculine cold stone top when ilya is arguably more emotional than shane and is more comfortable in his queerness.
like it’s okay to prefer hollanov having a rigid dynamic (esp because they do prefer their top/bottom dynamic in canon and that is also a true aspect of queerness), but people often make the mistake of treating hollanov as if they are a heterosexual couple and are operating on a traditionally patriarchal dynamic when that couldn’t be further from the truth. like idk maybe if you feel strange about the idea of ilya being rimmed in s2 and that’s super gross to you, you should look inwardly at that instinctual reaction and examine why it’s so uncomfortable/gross to you.

they are really saying SHANE HOLLANDER is being forced to be a tradwife because he’s not captain in ottawa. as if shane not being captain negates him winning THREE stanley cups and being the best player in the league all because he isn’t in montreal.
i seriously don’t know how anyone can read the long game and come to the conclusion that it would have been at all healthy for shane to keep doing what he was doing. even if there was NO ILYA shane would still need to be out of an environment like that. he was repressing himself (yes he was out but not like comfortably) so much and was focusing on hockey so much to prove his/montreal’s legacy that it made him constantly anxious and paranoid (not without reason but still) and it made him develop his unhealthy relationship to his diet because he needed to have control.
obviously shane loves hockey and LOVED being a voyageur, it was a key part of his identity. but there was no way that the team was ever going to be accepting of his relationship with ilya. and his relationship with ilya takes precedent and that’s what shane learns in tlg. as much as he wants both hockey AND ilya he has to make a sacrifice.
and people treat hollanov like anime dudebros who tit for tat every stat “well ilya left boston for shane HE CARES MORE HE SACRIFICED MORE HE IS THE BIGGER VICTIM” or “shane had to leave montreal to play housewife for ilya and took a paycut and isn’t captain so he is a loser now i guess HE IS THE BIGGER VICTIM” idk sometimes when you are in a relationship you have to make sacrifices and both shane and ilya are the better BECAUSE they are in ottawa.
i am sure shane will struggle because he isn’t in montreal for a long while, and nothing rachel reid said even implies otherwise. if anything she said that shane thinks ilya being captain is hot, and shane thinks anything ilya does is hot. but there is something so weird about calling shane a housewife or implying that if he isn’t captain his life is worthless and he sucks now. like i think shane trying to be someone outside of this intense pressure he put on himself is a good thing actually and could be healthy.
Actually, I do want season 2 to blow its music budget on a mainstream song. But it’s not Diamonds by Rihanna, and not even because I dislike the placement of that song. I want them to blow all their money to get the Centaurs’ goal song, DJ Khaled’s “All I do is Win,” because I want the absolutely rancid vibes of Ilya scoring a hat trick and then just skating dejectedly back to the bench while that song plays as their fan (1) cheers, because yeah Ilya got a hat trick, but currently the score is 10-3.
