If you live somewhere where your electricity is at risk of a blackout, and if you have the money, BUY A UPS.

UPS stands for Uninterruptable Power Supply, and it's basically a battery with extra steps. You plug it in, you plug your device into it, and it feeds your device electricity from your network and charges its battery while the power is on, and shifts to feeding your device from its battery when you have a blackout. It's great for vulnerable devices, like your PC. If your PC loses power suddenly, it can be damaged in all sorts of ways. I've thankfully only had incidents with drivers breaking (solvable by reinstallation) and a couple corrupted saves in video games, but from my understanding some hardware components can straight up fail in a sudden blackout if you're unlucky. (Laptops are pretty much safe from this, since they have batteries anyway.)

Of course, the battery of a UPS is not infinite, but normally a UPS will warn you with light and/or sound signals when its battery is running out, so that you can turn off your device(s) the normal way, instead of them just losing power suddenly.

So yeah. Buy a UPS. It's very useful.

The moment you think you are immune from this type of backslide into right wing nonsense is the moment you stop questioning yourself enough to keep yourself from backsliding into right wing nonsense a la "I mean im not antiscience, im vaccinated, I just think that fluoride in our water supply is imparting children's ability to learn as fast as they otherwise could without it."

Remember, being progressive means progressing, its about always moving forward. The moment you rest on your laurels and stop putting in effort to keep the progression is the moment you start becoming left behind.

had a friend who used to make new ones up on the spot. The only one that stuck with me was 'good golly jelly beans'. If something catastrophic happens I go for 'that's not ideal.'

This is actually so interesting to read- it’s from 2012 but its full of the same anxieties, even some of the same phrasing that many of the guardian’s later pieces on transness use. really hammers home how much of the terfism that emerged in the late 10s was middle class mothers angry at a loss of control over their adult children- whether that be their bodies or their friends or their opinions- and making that everyone’s problem because they have the power to do so

Never forget how she went and spoke to trans women / trans fems and when she said something that was ignorant (she mentioned the expectation for them to shave), she listened when they corrected her and apologized immediately. Then, when the group explained how they express gender, she went "I understand" and continued to listen and learn.

She's always one of my favorite examples of someone with celebrity status retaining humanity and speaking up for minorities.

I didn't know she was pro Palestine until now, so that makes me even happier to hear.

"all art is political". does not mean. every artist puts political intent into their work. no. the guy drawing dicks on the subway did not intend any deep message by it. HOWEVER. all art. IS political. he chose to draw that dick. for a reason. society shaped what he finds funny. what he finds shocking. the fact he chose to draw a dick at all says something about his society. actually, the fact it is a dick and not a pussy is itself political. we are all. ALL. shaped by our environments. in an alternate universe a woman is drawing a vulva on the wall. and shes saying "TCH! this isnt political. stupid liberals". all art. has political CONTEXT. that is a more specific way to phrase it. because we live in a society. who has access to art? where is the art located? who is the artist? why did they draw that in that specific location. what led to them even having the sharpie they used to draw the dick to begin with. their society shaped their tools! their society shaped their choice of subject! their society shaped the location of their art! but these people are too stupid to understand this. so theyll continue pretending that they are not shaped by their political environment. SAD!
