i should really watch the new Trigun, but I don't know if it will ever meet the standards set by my high school friend's 'we didn't know it was a bootleg because getting legit anime was an actual struggle back then' copy, where the subtitles were overall pretty decent but occasionally had completely incomprehensible lines like "it's absolutely muffin" which we took at face value because we thought that was just what the show was like and nobody in rural Ohio knew any Japanese in like 2001.

i think it's also important to note that my friends all heard this and nodded like 'oh yeah that's a fun thing to say' so we used "it's absolutely muffin" as a way to say that something was cool for several years

One of the root problems of our society is a refusal or inability by media to articulate that all those “it’s gonna be an apocalypse” disasters were not disasters because we collectively did something about them.

The good news is this is actually quite correctable. I maintain my firm belief that we as humans are capable of solving almost all of our problems, when we decide to do so.

And I still think that’s going to happen. I don’t know when or how, but I do know that abandoning hope won’t help bring it about.

And I refuse to let the cynics own a chunk of my heart.

This fic became a meme several years back after someone posted to a subreddit looking for a 'book about a clown that's not Stephen King's IT' that turned out to be this fic. The post was discovered by the fic's author, the fic was linked, and, having read it, I completely understand why it would have stuck in someone's mind for years afterward.

To steal from my own comments on the work, the thematic throughlines in this fic are tight as a drum, they flow believably from the characters, and they inform the plot to the very end. While King really wants to talk about nostalgia and childhood and the devastating inevitability of losing it, while also talking about the power of belief and the "innocence" of children and the corrosive nature of fear, this fic came across to me as being very definitely and deliberately about the knock-on effects of trauma, especially childhood trauma, and the importance of interpersonal bonds.

Also, it's tragic, clever, brutal, and, to boil it down to three words, scary as hell. You may never look at a standalone public restroom the same way again.
