every day I learn bot comments on ao3 are stooping lower and lower

anyway if you get a comment like this, chances are that they are bot and their goal is to do whatever it takes to get you to delete your work, most certainly (from what I’ve heard) it’s because they want to “safely” steal your work, use it to train their ai without you being able to rightfully claim ownership of your work since “there’s no proof that the work was stolen/was posted elsewhere first by you” because the original source has already been deleted.

THEY ARE ALL BOTS. at first it was “ao3 is deleting fics and your entire account will be affected unless you delete the fics yourself” then it was “this work contains contents that are illegal and they have already reported you and your fic to the police” (yes, that’s how desperate these bots are), and now it’s this.

report their comments to ao3 for spam—in this case, specifically, I think you may be able to report them for harassment too—and don’t pay attention to them, most importantly don’t delete your works, don’t feel discouraged by their comments. remember that they are bots and they mass comment something like this on people’s works at random to get people to delete their works. (or even if they’re not bot, they are still pathetic bullies who don’t deserve your time or attention.)

Ao3 Commission Comments

We have all seen them at this point, we all hate them. Few things are worse than the excitement of comment! morphing into the bitter disappointment of capitalism. And some people say they’re spam, or bits, or well-meaning idiots, but I’m here to tell you it doesn’t matter! The content of the comment is in fact a violation of the archive’s terms of service, specifically section two, subsection c:

II.C. Commercial Promotion

Promotion, solicitation, and advertisement of commercial products or activities are not allowed.

These comments specific violation is further elucidated in the Archive FAQ, with this section being the most pertinent, as it is explicitly about section II.C. I have taken the liberty of pulling the most directly relevant points for this post, but feel free to read the whole thing.

What kinds of things are considered "promotion, solicitation, and advertisement of commercial products or activities"? […skipping over other answers…] offering paid commissions […], advertising a paid service or product [etc].

Next question, does this apply to the comment section? To the readers as well as the authors? Yes!

Content is anything that you post on AO3 or otherwise submit to us. This includes, but is not limited to: […] comments […]

So we have established that the art commission comments are inherently a violation of the archives policy. Awesome!

What do we do about it? Report! Report! Report!

Here’s how (note that all images are without alt text because they are screenshots of exactly what the body of the post is saying to do, no information is being withheld, but rather I am sparing a screen reader user from listening to the same words twice, mwah):

Step One: Get Link

Not the twink, the web link. There are multiple ways to do this. The easiest way in my opinion is to open that email that initially broke your heart and click the second interaction option “go to the thread starting from this comment”

This will take you directly to the comment! Right on its own little web page, as you can see below. Go team!

Step two: Report Comment

So now that we are on the page, scroll on down to the bottom, and click the report button, which I have circled in the screenshot below.

If you are logged in, and on the comments isolated page as directed, almost the entire form auto-populates! I have blocked out my email, but otherwise this is how the form shows up.

All we have to do is fill out two fields, which I have labeled in the screenshot.

Please note you must scroll past the form FAQ to reach the form. If you don’t see it when you hit the report button, just keep scrolling!

Fields to fill:

1. Summary of violation:

Here I little just write “paid content” or “commission comment.” You’re not writing an essay, just directing the report to the right people.

2. Description:

Now if this was a more complicated situation, we would want to give a more detailed description, but (un)fortunately this is cut and dry. Just basically repeat what you put in the summary box.

Step three: Hit submit, and move on with your day!

The policy and abuse team will take it from there, including deleting the offending comment after review! You should get an automated email confirming your report was submitted nearly instantly. Please do not submit the form again, the team is on it, and extra tickets just clog the queue!

Have a great day, and remember: commercial action on ao3? Report that shit!

Adding onto this to say: don't be afraid to report spam for fear of it being annoying to the abuse team.

I used to work on a team dedicated to investigating reports of spam emails coming from our servers. Abuse complaints are either super quick and easy, or actually interesting to investigate. They were my favorite ticket to deal with. Also, I would much rather know there's a problem and have data points to track it (via reports) than have users not report at all. Data leads to patterns which leads to better tools to prevent future spam.

So I found out a childhood home I once lived in that was built by my great great grandfather was haunted by him, only problem for me is that i don't remember ANY paranormal activity, if any at all, ever happening to me, unlike my parents and other adult's. My parents, who, according to them, have (separately confirmed) told me that if you were walking or driving up the driveway, you'd see an upward standing coffin in the living room window and that there was the stereotypical haunted stuff like flickering lights and cabinet doors being open and shut.

I'm actually a solid beliver of the paranormal and supernatural bc theres just this vibe I get sometimes followed with things i've exspiranced and heard from other's that can't be explained from a logical and scientific viewpoint and while i'd typically call bullshit on this bc my parents will fuck with me here and there on occasions, but my dad isn't fond of speaking of paranormal or supernaturally stuff, like at all.

He absolutely hates it and doesn't watch or talk about anything paranormal or supernatural horror like me or my mom would, so him actually telling me this, and my mom separately confirming this makes me believe them on this. But again, I don't remember anything ever happening to me in the house since it just felt like home ig? It could've been a combination of my childhood innocence and ignorance, but still, I don't remember having any odd vibes about the place.
