Meditation (guided) is honestly so perfect for adhd people it’s so weird. I always just thought it was sitting in the dark listening to music that makes me want to peel my own skin off but it isn’t. Guided meditation is just playing lots of breathing games like it’s just genuinely fun. It’s also just expected that you will drift off and the focus is just more on being kind to yourself when it happens. I know it won’t work for everyone but honestly just please try it, just make sure you choose a short program first (around 5 mins) and just stop when you start feeling very restless.
I’m not a 100% on how it is for primarily hyperactive ppl though but you should definitely try it as well though!
Also I have no idea what it does for you throughout the day but it really helps me fall asleep if I do it right before bedtime
are there any folks with adhd ph around here? i’ve been diagnosed with adhd c but i don’t really struggle with short term memory loss and it’s making me feel insecure/like i was misdiagnosed even though i know i fit the dsm criteria for adhd c and i just wanted to see if it’s common to have adhd and not really have extensive problems with short term memory loss
Sometimes ADHD means wiggling in your seat at work as a means of focusing.
I am an adult.
Kinda wanna start like an unmedicated adhd tips blog or smth
How the ADHD subtypes work
There are three subtypes of ADHD:
Predominantly Inattentive (ADHD-PI)
Predominantly Hyperactive/ Impulsive (ADHD-PH)
Combined type (ADHD-C)
If you were diagnosed as ‘ADD’, you are now ‘ADHD-PI’. If you were diagnosed as ‘ADHD’, you are now ‘ADHD-PH’.
There are NINE symptoms each for PI and PH.
For an adult (17 and older), you need to have 5/9 of the symptoms below for over 6 months to get diagnosed (5/9 from inattentive column or hyperactive).
For a child (under 17), you need to have 6/9 of the symptoms below for over 6 months to get diagnosed (6/9 from inattentive column or hyperactive).
Few things to note:
If you get 5/9 in both, you will be diagnosed as ADHD-C.
People with ADHD-PI CAN have hyperactive symptoms. It’s predominantly inattentive, not only inattentive. I’ve never met a person with ADHD without ANY hyperactive symptoms. Hyperactivity isn’t only physical, it is mental too (racing thoughts, etc).
You can have 5/9 Inattentive symptoms and be diagnosed as ADHD-PI and also have 4/9 Hyperactive symptoms. So you won’t be diagnosed as the Combined type but can still experience severe hyperactive symptoms.
There are three levels of severity: Mild, Moderate and Severe depending on how much it affects your day to day life.
Honestly the more burned out I become in college the more I realize that ADHD really is just Dumbass Disorder
(To clarify i dont mean that adhd ppl are dumb but it lack of executive function ability causes us to make so many easily avoidable stupid mistakes no matter how hard we work.)
For example: I studied for my midterm for literally 30 hours in the 3 days before the exam. I pulled an all nighter on the first night, got 5hrs of sleep the next, and 8 hrs the night before. I didn’t stop studying in that time except for the few hours that I had class. I was fucking ready for that test. I had even remembered to schedule a testing room to get extra time on the test.
I sat down on the test and read over each question, highlighting the key terms and writing down the equations I needed for each problem, making sure I didn’t miss anything.
Then I looked up and realized I had spend 60% of my test time just analyzing the questions.
I didn’t have enough time to finish the test even though I knew how to do each problem.
I got a 65% on my midterm. Because of my fucking time blindness.
Note: if i had the time, i would have gotten an A easily because I had put in the work for it.
30 hours of studying. For a D.
If I didn’t have to babysit my dumbass adhd brain that required me to re read each question three times I would have gotten an A.
And thats why it sucks so much that the only thing people know about ADHD is the lack of focus because thats not even close to the worst part of it as a learning disorder.
I can’t talk to disability services and ask them to accomodate the fact that I did something that would unfortunately still widely be considered just a stupid mistake. Because stupidity isn’t a learning disorder. But if the other 70% of ADHD wasn’t forgotten about, there might have been something I could do to save my grade and I would have felt less burnt out because my hard work would have actually been worthwhile to get a good grade.
Since my friends and I have kept a quote list for years and I just got diagnosed with ADHD a few months ago I just thought I would share some of my more iconic ADHD moments that I missed during high school:
"I don't have priorities. I have deadlines."
"How are you?" -my friend "Yes, hello." -me
"We disagree. No.... We VERY agree." -a great start to an in-class debate
"The way to be good is to know how to fix mistakes." -a good life motto when careless mistakes are inevitable
"I have 19 tabs open to 'Gatlinburg Weather' and I don't remember opening any of them."
"If everyone's hell was personalized mine would be endless mindful meditation"
"I lost my water bottle. Again."
"My card for Quizlet just says 'you know who it is." (I didn't know who it was)
"I haven't checked my grades for over a year I think."
"You know I have my permission."
"I don't really like introspection... Or thinking."
"I just lost my lanyard while it was around my neck"
"This road has one lane and I'm in both of them."
"Bold of you to assume I have self-control."
