The 4th of December each year marks World Wildlife Conservation Day. It was started by the US State Department to put a stop to wildlife crimes like shark finning and poaching. Do the next generation a favor and donate to the @WorldWildlifeFund — 100% of your donation will go to funding training and equipment for protectors of wildlife. There is truly no need for shark fin soup. It has no nutritional value or taste. All it is doing is torturing to death an apex creature in the ocean—by 100 million each year (this creature, by the way, is very slow to reproduce). Also, there is nothing magical or medicinal about pangolin's scales and yet this odd anteater is the most trafficked animal in the world. The only thing magical about it is how much it looks like a pine cone. Organizations like the World Wildlife Fund actually make a difference. New research has brought water bears back into the news. According to the study, it turns out that only a few catastrophic events could push these microscopic superheroes to extinction. Those are a supernova that swallows earth, an extreme blast of radiation that would fry the Earth and or a giant asteroid. Impact. Tardigrades, or water bears or moss pigs, are the heartiest lifeforms on Earth. Scientists have discovered their hundred-year-old dried out bodies and reanimated them in a drop of water. What's more is, they've survived the complete vacuum of space and harmful radiation. It's been recently discovered that a protein called Dsup (short for "damage suppressor") sticks to the organism's DNA which acts as a radiation shield. Earlier this year, a scientist at the University of Utah commissioned me to illustrate the various ways that cone snails hunt. It turns out that she's studying the gastropods' toxins—specifically how they use insulin to immobilize their prey. Researchers have found out that the toxin the snails use works incredibly fast. Fight-or-flight response is what happens when we are stressed out and we react to the stress as if it's going to do us harm. The first bycatch was probably just a Neanderthal not realizing that the fish he wanted to spear was just above his own foot, thus making a bycatch of himself. These days, bycatch, or untargeted marine life getting caught, is a horrible part of the fishing industry. It's believed that bycatch can be up to 40% of all the animals dragged out of the ocean. Industrialized fishing takes such a huge bite out of ocean populations. If you're going to eat fish, be sure to check places like Monterey Bay Aquarium's @seafoodwatch — they seem to have a better idea than most about what's ok to eat. Did you know that remoras not only hang around with sharks? You can find them mooching off of whales, sea turtles, manatees, boats and even scuba divers! I'd guess the most exciting thing for these suckers to feed from are sharks, though. Sadly, due to bycatch, overfishing, finning, sport fishing, gill netting, loss of habitat, climate change and other human-related behaviors, shark populations are falling at an incredibly rapid pace. This makes it quite hard for shark-loving remoras to be what they want to be when they grow up. Many elasmobranchs, like sharks, rays and skates, give birth to lives pups. After a disturbing incident, sometimes their babies will be born prematurely, with yolk sacs still attached! Hammerheads give birth to more than a dozen babies in 1 litter (and the great hammerhead shark can birth up to 40), so they must get hungry afterword!
