What's the first "big news story" you remember from when you were a kid?
It's something I love to ask mixed-aged groups sometimes because I think it's really interesting to see the responses. I've gotten answers from the Olympics of [whatever year] to Watergate to more recent stuff from my niblings.
My first news thing I remember is the OJ Simpson trial. I vaguely remember watching the news with my grandparents before that, but that's the first story I remember, in part because my second grade teacher had us go play so she could watch the verdict 😂
I remember walking down the street and seeing a sign protesting George W. Bush’s war on Iraq, so I think that.
I remember when Bush Sr had a black eye because his grandchild had thrown a snowball at him. That was when I was three, my parents were talking about it for some reason. The first actually big story I remember was the Oklahoma City Bombing. The picture of the building was on the front page of the paper, and my parents didn’t really want me looking at it. I was 5 for that one.

I love asking people how their parents met. You always get an interesting reply. My best friend’s parents met on the relatively new internet in 1999. My other friend’s parents met at Burger King when one was the manager and the other was a regular customer. My parents met at the beach because they were neighbors in their rental houses, mom was on a church trip and dad was getting blackout drunk every night with his friends next door.
