So while doing some pirate research for the play I’m writing I stumbled upon one of the most amazing things I’ve ever read. In the 5th century A.D. there was a Scandinavian princess called Alwilda who’s father tried to set her up to marry Alf, the Prince of Denmark. Alwilda wasn’t cool with this so she and some female companions dressed as men, stole a ship, and sailed away. Eventually they met a company of pirates who were in need of a new captain and they were so captivated by her that they elected her as their new leader. Her crew became so infamous that Prince Alf was sent out to stop them. When their ships met he took Alwilda prisoner and she was so impressed by Alf’s skill that she agreed to marry him after all and eventually became the Queen of Denmark.
I stopped caring whether this was factually accurate about halfway through because it’s completely AWESOME.
Medievalist here for triumphant fact-checking: this story is, if not true, at least true according to the history of the Danes (Gesta Danorum) written in the 12th century by Saxo Grammaticus. You can read his account of Alwilda’s story in the original Latin here, or in English translation here. Highlights include:
She exchanged woman’s for man’s attire, and, no longer the most modest of maidens, began the life of a warlike rover. Enrolling in her service many maidens who were of the same mind, she happened to come to a spot where a band of rovers were lamenting the death of their captain, who had been lost in war; they made her their rover captain.
I love the implication that there were lots of Danish maidens just WAITING for the opportunity of a life of piracy…
Reblogging my old post for this A+ addition to it
Just a heads up right now: on the day when Trump dies, I’m going to be extremely tasteless about it. It’s going to get ugly. You are going to see a side of me I am not proud of. I don’t want any call-outs in my inbox, I’m stating right now that lines will be crossed.
How disgusting can someone be
I wouldn’t even say this about my worst enemy
Forget the fact that its trump. If you agree with this youre fucking evil. Evil literally lives inside you. Wow.
Anyways all of y’all AND the evil that literally lives inside of you are invited to the sick ass house party I’m throwing when lord dampnut kicks the bucket
I feel like all you Americans need to take a look at what happened here in the UK after Maggie Thatcher died. Because when it comes to tasteless celebrations fuelled by anger and the death of a hated political leader, we REALLY pushed the boat out. We had street parties. We had burning effigies. We pushed “Ding Dong the Witch is Dead” to the top of the charts out of sheer hatred. Bone up kiddos, and I really hope you manage to do that truly American thing, of dramatically outdoing us with your celebrations.
Reblogging for last comment.
With the way this year is going, the sooner it happens the better.
*this can be reblogged every year
I’m going to make cake. There’s going to be fireworks. There WILL be a burnt effigy.
Look, I’m gonna level with you americans for a second. When old wrinkly and orange kicks the bucket, for once in my life, possibly the only time, I’ll actually want to be able to see the fireworks from across the Atlantic. And I daresay I won’t be the only one. So listen to me and listen closely, cause I’ll only say it once: When the moldy Cheeto bites it, it’s the one and only chance you’ll likely have at being loudly, unbearably, obnoxiously American in your celebration and for once, the rest of the world won’t complain.
…I know I just reblogged this, but that last comment 👌👨🏻🍳
Listen I’m already designing the cake I’m gonna order from Publix.
I want to see the fireworks from AUSTRALIA, guys. Make it happen.
I expect the abridged video compilation of Best Fireworks Only be 7h long lofi playlist.
I want to be able to sit my ass on the shore of Lake Ontario and smell the rocket’s red flare from across the water. I’ll float beer over.
Having experienced a lot of it in my 20s, I think some of the worst, pettiest, most straight up this-is-just-bullying-you're-passing-off-as-praxis incidences of Queer Infighting endemic to young people can be best understood as attempts to exercise power by people with very little power.
Like you're 22, you're queer, you've just become a Marxist, the scope of World Suck is overwhelming and you have $30 in your bank account. What can you do to feel like you have any power? Well, you can try to get your frenemy cancelled for cosplaying a character from a problematic show. You can write a public callout post over someone's obviously friendly use of a slur you don't think they technically have the right to reclaim. Doing this stuff can make you feel like you have power and your actions have an impact. Unfortunately the impact in question is a negative impact on other marginalized people. But that often takes some maturity and self-reflection to notice.
I'm reminded of this post from 2017. To paraphrase, OP took part in community service via their university and part of that was cleaning the bathrooms at the local homeless community centre, which would frequently get trashed, not because the homeless people using them disrespected the work of the people cleaning them but because they had so little control over other things that happened in their lives, and the bathroom was something they could affect.
This, too, is a trashed bathroom; young queer people living through hell and having precious little control over their circumstances or the world in which they exist can affect something by using the language of social justice as a cudgel on their would-be allies, as well as getting a brief feeling of power over someone else by doing it.
It's not worth it. Don't trash your community bathrooms.
every year of restoring native plant species I have more pollinators and new species. went out this morning and there were literally clouds of tiny bees swarming my smooth sumac. mountain mint and coneflower is attracting loads of pollinators too.
Shifting baseline syndrome can occur with things getting better as well. I found myself thinking "huh it seems like there isn't as many pollinators on my coneflowers this year" but then realized it's just because the pollinators attracted to my sumac, mountain mint, gray headed coneflower, blackeyed susan etc. are so numerous that the pollinators on the coneflowers SEEM like relatively few
Had to give myself a reality check remembering how I used to spend ages chasing down one butterfly to get a picture of it and now the butterflies are everywhere.
Like, there are bug species in the meadow that I used to take lots of pictures of but no longer have very many pictures of them. And it's because there's so many of them now I straight up stop noticing them.
The Perspective of the Young Woman
Within this struggle, the position of the young woman is decisive. The exploiting capitalist system assigns her a peculiar mission: to have no mission at all. She is encouraged to pursue individual success, aesthetic conformity, and silent adaptation. Her political voice is trivialized; her anger is pathologized. Yet at the core of the young woman’s identity lies a resistant and militant spirit. She carries within herself not only the vitality of youth but also the historical memory of women’s resistance. To awaken this spirit requires conscious organization. The young woman must insist on organizing an education within the perspective of the Democratic Nation* — an education that strengthens collective ethics, historical awareness, and political responsibility. She must question everything in the existing system: the roles assigned to her, the images imposed upon her, the limits drawn around her dreams. Questioning, however, must not remain individual. Her reflex must be organized. Thus, it is up to the young woman to shatter the perception created by capitalism about her and her people. She must develop new political methods and ways of participation. She must bring her own creativity and revolutionary nature into politics as a determining force. When the young woman organizes, she does not merely defend herself. She transforms the entire youth movement. For without women’s freedom as a guiding principle, no revolutionary spirit can sustain itself. For instance, the Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua and the Soviet Union under Stalin both demonstrated how patriarchal dominance within the movement not only limited women’s contributions but undermined the revolution as a whole. In these contexts, the refusal to elevate women’s roles within the revolution ultimately led to the decline of socialism. The lessons learned from these failures highlight the importance of integrating women’s leadership into the heart of revolutionary struggles.
from Beyond "Gen Z": Defending Revolutionary Youth Spirit
*The concept of a Democratic Nation, as proposed by Abdullah Öcalan, envisions a society where cultural diversity and democratic principles are embraced through decentralized governance and collective self-determination. It calls for a transformation of the nation-state into a system based on democratic confederalism, women‘s liberation, and social ecology.

In the club
I think I’m literally never gonna be sick of this masterpiece. I think watching it on a loop for eight hours could fix me. Dancing’s what clears my soul. Dancing’s what makes me whole.
I just love that this very video is an accumulation of thousands of years worth of art made by people who have never met each other. The concept of this video was so completely unfathomable to every single artist who made the sculptures and yet they’ve all put something toward the creation of it.
