I too am an advocate that Jason should see Ghosts. But i’m also a huge fan of the paranormal so i’m a little biased. But that being said, I have some things i’d like to add to the collective Jason can see ghosts headcannon.
So the basics, Jason died, came back and can suddenly see ghosts. The question is why? Well, I believe ghosts can see each other since i’ve seen various videos of ghosts trying to warn people about a negative spirits, or claiming that there are multiple spirits currently talking. With this being said, during the time Jason is dead, he’s gaining the abilities of the undead, such as being able to see the undead.
Now because he does come back to life, this undead process comes to a halt, maybe even some aspects fading. We could even say that there might’ve been a time where Jason could’ve made objects move without touching them. But due to the fact that there is a period where Jason is comatose, he would not remember nor even know of that abilities existence.
Now for some reason, the ability to see ghosts does not go away. Maybe because part of Jason is still considered dead to whomever death is, or that this ability is much harder to take away than it is to give.
Now of course he only becomes aware of this after his dunk in the pit and suddenly he’s seeing mangled bodies walking around the island. Does he tell anyone? No, absolutely not. He’s already seen as a zombie, some mishap of life and death. The last thing he needs is to add his sight to his specialties. Especially on an island full of assassins.
Once Jason returns to Gotham, his ghost catalogue and understanding expands. He used to believe ghosts were just ghosts, there could be nothing special nor different about them. Instead he learns that there are different types of ghosts that all depend on their death and feelings.
The first type of Ghost he learns about is a loop, the kind of ghost that can only repeat a certain time of their life. Normally this action is important, maybe it’s their death, maybe it’s something traumatic. Their death normally revolves around whatever this scene includes. They cannot talk, they cannot see you, they are simply stuck repeating something tragic.
For example. Jason unfortunately sees the same lady anytime he is on Brown Bridge. And she is always doing the same thing. She walks up to the railing, crying, looks out across the waters, takes her shoes off and then climbs the railing. The outcome is expected and Jason, seeing as she is a ghost, concludes no one stopped her. Even still, and knowing she is already gone, sometimes Jason wishes to reach out.
What he’s also noted about these loopers, is that there is a reason they are stuck on a loop. These kinds of ghosts in their living life thought they were ready for death. Only to realize they weren’t. There is regret, there is anger, but all they can do is repeat the cycle that they did to themselves. Jason thinks it’s like a punishment for abusing life, that they are now stuck in an endless loop.
The second type of ghost is a wanderer. These ghosts are not bound to their death in such ways like a loop, but instead physically carry their death with them. Meaning that upon seeing them you will see why they are dead. Maybe a couple bullet holes, dismembered limbs, a broken neck, a brutal stab wound, you name it. They can roam as they choose, even if most tend to stay in locations that are important to them, or are where they lost their lives. They can even make noises or move objects.
Jason tries not to talk to these kinds of ghosts because most of the time they are just emotional. They want everyone to know who killed or what killed them. They want everyone to know all the cruel things they went through, and still go through. Or they will ask about family, beg for their family to be watched over so they don’t run into the same fate.
They can be protective of the living, but most times are just more concerned about themselves. Occasionally Jason will run into one that is trying to warn him of a certain ghost. They will tell Jason to watch out as he’s even more likely to be noticed since he can see them.
But Jason also just feels like it’s hard to talk to someone who looks like they were freshly killed, wounds still bleeding, limbs still crooked. It’s enough to see the innocent lives taken at crime scenes, it’s another thing to see them in a state that he knows isn’t living, yet they talk and act like they do.
One of the interactions that pains him was running into Martha and Thomas Wayne. They had simply been walking the halls of the manor when he saw them. It was sad to see the clear reason they were dead, and sad to see Bruce’s parents in general. When they realized he could see them, they lit up, the most excited Jason had seen this type of ghost. He ended up taking them to the library so they could chat. And while they were upset about their death, they were more eager to talk about their son.
They smiled when Jason talked about the family Bruce created, taking in Kids who faced similar situations as his own. When Jason sees them around the manor now, they look more at peace. He also swears their wounds look less fresh, less bloody. Almost like they’re fading.
Jason believes that these kinds of ghosts are people who weren’t ready for death as most of the time their deaths are sudden and unplanned. And while they are traumatized by it, there is no lying to themselves to say they were ready for it. So instead there can be emotion, angry most of the time, sad the rest of the time. And with these reoccurring, negative emotions, Jason has also learned that this type of ghost is the most likely to turn into the kind of ghost that comes with warnings.
The third kind is a different type of wanderer. These look like normal people, except for the typical see through aspect that ghosts have. There are no brutal wounds nor are they stuck in an endless loop. Now granted, they too like to stick to places that mean something to them. But overall these ghosts are more protective of the living, and more positive about their lives.
They will talk about their life, their family and important events. If they are talking to Jason specifically they will even ask him to check up on their family, and report back. Sometimes it’s easier to hear the living say that family is okay. These ghosts also have the ability to make noises and move objects, though while the other wanderers do it in anger, these wanderers will do it as a way to say I’m here.
These kind of ghosts were ready, Jason decided. These were the ghosts that knew death was coming, and accepted it. That were able to look death in the eyes and feel no fear. And like a blessing by death itself, they are giving the ability to physically look the best they did during their life.
Jason only knows that because he met a young, chipper woman named Mary. She looked maybe 35 at the latest. Upon further research, she died at the age of 93. And that clearly was not the age he saw her as.
The last type are the negative entities. These typically start out as a type of wanderer, that over time grow stronger through anger, fear, and belief. Maybe enough people have seen them in the shadows, or enough doors have been slammed by an unknown force. Buildings become popular for this reason and stories spread like wildfires. Fear builds upon anger and the spirit grows stronger.
Like the entity in the conjuring house basement, the evil entity pretending to be a little girl at the sally house, or the entity that has taken over the annabelle doll.
This is the kind of ghost that can look inhuman, a body shaped in a way a human never should. Maybe like a lanky body as tall as the ceiling with its mouth deformed into an evil smile. Or its body on all fours as it crawls with its mouth is open wide enough for horrific screeches. It’s the kind of ghosts the give ideas to horror movie producers.
Jason’s only seen one once, and it’s what fueled his desire to never see one again. He’d taken Dick and Tim to a haunted house that was famous for attracting ghosts hunters with its increasing amount of ghostly interactions. Jason had wanted to see himself if it was truly haunted, and Dick wanted to go to a haunted house for halloween. Though it probably was not what Dick had in mind, it killed two birds with one stone.
During the tour, Jason hadn’t seen much. Maybe a little boy run around a corner, a female ghost that looked the be the woman of the house as she directed her child. But when the tour guide took them to the basement, the supposed most haunted part, Jason knew why.
His chest went tight, his mouth watering as his stomach twisted in knots. His knees felt weak and his brain begged to be let out of his skull. He looked around for the reason, tying to remain casual and to not bring alarm to Dick or Tim, who looked bored. Then in one of the darkest corners of the room, he saw it. The body sticking out as it seemed darker than the dark, tall and lanky but bending down creepily to fit under the height of the room. Its smile was drawn up to what looked like its ears, teeth decayed yet eerily white.
What’s worse is that Jason knew it saw him, and specifically knew he could see it. He felt sick and wanted nothing but to get out. Especially when the entity crawled closer, now towering right above their tour guide, who was obviously oblivious. But then they were being led back upstairs, the tour guide giving his concluding speech. Jason walked the entire way up the stairs with his head turned to look behind him. The entity followed but stopped at the base of the stairs, just watching as the group got out of its reach.
Safe to say Jason never went back.
