the thing with the whole "well trans men have male privilege thing" is firstly. literally no. but even if you take the example of the "stealth trans guy who passes extremely well so people see him as a cis guy" is that he still has to hide his identity to access that privilege and if someone finds out hes trans that privilege is most likely to be taken away. so it isnt really privilege.

Hi I'm stealth-ish at work and people see me as a cis man but it means I literally cannot talk about my childhood at all ever, or my body, it means I cannot discuss my concerns about reproduction/childbirth when people ask me if I have or want kids, it means I have to bind all day every day or risk being outed (I would prefer not to because my ribs have some issues), it means a certain brand of asshole will default to viewing me as someone it's acceptable to make unguarded transphobic and misogynistic remarks to and I have to actively tell them to stop, it means I cannot call my endocrinologist during work hours (i.e. times their office is open) unless I go outside where no one can hear me... it's so fucking exhausting actually but I only do it because being open would be even more exhausting. The quickest solution to this is to make someone watch Gattaca and ask them the question: "Did the protagonist have the privilege when they were themselves or did they have to lie and hurt themselves to obtain it? Can someone like them intrinsically have that privilege without needing to mask/hide?" I know that no media/metaphor perfectly relates to real life, but I feel that in this case it's pretty similar. If you have to mask your transness to get at male privilege then YOU don't have a privilege. If transmen could be themselves (including being trans) and have it then yes that would be a privilege. In the current vernacular that is a 'product' which you have had to sign away part of yourself to get at. Surely if transmen have male privilege when they mask that means women could also obtain male privilege by masking. In that case if society assumed that an online creator was a guy would that mean that she would have male privilege?

I think the thing here is that privilege was never actually supposed to be a THING people carry around. It was a word some people coined when they noticed the white women and the black women treated differently in the same workplace (I believe it was whose proposals got grants? But I might be misremembering) and wanted to find words to get at why and avoid the “they just must not work as hard” types of excuses.

“Who has more male privilege? Trans women, who aren’t men and don’t live as men, but who bigots want to be men so their categories don’t go splat? Or trans men, who are and live as men, but who bigots have to insist are women so their categories don’t go splat?” is just plain not the kind of question the term was coined to help us think about.

There is no presumption that trans women OR trans men are more competent or intelligent or capable because of their proximity to maleness. There is no thing about the material (I’ve begun to loathe that word, but it’s the best one I can think of) situation of trans people, no clear disparity between how trans and cis people are treated, that boils down to assumed maleness.

The presumption when someone is known to be trans is that they are freakish and desexed and any gendered thing they do is mimicry or faking.

Snarl is the same kind of thing. Not literal, it’s a tone of voice that serves the same function. It’s raw and gutteral like a hiss, but more savage than vicious. It’s loud, it’s showy, it’s intimidating. It’s very alpha male, big man, look at how fucking dangerous I am. I’ll take ALL of you on. Even if they’re snarling at one person in particular, nobody better back them up or they’re gonna get fucked up too.

Shriek. Come on, seriously? We’ve all heard people shriek either in fear or outrage. High pitched, loud, out of control, feminine. Men can shriek, but it’s funny and emasculating. Think angry italian women throwing pots and pans or ladies on tables who just saw a mouse.

Sneering is contempt whether it’s a facial expression or a tone of voice or both. There are a hundred different ways to sneer with your voice, but it all adds up to the same thing.

I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.

I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society.
