The church signs have become one of my favorite recurring motifs. I love the way each episode uses them to reflect Tanrak and Barth's emotional state, almost like a running commentary on everything they're struggling to say out loud.

The church signs have become one of my favorite recurring motifs. I love the way each episode uses them to reflect Tanrak and Barth's emotional state, almost like a running commentary on everything they're struggling to say out loud.
That looks like a broken cross between them to me. The barriers are between them but indirectly, keeping them apart for reasons that neither of them chose but that are there nonetheless.
And Barth breaks the lines separating them because that isn't his cross they're existing inside of, it's not his god that's keeping them apart because he doesn't have a god... but Tanrak does. And Tanrak has a cross and has fear and he believes in sin and in the wrong kind of love and in not wanting this.
Darker again as they get closer and as others come in and Barth is in the cross now, no longer one side but rather in the middle and how is Tanrak supposed to cope with that?
Tanrak isn't just running, he's putting up walls and barriers and doors between them because he might be trapped as himself but he can and will push away anything that threatens his view of himself and what he has to do to get to his parents in heaven.
Barth is too observant for Tanrak's comfort because Tanrak doesn't want to see this part of himself. He never has. And he's afraid of everything he might lose.
And then he just lays it all out. Barth isn't afraid of who he is or what people say about that. Hell, he punches people for using slurs and he doesn't hesitate.
But that honesty is what gets Tanrak to open the door to him. To let him in. To be together in this rather than alone. Scared and unsure and hesitant but no longer alone.
And he holds up a mirror to Barth and together they are seen, they are not alone, they are together. No longer in the dark, no longer in the cold blue of the bathing area but the warm place that they can both simply... be.
The scene being generally playful, while the music is so tense. Beautiiful choice
i feel like the entire show was building up for this moment, this phrase.
these boys were put together to learn about the church, to follow up with a decision that will dictate the rest of their lives while being told being who they are is wrong, that god wants them to behave in a that is not theirs
that being who they are is wrong and god will punish them, will not let them go to heaven, will not bless them with a good life
it's so sad and heartbreaking when you think this what people still believe, they continue with their lives thinking god is good but not for the queers who are in the wrong. who are sinners.
i just feel so protective over barth, he's been so alone in this, punished for being gay, thinking he's a sinner, having to hide he likes a friend, having to hide who he is
all the adults failed him, and he's still standing
Just a little gay boy suffering with jealousy and guilt and barely holding himself together but with no good outlet because he's ✨catholic✨ and that's kind of what they seem to specialize in.
how much do you know phak
The way he keeps checking Tanrak's reaction

Shane shows up to an open practice with a black eye. Shane refuses to talk about it and Ilya keeps trying to hide a grin. Someone takes a picture of him and it goes viral.
The internet is divided: Is the black eye a sex injury or is Ilya an abuser?
The locker room is full of guys making sex jokes at them, to Ilya’s great amusement and Shane’s annoyance. Shane keeps hoping people will stop talking about it, but when the black eye only looks worse at the next game, it’s unavoidable. The media keeps asking cheekily about it and there are think pieces being written online about how Ilya is an abuser and here are all the signs of how he has been abusing Shane for years.
Shane gets his hands on the latter and is angrier at that than he is prideful. So, he drops the video.
The video is from a surveillance camera of the Rozanov-Hollander house’s backyard. Shane is crouched down playing tug of war with their dog Anya. He and Anya are both refusing to let go of rope. Suddenly, Anya drops it and Shane’s hands fling back toward his face and he smacks himself in the face with hands still around the toy. He drops to his back and cups his hands over his eyes.
Ilya runs into view, kneeling next to Shane and is seen as asking him what’s wrong. When Shane explains, Ilya falls over laughing on the grass and Shane throws the dog toy at his head. Ilya gets up and crouches down over Shane and gives him a kiss on the cheek right below his eye. The video ends as he’s leaning down while speaking to give him a kiss on his lips.
Shane captions the video: Word of advice. Let the dog win.

happy pride, I’m haunted by the fact that I’ve seen multiple people say they’re glad Shane’s sex condo was cut from the show because it made them feel “icky” and like “Ilya was Shane’s dirty little secret”. I do have to question what some people think this series is even about
ilya and shane being invited to the wedding of one of their teammates and there's like a hundred people and all the kids take a liking to ilya because he's ilya and he's not boring like the other grown ups and this little boy in particular seems to really like him and ilya notices how he holds his hands over his ears when the guests get a little too loud so he speaks to him a little extra softly and unlike the other children he doesn't like the fun colorful looking sour candy because it makes his mouth hurt so ilya offers him the plain chips instead and he doesn't really play with the other children much but he likes showing ilya his dinosaur toys and the little boy's mother, who doesn't know that he is a famous hockey player, comes over and she seems really surprised that he likes ilya because normally he doesn't like talking to strangers and ilya just chuckles and says he reminds me a little of my husband and the mother goes oh is your husband also autistic? and ilya looks at her confused which starts a conversation about autism and the more this woman tells him the more he looks over at shane and then the little boy and then back to shane and for a reason he can't explain he feels a little panicked as if accidentally discovering something he wasn't supposed to but then at the end of the night he thinks it doesn't even matter because that's his shane who he loves so much who also prefers the plain chips because the flavor isn't overwhelming and maybe there's a word for it but it doesn't matter because ilya wouldn't have him any other way
I think that in their rookie season Ilya popped a skate blade and gets towed to the bench by Marlow's stick, both laughing. He makes a joke about giving him 5 stars as a taxi driver in his post game interview and everyone thinks its hilarious, cue gifs that get used for years.
Cut to two weeks later Shane loses a skate blade and the commentators are wondering how he's going to deal with it - no team mates nearby to give him a lift. Will he do an undignified hop? Crawl? The opposing team start to attack bc Shane's on the other side of the rink from the bench so they think they have a 5-on-4 while Shane scrabbles his way back to the bench. Shane executes some flawless single leg power pulls and gets to the bench in record time, surprising their opponents and leading to a Montreal goal.
This gets held up for years as an example of their differing techniques and how seriously they take the game. Commentators say it shows Shane's dedication, his focus on every tiny bit of skill that could help him. They also use it as proof of Shane's hockey robot persona and that Ilya is more of a people person, he builds camraderie, his team mates love him etc.
Years later they talk about it and Shane tells Ilya that while he did know the technique, he purposefully practiced it to death in the two weeks between the games so he wouldn't get caught out like Ilya.
Because he already knew then that the way his teammates viewed him wasnt the same as how Ilya was viewed in Boston.
