Hey, just wanna say, as someone who knows far to much about the horrors air warfare from WW2 onwards, the idea to make warplanes literal dragons fucks bigly on a symbolic level. Yeah, the big planes that wipe out human life in indiscriminate fire, rained from above, should be seen as monstrous! That's not cool that this is a thing that exists!
My grandfather worked in aerospace during the war. He took me on a tour of an American aircraft carrier once, when I was very young. I thought it was conceptually pretty neat. It had places and things I recognized like water fountains and a cafeteria and bunk beds.
I live somewhere with lots of predatory birds. I still enjoy sitting out by the lake and watching the perigrine absolutely annihilate ducks. Redtail hawks are way bigger than you think they are.
But I remember heading up to the deck and seeing a decommissioned gulf war era combat aircraft. I think it was an old F4 Phantom II. It had dead missiles still loaded onto the wingjacks for display. I knew what combat aircraft were but I think I was young enough that part of my conception of this object was "dragon".
It's the curves yk. They look upsettingly organic in real life. Biologically predatory. Like they're suddenly gonna stand up and walk away on their landing gear.
The concept of a warplane is so depraved to me. It's a flying machine for killing people, a physical manifestation of wanton, mechanized, imperial violence. Yet distant and impersonal. Few things are more deserving of the term "monsterous".
Be furious.
Be absolutely enraged.
May each of their memories fuel this revolution. May their homeland live on. We must never stop. For them.
Worship her, or perish like the others!

*sighs* and i thought Johnny Cash was the one thing the whole country could agree on. the conservatives liked the melodies and the liberals liked the lyrics. guess not
Nah. This is paying mad homage to him. I think a guy who released live chickens into the audience at a show and ruined the plumbing in a hotel by flushing cherry bombs down the toilet would think this is the funniest thing ever. If there is one thing Johnny Cash loved more than telling the tales of rural America, it’s criminal mischief.
Johnny was a hero of mine. He was invited to perform at the White House and he looked Nixon dead in the eye and sang protest songs to him.
When other artists of his generation were scoffing at my generation's music, he was covering Nine Inch Nails while terminally ill.
There are a thousand stories about Johnny Cash. It's believed he was the first American to know that Stalin was dead. He accidentally killed the condors when his engine started a forest fire. He vowed to wear all black until there was justice on Earth, and he died wearing black.
But the most salient thing of all to me is that this is a man who, at the height of his fame, gave free concerts to prisoners. That photo of him giving the finger? He's giving it to a guard at Folsom Prison in front of the assembled prison population.
Yeah, I think Johnny would have thought this was funny as hell.
objectively funny crimes, etc

Reading about how intersex athletes have been treated is so fucking horrible. The countless lies and human rights violations. The discrimination and how it's ruined the lives of so many people is so awful. There has been no apologies from any athletics comptetions or organizations. They have blood on their hands. Just a tw for intersexism and mental health issues and suicide in the next paragraph because it can get pretty heavy.
Annet Negesa, who was a middle distance runner. She was suddenly barred from competing due to her hormones. No one told her why. She was then told she needed to take medication to lower her testosterone, then what she was told was switched. She was lied to about a surgery that she was told was like an injection and would let her compete again. She woke up with scars and had had a gonadectomy. That violation of basic human rights and medical ethics combined with inadequate postsurgical care basically ended her career. She deserves justice. She deserves apologies from the Olympics and everyone single doctor who was involved in it, and compensation and the promise that it should never have happened and will never happen again. She. Needs. Justice.
Pratima Gaonkar needs justice. She was a rising track and field star. After forced sex verificatiom she killed herself. The way media and news treated her after her death was disgusting. She deserves and needs justice. Her family deserves justice.
Santhi Soundarajan had her medals stripped and was treated as an outcast after forced sex verification showed she had androgen insensitivity syndrome. She was treated as an outcast, her gender was mocked. She's spoken out about how much discrimination she's faced, and how badly she's been treated. She now works as a coach, but was barred from competing. She deserves justice.
Caster Semenya deserves justice. Francine Niyonsaba deserves justice. Margaret Wambui deserves justice. Barbra Banda deserves justice. Beatrice Masilingi and Christine Mboma deserve justice.
The racism and intersexism and horrible human rights violations and medical abuse these women have faced for the supposed crime of being intersex and good at a sport is horrible. They deserve justice, but the organizations that perpetuate these atrocities don't seem to care. It's so fucking horrible.
Hey. HEY. Everyone listen up.
There is a common thread besides intersexism here, too. They are all people of colour. Take note.
The IOC doesn't just have a biology problem.

i think all quiet on the western front and the lord of the rings are in direct conversation with each other, as in theyre the retelling of the same war with one saying here’s what happened, we all died, and it did not matter at all and another going hush little boy, of course we won, of course your friends came back
someone should remake lord of the rings as a grandfather telling a fantasy story to his grand child with flashbacks to world war one showing the dead boys and men the characters were based on. grandpa why didn’t they just fly. because they didn’t. they didn’t.
i’m fine
I will never get over how Tolkien & Lewis took the horrors of war and spun them into fantasy.
Shivering in the trenches dreaming of cozy hobbit holes, shaking as bombs pockmark a forest and imagining each shallow mud-filled crater contains a new world—that maybe there are still as many beautiful things in the universe as there are bombs—that maybe the world is bigger than this moment and this ugliness and one day this will be a peaceful forest again full of small ponds.
I mean look at these photos of the shell craters in Sanctuary Woods, near Ypres Belgium and tell me it’s not the Wood Between The Worlds:
…oh.
Having someone match your wit or your weirdness without hesitation is actually so fucking comforting and fun.
“Mean girls all grow up to be nurses!”
“Mean girls all go into social work!”
“The mean girl to teacher pipeline!”
Y’all, these are just pink collar jobs. The reason you think there’s so many “mean girls” in these fields is because they’re all like 97% women. Of course some of them are gonna be assholes. There’s assholes everywhere.
We get it. Your job isn’t like other girls’ jobs. It’s a cool job.
it’s true that there are some incredibly cruel people in all of these professions.
it’s also true that they all suffer from chronic underpayment, overwork, lack of institutional support, and insane bureaucratic demands that would make them fail the people in their care all the time even if every single one was a saint.
That’s absolutely missing the point.
While those are all “helper” professions and they very much are pink collar (and are underpaid, that’s not an incompatible idea), they’re also ones that involve power over vulnerable people’s lives. (And I’ve only encountered it as a comparison to, say, male bullies becoming cops, it’s not like men aren’t being mentioned here.)
Secretaries/administrative assistants aren’t on that list for a reason. Flight attendants aren’t on that list. Housecleaners aren’t on that list. Receptionists. Customer service representatives. Dental hygienists. The people who style hair or do nails. That’s not a list of pink collar jobs. It’s specifically (pink collar) positions where if you want to abuse people you’re relatively likely to get away with it.
It can both be true that “nurses who care for disabled people need better pay” and “nurses who care for disabled people have a lot of opportunities to abuse their power and that’s something worth talking about.”
Women aren’t immune from treating people badly because they’re women, or because women are underpaid. They’re sure not immune from specifically seeking out jobs that will allow them to be cruel without any consequences to them, if they get personal satisfaction out of being cruel.
You are trying to shut down a conversation about abuse.
Shitty people are attracted to positions of power. That includes working class women!
There have been a lot of studies about hazing and abuse in nursing communities and even murder!
My mother is a nurse, her co-workers sit around laughing about the people who fall out of their wheel chairs, about the nurses who do cry when someone dies, my mother has ignored patients crying out in pain in order to drink her coffee.
My mother has intentionally let elderly patients at her nursing home die. She has abused them and she has laughed about it. She has left people suffering and has caused that suffering.
Nurses are underpaid and they are disrespected as medical professionals who aren’t a doctor. That’s true and we should talk about that, but we can not ignore the fact that violent women seek out these jobs with God Complexes and the intent to do harm.
Sure, that harm might be because they are bitter, over-worked, and disrespected. None the less, it is no different than when a male doctor causes purposeful harm to his patient.
Nurses contribute to eugenics, to patient abuse, elder abuse, and yeah even child abuse (my mother was proficient in all of them!)
Here are some important articles to read:
Nurses Eat Their Young An article about hazing and bullying among nurses. The title comes from a common saying in medical circles, the first time I heard it, it was in reference to my mother’s best friend who had poured coffee over the hands of a new nurse who had reported another nurse to a superior for abusing a patient.
Bullying in Nursing – Why The Hazing is Getting Worse A brief article on forms of hazing.
Nurse hazing: a costly reality
Why do nurses abuse patients? Reflections from South African obstetric services
Patients’ lives being left at mercy of abusive nurses
Every single one of these articles, with exception of the last – which is guardian article – is a professionally published medical article.

sometimes people try to tell me that scientists are paragons of rationality and I have to break it to them that I have yet to work in a lab that didn’t have at least one weird secret shrine in it
new guy: why is all of the equipment in this room covered in toys?
me: dONn’t touch those
new guy:
me: they need the toys to function. if they don’t all have toys they get jealous.
new guy:
new guy:
me: when something breaks just take the wizard and wave it around for a while. they seem to like that.
Science is rational, scientists are human.
In Taiwan we have a special brand of snacks named 乖乖 (literally means “well behaved” but in a casual way like when one’s compliment a child or a pet of being good) that has green package.
It has become the lucky charm in the IT industry because engineers believe it will make machine acting good (like the name of the snack) and stay in green light (like the color of the snack’s package) when a 乖乖 is put on top of a server.
It is the only food allowed in a server room and the biggest semicondoctor company in Taiwan (which is also the biggest worldwide) even commissioned the snack factory to make a customized version with blessing on the package.
This is how a server room is blessed by 乖乖. You put at least one on top of each server. It’s important that the engineers change them before the expire date because legend says the snack looses it’s power after expire date.
You’ll hear engineers swearing up and down that their server room crushed down the one time they forgot to change the snack. Or some newbie ate the forbidden snack put on top of their server and caused a disastrous crush down.
The 乖乖 religion later spread to all people who want their machine to act nice. In the lab we put 乖乖 on ultra-low freezer (you really don’t want it to drop dead along with your 2 years’ worth of sample/data), mass spectrometer etc.
When Taiwan’s about to launch the first self made satellite in 2017, the develop team even put 乖乖 around the satellite model to prey for a successful launch (it did). This shit is real.
