I recently discovered laundry stripping and y’all, no matter how much of a crock of shit you think fast fashion is, you’re underestimating.

OKAY SO. You know how we talk about how one way fast fashion has made itself “necessary” is that the clothing looks like shit and feels horrible after just a few washes?
Let. Me. Tell. You. Something.
Laundry stripping is a process where you load your laundry into a tub or bin (I’ve been using my bathtub) with warm water, half a cup of borax, half a cup of washing soda, and half a cup of laundry soap (not detergent, SOAP, there’s a chemical difference). Leave it there for at least eight hours. I’ve been going for 12-24.
What you will come back to is a tub full of nearly-opaque black-gray-brown water that absolutely REEKS. This is normal. You are looking at (and smelling) hard water buildup, body sweat and oils that were embedded in the fabric, dead skin, and just regular grime.
Wring out your clothes. Throw them in the washer. (I like to do a spin-only cycle before going any further, because I have one of those washers that determines by weight how much water any given load needs.) Wash as usual.
You will notice I didn’t suggest any further pretreatment, and that’s because 1) you don’t want to layer too many chemicals on top of each other but also 2) you may not even need it.
When your clothes come out, check each one as it goes into the dryer, and if anything else s still stained, set it aside to run again with a regular pretreatment. One of the sweaters I did this with apparently did need a second treatment…to deal with what appears to have possibly been a hot chocolate stain that was previously invisible due to “well, it’s old” dinginess. I was planning to throw this sweater out. It looks almost new now. I need to wash it one more time for the probably-a-hot-chocolate stain, and then it needs to have the hem weighted to block it and bring it back to evenness, but dude. I wear my clothes to rags and I thought this thing was unfixable. “I need to reshape it” is nothing.
Remove clothes from dryer when done. Fucking MARVEL at the colors and how good the fabric feels. Give them a smell. Get righteously and royally angry that you can rejuvenate this stuff so easily, with a process that does take awhile but is 90% hands-off, but we’ve been trained to believe it’s all got to be binned once a year because discoloration and gross fabric is “normal wear and tear” and can’t be fixed.
It’s utterly unreal! I just pulled a seven-year-old work undershirt out of the dryer and this thing looks NEW!! It FEELS almost new!!! One of the shirts I hung up from the last load is older than some of the people on this site and it went from “I keep this to wear on laundry day, for sentimental reasons” to “I could actually wear this out of the house, it looks old but respectable”! The pajama bottoms I’m wearing were from Goodwill and they have BRIGHT YELLOW in them! I thought it was goldenrod!!
I do not know how often you’re supposed to do this (doing it every time can strip the dye out of your clothes, not to mention it’s way too much work to do every time), but once or twice per season seems respectable. I don’t wear white, so I can’t test the “it will make whites look almost-new as well” claim, but I’ve seen a lot of people on the cleaning subreddit attest that it works.
Just remember: WASHING soda. Not baking soda. I tried baking soda and a little bit happened, but not a lot.
Go forth. Rejuvenate your clothing. Strip your laundry.
I love this for properly washing my work clothes at the end of field season - my undershirts came out near-new, and the awful oily black-grey water was all grime, because my shirts were originally white.

This is to say, they take the same attitude JKR does: racism is wrong because it's factually incorrect on a pedantic level and not because it inherently places a certain group of people as inferior, a wrong belief to have no matter what.
For example, in the third Harry Potter, Hermoine gets called a slur by Draco. She goes to Hagrid, upset, and instead of saying Draco's wrong because he's bigoted and hateful, Hagrid starts talking pedantically. Not all muggle borns are inferior because Hermoine is academically gifted, and Neville, a pureblood, isn't. So therefore, racism is wrong! 👍🏾. Of course the implication is that if Hermoine wasn't good at school she'd deserve it..? And that's how tumblr users speak about racism.
My real world example is how some tumblr users tried to defend rap music by saying, not all of it is about drugs, sex and violence, so therefore it shouldn't be dismissed. But, what about the rap music that is about those things? Does that deserve to be belittled and mocked?
Astute observation as always. It's the subconscious belief that everything white is naturally superior because white people made it. While black art is naturally uncomfortable/hard to emphasise with because not only is it not white, it's black, and there's always an underlying sense of percieved aggression attached to blackness. For it to be liked, white people often project their own whiteness onto it (see things like how fandom treated Miles Morales after the Spiderverse movies). And when something, like rap music, does have an aggressive element to it, white people use that as an excuse to express discomfort while listening to heavy metal because white anger is the status quo and black anger is always a threat.
I didn't go far enough in describing the whitewashing as I'd like so here's my elaboration: fandom will often ignore a black character's aspects to their black culture and give them interests more aligned with white people (example: the fandom surrounding Tyler, the Creator's alter egos, where some of them lose their swag era fashion and get replaced with notoriously anti-black movements like (modern) scenemo), remove any "rough" edges to the black character to act "soft", tiktok softboi style (example: the woobification of Miles Morales), turning it into a big joke to laugh at and then call cringe (examples: Drake vs Kendrick rap beef, "brainrot" words that are just AAVE) or even just straight up ignoring the black context to music to fit their own white experiences (example: 'Wavy' by SZA being used by white girls to complain about not being blonde, the 'Black Barbies' by Nicki Minaj trend on tiktok being hijacked by insecure white girls, and ad nauseam).
This all just ties back into seeing black art as inferior and "fixing" what black art they deem just about good enough to be more white and ie more acceptable

Share the knowledge
Okay, here we go! I'm gonna try and put this in order from least to most technical knowledge required. I'm not responsible if you accidentally create SkyNet etc.
Level 1: browser extensions
This one is basically impossible to get wrong, or at least to get wrong badly enough that it causes any problems.
Get Firefox, or a Firefox fork like Waterfox. If you use a fork, make sure it's one that will let you use add-ons. On a PC, pretty much any Firefox fork will take add-ons, but on mobile devices, many don't. Iceraven is one that does.
Get the add-ons uBlock Origin, YouTube Sponsorblock (if you use YouTube), and FBCleaner (if you use Facebook).
uBlock Origin comes with a built-in list of filters to block ads and trackers, but you can add your own filters to block any specific element of a website you don't like. You know those goddamn floating frames on fandom.com sites that block half the screen? Now you can zap 'em.
Sponsorblock uses crowdsourced timestamps to automatically skip sponsor spots and self-promotion in YouTube videos. Never listen to anyone say "hit like and subscribe" or "Raid Shadow Legends" again.
FBCleaner hides all content from your feed except posts from people, groups, and pages you've actually chosen to follow.
Level 2: leaving enshittified services
The software that's become standard over the years in a lot of fields is steadily selling more of your data, showing you more ads, and pushing you to buy more expensive subscriptions. Time to tell them to get fucked.
Dump Adobe apps for Affinity or Krita. Drop Microsoft for LibreOffice. Change your default search engine from Google to DuckDuckGo or Qwant. Use OpenStreetMaps instead of Google or Apple Maps.
Level 3: network-level DNS fuckery
DNS, or Domain Name Service, is the thing that tells your computer where www.website.com is actually located. By hacking your network's DNS you can force it to tell your devices that ad-hosting domains don't exist at all. Some of the steps on this one can get pretty technical, but because you're doing all the difficult stuff on a dedicated device, you can't really fuck up anything that seriously.
Get yourself a Raspberry Pi (a cheap older one like a model 3B will work just fine for this purpose), and follow a guide like this one to get it set up running AdGuard Home. AdGuard, like uBlock, has built-in filter lists, but you can also add your own if there are specific domains you want to block.
Once it's up and running, you'll need to change the DNS settings on your router to point to your AdGuard service. This is different for every router but will always start with logging into the admin panel with a password printed on a little sticker somewhere on the router.
With that done, every time a device on your home network looks for ads.website.com, it'll get back a message that says "sorry, can't find it", so it won't be able to load any ads.
Level 4: Android-specific DNS fuckery
Because AdGuard runs on your home network, it can't block ads on your phone when you're away from home - and what's worse, your phone will sometimes remember the addresses it got when you were out and about, and ads will get past your AdGuard wall even when you're home.
To avoid this, get AdAway for DNS-based ad-blocking directly on your phone. The easy, but less seamless, way of using AdAway is the "local VPN mode", which doesn't require you to do any mucking about with your phone's operating system.
Level 5: automated media piracy
The best way to stop seeing ads on all your streaming services is to stop using streaming services. There are loads of ways to do this, but the best ones involve setting up what's called an "arr stack" (Google that for setup guides) along with nzbget and a usenet account. Most of the time you'll want to set this stuff up on a dedicated device - an old laptop gathering dust in the closet is a great option, or you can grab something used from a charity shop or a local electronics recycler.
The great thing about usenet is that unlike with torrents, you don't have to do any sharing from your computer, so you're in a lot less legal jeopardy - legally speaking, distributing pirated content is waaayyy more serious than accessing it. I pay about £3 a month for a secure, high-bandwidth usenet service.
Once you start getting your own collection of media on your own computer, use the open-source media library manager Jellyfin to browse and play things from basically any device.
Oh, and don't be a dick. Pirate all you want from big corporations, but please pay independent small-time creators for their work.
Level 6: fucking with Android
Android phones are a lot more locked-down than they used to be, but depending on the device you own you can still do a lot of messing around under the hood. Note that if you get something wrong while doing this, there is always the possibility that it will turn your device into a paperweight.
Before you buy a device, check where it sits on the Bootloader Unlock Wall of Shame. Once you've bought it, check the xda-developer forums for guides on how to unlock it and "root" it (gain admin access) with Magisk.
Once Magisk is installed, you can add modules to do all sorts of cool stuff, including using AdAway in "root mode" which makes it basically invisible.
You can also install YouTube ReVanced, which will do all the ad- and sponsor blocking stuff we took care of in your Windows browser a few paragraphs ago. Be careful: there are a lot of fake sites out there pretending they're associated with the ReVanced project which might be injecting malware into their downloads. This Reddit post has the official instructions and links.
Also, try out the modded version of Facebook from APKmoddone, which will block most of the same shit as the FBcleaner add-on from earlier. There's always a possibility that modified apps like this are doing something dodgy, but I've never had any issues with this one personally.
Level 7: fucking with Windows
This one is scary because it can seriously fuck up your shit if something goes wrong, but some really cool people have actually made it very simple to strip all the bloat, ads, and spyware out of Windows. The tool I use is ReviOS. Start reading at https://www.revi.cc/docs. Basically, you'll need to download a tool called AME Wizard and the ReviOS "playbook" that tells AME what to do. Read the documentation before you do any of this.
Level 8: switching to Linux
I'm not going to pretend this is an option for everyone. Half the software I use on a weekly basis isn't available on Linux. But if you can switch? Do it. These days, Ubuntu - one of the most popular flavours of Linux - is built with people switching from Windows in mind, and a lot of things will be pretty intuitive. It also has great documentation and a huge community you can go to for help if you're confused about stuff.
And that, friends, is a comprehensive approach to banishing the demons of capitalism from your home!
With JoAnne Fabrics going out of business I feel it is my duty as a cosplayer, historical costumer, and general sewing gremlin to help teach y'all how not to be reliant on evil overpriced mediocre big box stores for fabric and cosplay supply, cause if I catch y'all going into Homophobia Lobby to get cosplay fabrics imma have to start throwing hands. And frankly you guys all deserve better.
- Find a neighborhood full of brown people. Probably a slightly poorer neighborhod. I know, I know, but they will have small independent fabric stores. Selection in each may vary. Hispanic and Caribbean areas will give you prints that EAT. Muslim areas will give you fabrics with amazing drapery. Indian and Southeast Asian areas will give you beading that would make the House of Worth wet with envy. (Try to avoid oldwhitelady quilting stores unless you are a knitter or are specifically trying to cosplay Kirsten Larson.) (Also ask while you're there for lunch/dinner spot recommendations. Your fabric store guy usually has a buddy with a joint nextdoor with the best *insert relevant ethnic food here* you'll ever put in your mouth.)
- DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP WITH THE OWNER OF SAID STORE. This I cannot stress enough. Abdul, my fabric guy, can and will get me whatever I want cause he knows me, knows I bring in other young people, and knows I will be back every month for more. Indie fabric stores tend to have older clients. They are anxious to see faces under 60. Just chat with whoever is in there about the kind of stuff you want and need and they will help you. This also frequently leads to discounts. I have not paid listed price for fabric in years and just walked out of Abdul's with 7~ yards of gorgeous teal satin for 10 bucks. Not a yard. Total.
- Do not be afraid of mess. The best shit comes from stores that look like a hurricane went through them. Don't try to understand the organization. (One day, 4 years into your relationship with the store, suddenly the fabric gods will reveal the knowledge to you.) Again, talk to whoever is in there about your project. They'll help.
- Give up on one stop shopping. Get your crafting supplies elsewhere. Like a small independent hardware store. There's usually an old guy in there that reminds you of an uncle who will also help you.
-Worbla and whatever other Cosplay Specific Material you're using is a fatphobic material straight from Satan's hot taint, you do not need it, and any old hardware/tractor supply dad will help you find better, more durable armor/weapon/detailing material. Don't snub your nose at paper mache and plaster of paris. Venetian Mask makers have been using it for years. Balsa wood is also your friend. Hardware store Uncles will teach you to work with both.
- Elderly people are your bffs. If you see an old person TALK TO THEM. They know how to do all kinds of shit. I know there's a hesitation around old people because of the political climate and a fear that they may be homo/trans/whatever-phobic, but hey....minds are changed by making friends. My elderly Muslim fabric supplier is an Our Flag Means Death fan because of me gushing about the teal I needed for Stede Bonnet. He wishes me happy pride now. He put bolt of rainbow in the window in June and kept it up all summer. And he'd never had a thought about queers before me.
- Don't feel limited to Craft and Fabric stores. Hardware stores are cool. They stock outdoor fabrics and umbrella and furniture covers that are very durable....my first cosplay was made out of patio furniture covers. Also upholstery stores and upholsterers have velvets and damasks and faux leather and real leather and all sorts of rich textures. Most of them will part with a few yards pretty cheap. Second hand sheets and bedspreads and curtains also make some really cool garments. A significant amount of my ren fair garb started as household goods.
- If you are forced to order fabric online, please for the love of all that is holy DO NOT BUY FROM MOOD or any other famous store. You're paying for their branding and their place on certain reality shows I will not mention. Indie is always cheaper for the quality and usually not abusing their workers.
- If the fabric/hobby/hardware/upholstery/etc store you develop a relationship with is inconveniently far from you, see if said owner is willing to take your order via phone and send it to you. You'd be surprised how accommodating people in the crafting and sewing world can be.
It all really comes down to having to form a community. I know finding multiple small stores is a lot less convenient than Joannes. But forming a relationship with a local supplier will, in the long run, yield you much better results AND put money and good back into a community near you.

Oh, okay. I see. You think this has nothing to do with you. You go to your closet and you select out, oh I don’t know, that gaslight gatekeep girlboss meme, for instance, because you’re trying to tell the world that you think modern feminism has been co-opted by corporations. But what you don’t know is that that meme is not from Instagram, it's not from Twitter, it's not from Tiktok, it’s actually from Tumblr. You’re also blithely unaware of the fact that in January 2021, Tumblr user missnumber1111 posted, "today's agenda: gaslight gatekeep and most importantly girlboss." And then I think it was a-m-e-t-h-y-s-t-r-o-s-e, wasn’t it, who reblogged it with an image of the phrase edited over a piece of "Live, Laugh, Love" wall art? And then gaslight gatekeep girlboss showed up in the feeds of eight different Twitter repost accounts. Then it filtered down through Instagram and then trickled on down into some tragic “alt side of Tiktok” where you, no doubt, fished it out of some clearance bin. However, that meme represents millions of notes and countless Tumblr users and so it’s sort of comical how you think that you’ve made a choice that exempts you from Tumblr when, in fact, you’re wearing the meme that was selected for you by the people in this room. From a pile of “stuff.”

recently saw someone's "advice for your 30s" which included something like "never get on the floor without having an escape plan for getting back up" and um. if you are otherwise able bodied and having trouble getting up from the floor in your 30s. you are very unhealthy. yes, even, if not especially, for that age.
I'll add that if you are having trouble getting up from the floor at any age, you should definitely practice and repeat it as a form of exercise. Yes I am serious, it is one of the exercises I used to do in dance class. Those muscles are important and you definitely don't want them to go away ---- especially if you fall down!!! Most people don't realize they've lost the ability to get up from the floor until years later when they have fallen and are trying to get back up and can't. That's such a scary situation to be in. If you've been chalking up the decline of your physical form to chronic pain related to aging, stop to think about the possibility of it being your body's way of telling you that the bigger stronger muscles are constantly compensating for the smaller weakening ones. And then do something about it. Don't let yourself wither.
hey @whitmanic! mind sharing your routine for those who don't know where to start?
I can try!
Granted I will give a caveat up front: I am already a fairly active person and walk an average of ten miles a day and do a lot of outdoors work. I also have a testosterone prescription that does make passive strength training a little easier. So what I do when I stretch is focused on the needs I am at. Everyone is going to be different, especially starting out!
Second caveat is that I am not trained in exercise, so do your own research, and do what's best for your body.
As far as stretching goes, the biggest focus, at least for me, is trying to get my tendons/muscles/fibers more flexible. This means extension based routines. With the exception of a few back exercises, I try to hold for about a count of ten per stretch. I tend to do this:
Extending arms to their peak above the head, and trying to reach my toes, hold. Usually, on the first one, I can't quite reach my toes without straining my calves. This is usually an indication-- in most muscle and tendon groups-- that you need to gradually work up, in the routine, the extension necessary to do this.
Rock back on the ball of one foot and lean back until you feel the calf and shin pull. Hold. Repeat with other leg.
Rock onto the toes with both legs until you feel your calf extend, hold.
I like to view muscles and tendons as continuations of each other. It's not enough to extend just the calf and shin without also following that momentum into other groups. So, I like to pull my leg behind me and stretch the quads/etc of my thigh.
Reps of other leg stretches, like secretaries, modified lunges, etc.
Try to reach your toes (bullet 1) again. Should be able to see some extension you didn't before. If you don't, no biggie! This stuff takes time. Sometimes I won't see improvement for a week, two-- just keep at it and eventually your body will develop small muscle fibers and flexibility as it's consistently pushed.
Now I usually get on the floor to work on my back and abs. I've found nothing helps my back pain and flexibility more than the Plow Pose. Don't worry about not being able to get your feet all the wah over your head/behind you at first. It takes time to develop that. But being on the floor, pulling your legs straight in the air, holding, and then slowly trying to pull your legs back behind you really helps to pull that spine pain down and through your body instead of it just sitting there and building up. This is my fsvorite stretch. I'll hold it and manipulate my legs for a few minutes on this one. This is the one I consistently see flexibility improvements on.
Rock back upwards to a sitting position. Butterfly. This helps with my hips.
Pushups now. I try to do 15-20, but that's just where I am at. If you can do five? Even just two? That is more than you did before. You will develop core strength this way, and because you're already warmed up and worked into an active state, you might be surprised to find it's easier to pull a rep of these bad boys than you thought possible.
If I'm trying to really push myself, I might do a plank or another core strengthening exercise but that's just how I feel in the moment.
Important now is to wind your muscles back down. Any movement at all is good for you. We just did a bunch of stretching that, whether it felt like it or not, pulled your body in ways it's not used to. Give her some aftercare! Do some lighter floor stretching, don't strain it as hard, and tbh, I often like to lie completely prone for a minute or two with my back straight on the ground, and then work myself up into a very straight sit. It usually helps everything settle.
I'll often stretch my arms now when I'm sitting, over the head, extended outwards, etc.
Above all-- listen to your body. Don't push it farther than it needs to be. This is passive exercise/active stretching. The goal is to increase your heart rate and body heat, pulling your body into an Active state. If you've achieved this, this means you are actively making body improvements. It might be uncomfortable, it might hurt a little, and you can stop at any time, but this is the goal. Learn to love discomfort. Don't push to the point that something feels tight enough to snap, but some muscle ache and extension pressure is how you slowly work those fibers into being more flexible, permanantely. It WILL get easier, day by day, and you WILL feel improvements. :)

these are a mandatory part of every windows install for me. been using them for years and it's such a lifesaver
as an aroace person with limited sexual experience, no interest in watching porn, and poor sex ed as a teen, there IS something simultaneously funny and vaguely tragic about being 28 adult years old and realising how extremely tiny your frame of reference is for genitalia and deciding you should expand this to better understand bodies (yours and others). and then you're just there like "okay so what the fuck do I even google right now, anyway"

why wouldn't it be thank you? you expressed interest in sexual education materials related to genital body diversity, and i keep these resources on hand for exactly that purpose.
it's natural to be curious about bodies--yours and others. the presence or lack of sexual intent motivating that curiosity is irrelevant. they're just body parts

i think that r/GrowYourTDick is the best repository of images of specifically trans masculine bottom growth. I can't comment on the culture of the forum, but there is absolutely a lot of images of transmasculine genitalia and extensive discussion of physical changes.
For (relatively*) trustworthy information, Hudson's FTM Resource Guide contains a lot of information about medical side effects and Things To Generally Be Aware Of, like increased risk for yeast infections and tips for managing locker rooms/swimming. *I can't verify that this information is up to date
I'm not directly connected to any trans masc transition support networks, but i know that discord is a thriving space for transition support and information sharing. i think it would be relatively easy to find positive community there. they often compile resources and information for members as well as provide topical discussion spaces. here's the disboard listings for public trans masc oriented servers
