Endlessly diabolical how you can't say words like rape and suicide uncensored without either being criticised by idiots or punished by conglomerates.
It's not r*pe, it's rape. It's not su*cide, it's suicide. Not unalive, dead. The backbone needs to be reintroduced en masse because softening the blow of these concepts with advertising language does absolutely nothing but allow people unaffected by them to feel not even a sting of what they can do, prompting inaction.
And it's been proven that on certain websites, you don't even face a repercussion for using the words as they are. People just started censoring themselves because they feared the potential lack of views and likes and followers which is so nasty itself.
I attended an anti-suicide seminar in college. One of the big takeaways from it was that stigmatizing suicide increases the rate of suicide, because people who are feeling suicidal feel like they can't ask for help. Every time I see babytalk garbage like 'unalive', I think of that.
Use the real words. Words have power, and they matter.
I have said this before, but I think this is one of the reasons that younger generations are so Puritan about… Everything. They’ve grown up on platforms like YouTube that censor the fuck out of every thing. So censored, that they don’t even put it in the captions. And you are demonetised if you say these words.
So these kids are grown up with these banned words and having to use alternative words to describe them (rape/grape, paedophilia/pdf, etc) being the worst things you can do.
However, simultaneously, they’ve also grown up seeing powerful people both in the media, as well as political world leaders who are accused of these things that are sodevastatingly serious no one is even allowed to say the word – and yet these powerful people have zero consequences – or even happily joke and admit that they do these things.
This is such an absurd dichotomy. That the word is the real danger, but that the perpetrators – some of whom had admitted these things – not only retain their power and positions, but actually continue to rise and rise and gain more power.
As an Old watching all of this, I’m able to understand that the act itself of rape or sexual assault or paedophilia or abuse has a far more devastating impact on people than the words.
But these kids growing up on the YouTube generations have grown up with the opposite reality. They’ve grown up with the reality of, sure, the president of the most powerful country in the world can openly joke and brag about the fact that he has sexually assaulted people and that he is sexually attracted to his own daughter – but if you say that in a YouTube video, the video will be buried and possibly even taken down because you said those words. You didn’t censor them.
It baffles me that people are genuinely confused about why the kids these days are so Puritan when it comes to the language of things like sexual assault, but they don’t take the actual act of sexual assault very seriously.
Because they have grown up in a world that Encourages monsters to continue to gain power and popularity despite – or because they are monsters. You’re just not allowed to label their crimes.
Their crimes are acceptable in this society. But people calling them out on those crimes is not.
Orwell was very concerned about the government imposing NewSpeak on the people, but the people have done it themselves.
no dude it's so cool how attached you are to that character who is singled out and ostracized due to the external monstrousness that clashes with their internal spark of humanity. and i love how drawn you are to themes of horror and love, nature versus nurture, otherness, isolation, and the abject. i bet you have normal feelings about your own personhood

Tourists in the Marvel Universe visiting New York and afterwards complaining to whoever they think the Relevant Authorities are like 'i was in New York for a WHOLE WEEK and Spider-Man didn't show up ONCE' and the relevant authorities (idk. City council?) having to issue a statement along the lines of 'we do not control the Spider-Man' (subheading: he is actually a wanted criminal)
Peter Parker (in bed recovering from the flu) (very tired) scrolling twitter like what the fuck is happening
#its like ethical dolphin swimming #we do not control whether the dolphins are present #we do not control whether the spiderman is present
company running 'Spider-man tours' where they take you around places Spider-man often visits and also locations of famous Spider-man incidents advertised like 'come to New York and see the Amazing Spider-man!'* (*no refunds if Spider-man is not there.)
constantly getting complains about Spider-man not turning up and responding like 'it is clear in the promotional materials that we do not guarantee Spider-man'
Peter Parker's work inbox getting flooded by emails from tour companies who want to hire him as a Spider-Man consultant since his photography suggests he's really good at knowing where Spider-Man will be

re-watching the original trilogy is great because you really get a sense for how weird luke skywalker is, just how quickly he becomes that weird AND how quickly he commits to it. Like he's honestly pretty chill in a new hope, but the absolute INSTANT he figures out he can move shit with his mind he goes full send on the cryptic off-putting bullshit. Walking around in full black robes, speaking in riddles, aura farming and backflipping whenever physically possible. He's clearly annoyed when he first meets yoda in empire, but he dismisses that pretty quickly in favour of ALSO becoming an over-dramatic space wizard. The combination of his two teachers being yoda and obi-wan kenobi and him being the son of anakin and padme creates the single most intense and fundamentally kind force sensitive perfectly embodying the heart of the jedi order whilst also serving egregious amounts of cunt and being bizarre to be around. He would have THRIVED as a jedi master during the high republic. he would have been every padawan's favourite and every other master's worst nightmare

An interesting game where you are presented with 10 artifacts from the MET. You have to place where the artifact is from and what time period it is from. Each artifact scores up to 10,000 points, and you lose points the further away your guess is and how far off in time you are. You can only play once a day. Thanks to @baebeylik for showing this to me.
Today I scored really well. Yesterday ... not so much.

I cannot imagine 1) That the Corporation Rim would produce free entertainment 2) That Murderbot paid for any of its serials. The entertainment feed is HuMaxFlix Plus with 500 different micro subscription options, and Murderbot has been the universe's most prolific TV pirate this whole time.
You know, I never thought about it in those terms, and I think you're absolutely correct. No wonder everyone's open to Murderbot offering a free media upload. No wonder it makes friends so fast xD
hrt and transgender surgeries being positioned as dangerous and experimental despite being around for much longer than ozempic, which many people are pushing as a miracle weight loss drug while ignoring its real medical indications and any possible negative side effects
it seems like hypocrisy but it's really the same idea: your body is not yours to control. you are not allowed to be fat, you are not allowed to be trans, we will say whatever it takes to keep you in line
