i like to imagine that, way back in the days of Beacon, yang and ruby had great fun trolling weiss.

because, see, weiss comes from Atlas. and she grew up as one of the inheritors of a massive company, so obviously she's been taught about all the major kingdoms and people of Remnant, because you kind of have to know that stuff if you're expected to one day keep a company expanding. so i hypothesize that she knows that major cities and the general culture of Vacuo and Mistral, even if she's certainly more knowledgeable about Atlesian investors and upper class politics.

however. however. ruby and yang come from Patch. "a small island off the coast of Vale", as yang says in one of the earlier episodes. so i hypothesize that weiss had no idea where the island was or what Patch was like.

and ruby and yang have fun with it.

"don't you ever brush your hair?" weiss asks ruby one day, and the red-haired girl looks at the heiress in polite confusion. "um, not really? we get limited shipments on Patch, and i just couldn't be bothered to ask them to pick up a hairbrush. plus, it would have cost more, and i preferred to get ammunition." (honestly, weiss could believe it.)

"why is coco asking me to steal some weed from you?" "oh, yeah, it's basically a part of the diet of anyone from Patch. it doesn't hit us like it does everyone else - i think it's cause of the fact that we start having it at, like, 5 - so now we add it pretty much all our foods." (weiss is a little scared to fact check this one. she doesn't want to know.)

"why do you always avoid snakes so adamantly?" "oh, didn't you know? in Patch a lot of snakes carry this one parasite that can make humans super sick. we just got into the habit." (actually, yang just really really really hates snakes. but weiss doesn't need to know that.)

weiss is pretty sure that they're trolling her, but she can't confirm it, because there's not a lot of information online about Patch and everyone she asks backs up the sisters without question. (everyone thinks it's funny, and wants to see when weiss will snap.)

Hi everyone! This is an illustrated guide I made as part of my co-admining work at The Middle Eastern Feminist on Facebook! It will be published there shortly.  The technique that is displayed here is a genuine one used in psychology - I forgot the name and couldn’t find it again so if you know about it, feel free to tell me! Some could say: “Yes but you can use that technique for instances of harassment other than Islamophobic attacks!”, and my reply is: Sure! Please do so, it also works for other “types” of harassment of a lone person in a public space!! However I’m focusing on protecting Muslims here, as they have been very specific targets lately, and as a French Middle Eastern woman, I wanted to try and do something to raise awareness on how to help when such things happen before our eyes - that way one cannot say they “didn’t know what to do”!  I’d like to insist on two things: 1) Do not, in any way, interact with the attacker. You must absolutely ignore them and focus entirely on the person being attacked! 2) Please make sure to always respect the wishes of the person you’re helping: whether they want you to leave quickly afterwards, or not! If you’re in a hurry escort them to a place where someone else can take over - call one of their friends, or one of yours, of if they want to, the police. It all depends on how they feel! For my fellow French-speakers: I will translate it in French and post it on my page as soon as I can :) Please don’t hesitate to share this guide as it could push a lot of people to overcome bystander syndrome!! namely, the confrontation between RWBY and Salem in volume 7.

i loved the scene. i did not fully appreciate the scene until 5 min ago.

like, salem is going for max intimidation here. and then this little fucking seventeen-year-old nuisance out intimidates her with "we don't need to kill you to stop you. and we will stop you."

salem's immediate response? a yo-mama comment. zero hesitation. instant psychic damage.

it's just. so funny. immortal woman beefing with a seventeen-year-old. immortal woman dealing out a "yo mama" card so good it instantly triggers a breakdown.

I cannot even explain how ANGRY I am at this.

My nephew is very allergic to eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, and sesame. Last year my sister discovered all hot dogs and hamburger buns now contain sesame. Not "may contain", but listed in the ingredients. This year basically every brand of sliced bread also now contains sesame, making it very difficult to find bread items he can eat.

They're just adding it to their products, so they can just list it as an ingredient and not bother with worrying about cross contamination. And they aren't even bothering with telling anyone. Capitalism is going to kill us all.

sometimes I’m reminded that there are still people who don’t know ao3 was literally created by incest shippers — and the site’s sole purpose is to 1. be completely against censorship and 2. host all kinds of dark, taboo fics that are banned on other platforms — and the first ever fic that was posted on ao3 was a fic about an incest ship from supernatural.

you are in the house that was created by freaks. for freaks (affectionate). every disgusting thing you can think of is rightfully allowed and welcomed on ao3, because they are exactly the reasons why ao3 was created in the first place.

ao3 was created because its creators got tired of censorship, they got tired of dark and taboo fics getting banned on pro-censorship platforms, and they wanted a place that was safe for ALL FICS THAT WERE DARK AND TABOO.

ao3’s main principle is being against censorship and being proship / profic.

there are some things in fiction that make me uncomfortable, but instead of shaming people who are just minding their own business and not harming anyone in real life, I choose to curate my own internet experience by blocking/muting what I don’t want to see. ao3 has excellent tagging system, so instead of being a bitch, use their tagging system properly and you won’t see the things you don’t want to see.

it’s your job to curate what you see. it’s not other people’s jobs or responsibilities to censor themselves for your personal comfort. the world does not revolve around you.

also you cannot censor “only the things you personally hate” without expecting everything else, that isn’t of conservative beliefs, to be censored too. because censorship is a slippery slope and a fascist tool. I promise you there are people who think “why do tags for queer love even exist on ao3? they’re grooming children”.

if you allow the things that you hate to be censored — because someone with enough power gets to control what other people can and cannot create/consume, it will not stop at the things that you hate.

was thinking about RWBY again - in wake of volume 10 being officially greenlit - and i happened upon a realisation of the difference between Ruby and Yang that might explain something of their differing opinions and attitudes in volume 7 and onwards.

now, please keep in mind that i haven't watched the series in a while, so this is mostly going off of what i remember.

so, in RWBY volume 4, the team is split up and going their separate ways. Weiss is with her family, Blake is going to her family, Yang is with her dad...and Ruby is walking towards Haven with Jaune and Nora and Ren. now, in this volume, there are quite a few realisations and growth opportunities for the team. Weiss ends up leaving her family legacy behind entirely, Blake understands and chooses to fight for the White Fang as they used to be, and Yang finally abandons her chase of Raven.

and Ruby's just...marching on. which is a terrible coping mechanism, but well, that is kind of a staple of her character.

now this is all well and good, HOWEVER, what i specifically want to talk about in this volume is the contrast between Yang and Ruby's paths.

in previous volumes, we're kind of encouraged to see Yang as the more worldly of the two sisters. she goes clubbing and has tons of friends; Ruby, contrarily, is more introverted and far more comfortable with weapons than people. so this paints a picture of Yang as more immersed in the criminal underworld, while Ruby is more naive and positive and unaware of the more sinister underbelly of Vale.

HOWEVER this is flipped in Volume 4, and i find it really interesting.

because while Yang was previously shown to be the more worldly of the sisters, in this volume, she's the one who stays home while Ruby disappears towards Haven. she's with her dad, in a safe place, and haunted by one individual who did something absolutely horrific to her - but it's just one person who's haunting her.

Ruby, on the other hand, is traveling through the country just after a devastating attack on Vale and Beacon. so Ruby is now the more worldly of the two sisters - she's seeing bandit attacked villages that have no survivors, and villages that are being attacked by Grimm with no huntsmen to help. and she, Jaune, Ren, and Nora are doing this entirely alone. even when Qrow shows up, he's injured, and ultimately becomes a burden on the kids as they have to now carry him and look for medicine before he dies.

even when they get to Haven, there isn't any hope. Leo is a coward, and a traitor, and almost succeeds in helping Salem win.

so i think that this is a very interesting dichotomy between Ruby and Yang. the so-called 'worldly' sister has been shown one horrible person, and although she understands that there is a criminal underground, she hasn't really been personally impacted by it. Ruby, on the other hand, has been witness to entire villages being destroyed or coming under threat of destruction, as well as being personally betrayed by an authority figure who she was meant to be able to trust.

now, they've been switched. Yang is now more sheltered, Ruby more exposed to what humanity can be like.

then it comes to Volume 7. when Ironwood asks them whether the lamp is able to be used, and Ruby lies. Yang doesn't agree with this, nor does Blake - which is where the differences between the sisters really comes into play. because Ruby, now, is intimately aware that she can't actually trust anyone, and is very clearly wary of trusting Ironwood after seeing the state that Mantle is in. Yang, on the other hand, is still a bit sheltered despite everything that's happened to her, and doesn't have Ruby's experience with betrayal.

i'm not entirely sure what conclusion to come to here, but i just thought it was very interesting how, ultimately, Yang is the more sheltered one while Ruby, despite her initial naivete, has actually seen more of what humanity is like.
