fucked up how cooking and baking from scratch is viewed as a luxuryâŚ..like baking a loaf of bread or whatever is seen as something that only people with money/time can do. Iâm not sure why capitalism decided to sell us the idea that we canât make our own damn food bc itâs a special expensive thing thatâs exclusive to wealthy retirees but itâs stupid as hell and it makes me angry
bread takes like max 4 ingredients counting water and sure it takes a couple hours but 80% of that is just waiting around while it does the thing and you can do other things while itâs rising/baking plus im not gonna say baking cured my depression bc it didnât but man is it hard to feel down when youâre eating slices of fresh bread you just made yourself. feels like everythingâs gonna be a little more ok than you thought. itâs good.
bread is amazing and itâs also been sold to us as something really hard to make? Every time I tell someone I made a loaf of bread I get reactions like âyou made it yourself???â and âdo you have a bread machine then?â
I havenât touched a bread machine in probably 10 years.
You CAN make your own bread, folks, and itâs actually pretty cheap to do so. I believe the most expensive thing I needed for it was the jar of yeast. It was about $6 at the grocery store and lasted me MONTHS (just keep it in the fridge.) The packets are even cheaper.
destroy capitalism. bake your own bread.
You can also make your own yeast by making a sourdough starter, so that cuts cost even more.
But you have to feed the starter daily/weekly and that means it grows quickly, but there are tons of recipes online for what to do with your excess starter. Cookies, pretzels, crackers, pancakes, waffles, you name it!!
Make it even easier - âNo-Knead Breadâ. All YOU do is mix the ingredients together and wait until itâs time to heat the oven. The yeast does all the rest.
Hereâs @dduaneââs first take on it and the finished product. Weâve made even more photogenic batches since.
Kneading is easy as well; either let your machine do it, or if you donât want to or donât have one, get hands-on. Itâs like mixing two colours of Plasticine to make a third. Flatten, stretch, fold, half-turn, repeat - it takes about 10 minutes - until the gloopy conglomeration of flour, yeast, salt and water that clings to your hands at the beginning, becomes a compact ball that doesnât stick to things and feels silky-smooth.
Hereâs what before and after look like.
My Mum used to say that if you were feeling out of sorts with someone, it was good to make bread because you could transfer your annoyance into kneading the dough REALLY WELL, and both you and the bread would be better for it.
Then you put it into a bowl, cover it with cling-film and let it rise until it doubles in size, turn it out and âknock it backâ (more kneading, until itâs getting back to the size it started, this means there wonât be huge âis something living in here?â holes in the bread), put it into your loaf-tin or whatever - weâve used a regular oblong tin, a rectangular Pullman tin with a lid, a small glass casserole, an earthenware chicken roasterâŚ
You can even use a clean terracotta flowerpot.
Let the dough rise again until itâs high enough to look like an unbaked but otherwise real loaf, then pop it in the preheated oven. On average we give ours 180°C / 355°F for 45-50 minutes. YM (and oven) MV.
Hereâs some of our breadâŚ
Hereâs our default bread recipe - it takes about 3-4 hours from flour jar to cutting board depending on climate (warmer is faster) most of which is rise time and baking; hands-on mixing, kneading and knocking-back is about 20 minutes, tops, and less if using a mixer.
Here ( or indeed any of the other pics) is the finished product. This one was given an egg-wash to make it look glossy and keep the poppy-seeds in place; mostly we donât bother with that or the slash down the middle, but all the extras were intentional as a âready for my close-upâ glamour shot.
I think any shop would be happy to have something this good-looking on their shelf. Weâre happy to have it on our table.
Even if your first attempts donât work out quite as well as you hope, you can always make something like thisâŚ
I think the reason a lot of leftists struggle with disability justice is that they haven't moved past the concept that discrimination isn't bad because it's objectively "wrong." yes, sexists are objectively wrong when they try to claim women are dumber than men. yes, antisemites are objectively wrong that jewish people are inherently greedy and run the state. yes, racists are wrong when they try to claim that white people are the superior race. and so on.
but then with disabled people, there are a lot of objective truths to the discrimination we face. people with IDs/LDs do fall behind and struggle with certain concepts. physically disabled people are often weaker and less capable of performing demanding tasks than able bodied people. many of us with mental illnesses are more reckless and less responsible. a lot of us are dependent on others and do not contribute much "worth".
and guess what? disabled people still deserve a place in the world. disabled people still deserve the supports they need. because they are people, and that should be enough to support them and believe they deserve a place at the table.
if your only rebuttal against discrimination is its objective inaccuracies, you are meeting bigots where they are at. you are validating the very concept that if and when people are truly incapable of being equal to the majority, that means they are worth less. this causes some leftists to then try to deny the objective realities of disabled people and/or become ableist themselves.
your rallying behind marginalized groups should start and end with the fact that people are completely worthy of life and equity, because they are fellow human beings and that should, frankly, be enough.
The Nazi Israeli army began sweeping, destroying and bombing buildings on a very large scale, using weapons that we have never heard of before and that are very strange, as shown in the picture.
The Israeli incursion into the heart of Gaza City has forced countless families to flee south, leaving behind their homes, memories, and everything they hold dear. Imagine over 2 million people crammed into an area smaller than 40 kilometers, struggling to survive under constant bombardment. Streets that were once filled with life are now ruins; hospitals are overwhelmed, and basic necessities are scarce. Children are terrified, families are torn apart, and nowhere feels safe. This is not a battle it is collective punishment, a humanitarian nightmare unfolding in real time, and the world cannot turn away.
Map of Gaza City:
đť Blue: Fully controlled by Israeli forces
đť Red: Almost fully controlled by Israeli forces
đť Green: Currently under heavy fire, with many displaced people and civilians inside
đť Remaining areas: Where most of the remaining civilians are located

Not all these movies are necessarily good, but the ones that gave me small pop culture epiphanies. It made me realize that 30%-40% of the jokes from modern sitcoms are references/parodies- and these movies are their source material.

When I was a child, I was hurt: on terminology creep and the use of the terms pedo/pedophilia in fandom
When I was a child, pedophile used to mean someone who was sexually attracted to specifically pre-pubescent children. My uncle is and was a pedophile who hurt a lot of kids, not just me.Â
I didn't remember my abuse because I was too young, but a lot of my cousins remember theirs. Talking about that abuse with people has always been hard for us, because it often triggers other people just to hear about the experiences that we went through. People, from doctors to anyone who has known a child, understand that surviving that sort of thing at ten or younger is very different than surviving that sort of thing at sixteen, which is why the term pedophilia is important. It's an ugly thing, yes, but it's necessary for survivors to be able to talk about what happened to us.Â
"Pedophilia" describes a very specific type of abuse.
Or it used to.Â
At some point it started to slowly mean "anyone who has sex with someone under 18"--that was the first change. It was so slow and gradual even I could not even tell you when it happened.
But now? The last ten years or so? Oh, buddy. Forget pedophilia having a certain meaning, it can now be levied even at two adults in a relationship with as little as a five-year age gap. Or, worse (for me), the idea of minor-coding.Â
Y'all do realize that adult-coding is the transverse of that, right? Minor-coding cannot be allowed to exist for this reason; men already talk about adult-coding with even 11 year olds girls looking 'old enough' once their body develops and children of color are already being treated older just because of the color of their skin.
There are real consequences to the idea of someone being minor-coded, so far beyond the harm being done to them by being infantilized. "Minor-coding" exists by propping up ideas that are exclusively and explicitly harmful.
So maybe... maybe we need to let pedophilia actually be about kids again?
That is, if kids are people you care about and want to be safe. Because right now? It's not about survivors. Right now the omnipresence and watering down of pedophile is making it harder for survivors because the thing in the spotlight is the fears of people who've haven't suffered this particular harm.
The spotlight needs to be on survivors, not spectators. Please, I am begging y'all. Survivors need this.
hey now @mistlovesxcas, do not use my trauma to justify your fucked up opinions.
you need to know that these tags are all kinds of fucked up:
i support proshippers and proshipping because that shit is FICTIONAL. it ain't real, plain and simple.
y'all need to learn the difference between fiction, which harms no one and helps people process intense feelings in a healthy way, and reality, where real harm can be done and never taken back.
shipping is telling ourselves stories. it's not real.
saying it causes harm is equating fiction to my actual real life trauma that happened.... and that's really really really really REALLY fucked up!!
don't do it! if you are doing it, stop doing it right the fuck now! it always leads to censorship of survivors. that's right, if nobody gets to ever discuss anything to do with pedophilia, the ability to discuss our actual experiences fucking disappears. and for who? the people most affected.
there are real consequences to anti-proshippers' crusade against fiction and i am the person who will be impacted by those consequences first.
this is why i always speak out in support of people being able to write fiction about whatever the fuck they want. not only is it the right thing to do, because fiction helps everyone process big complex scary shit, but it also affects me directly.
i would be hurting myself if i didn't support peoples' ability to write all kinds of fucked up fiction, because it would be removing my own ability to write about surviving.
Some creepy assholes looking for a chance to sexually exploit teens kept using "um actually it's called ephebophilia" to defend their efforts to lower the age of consent.
While their goal was wrong, they were right that the term is different and the distinction can be important.
You're completely right! We can't let creepy assholes be the reason why survivors don't have language to describe our experiences properly. It's very important for survivors to be allowed to be more important than the people who hurt us.
I'm going to use this as a place to catalog responses that aren't getting reblogged as much but are just as important as this thread:
My experience is atypical + "What do we call them if not pedos?"
Age of consent has nothing to do with this + "I am not a soapbox for you to stand on."
Education about what sexual child abuse looks like online + "we're reading fiction for escapism, thank you very much, and we are so, so very tired of all you pedophilia-obsessed folks reminding us of the real thing"
Thank you so much to everyone who has been supportive in the tags or in replies, especially @prismatic-bell, whose replies have been delightfully concise and are representative of my personal point of view.
If you want to help survivors, openly write and read fucked up fiction as often as you feel the urge.
It doesn't matter what you read/write, or why. The act of doing it openly provides a level of plausible deniability for people whose relationship to the fucked up things is more complicated.
Other people letting their freak flag fly and writing the most weird and/or traumatic shit they can think of? That is supporting me and every other survivor out there because it gives us a place to start in trauma that isn't ours. You know--the reason why it's easy to clean your friend's house but hard to clean your own.
In summary: Survivors benefit from people who aren't survivors writing fucked up fic, so if that's a thing you're interested in, you can do your part.
I'd also like to point out that in all my time in fandom, I have never seen an actual pedophilic ship.
Ephebephilic ships, yes. Child sexual abuse, described as a terrible thing, not as a romantic ship, yes. But I have never seen a sexual relationship between an adult and a pre-pubescent described in romantic terms. That's abuse and people who write about it know it's abuse and treat it as abuse.
I'm sure that somewhere, someone has done it; rule 34, after all. But the vast, vast majority of the ships that the antis went after were adults with older teens, or very young adults with younger teens. Neither of these are pedophilia. Are they good? No. Are they abusive? If there's an age gap bigger than a Romeo and Juliet clause and one of them's underage, then yes, in real life they would be. But the antis did enormous damage -- which this post is pushing back against -- by trying to claim that a 17 year old and an 18 year old is pedophilia, or that a 25 year old and a 72 year old is pedophilia, or a short adult woman with a tall adult man is pedophilia. None of these things are even wrong! Adults over the age of consent can do what they want and it'd be ridiculous if two 17 year olds suddenly couldn't date anymore because one hit their birthday and the other one's birthday is half a year away.
The fact that someone came on this post to say, "and yeah, pro shippers are causing this problem" is the problem. I know of no pro shippers whatsoever who actually want to see pedophilic ships. Which, again, as the OP reminds us, are ships between a pre-pubescent child and an adult. This grosses out almost everyone. (Again. It's gotta exist somewhere, and maybe it even exists written or drawn by someone who thinks it's romantic and not an edgelord trying to trigger people because they think it's funny. But I've never seen it and I've been in fandom for 30 years.) Pro-shippers believe that if people want to write that, they can, because fiction does not harm people the way that antis think it does, but I don't know anyone who actually does write that or wants to see it.
Antis have been watering down the term by claiming that ships are pedophilic when they aren't even ephebephilic. If both parties are over the age of consent, no one would have the right to stop them from being involved with each other in real life (though we may side-eye the 40 year old dating a 25 year old, but as long as the 25 year old consents, that's legal and allowed.) If both parties are within 4 years of each other, most jurisdictions consider it legal even if one's under the age of consent. These ships aren't even considered illegal or morally wrong in real life. They aren't pedophilia. (Nor is a 16 year old with a 40 year old; that's illegal in a lot of places and I definitely consider it morally wrong, but that's typically the closest to "pedophilia" I see ships ever get, and that's ephebephilia. Which is still bad, but a different thing from pedophilia.)
This is technically what's known as "clowning on someone's post." Claiming you agree with the point, and then indicating in your response or the tags that actually you agree with the exact opposite of the point, which is what's known as "not agreeing", is just... a shitty thing to do, people. Stop it.
[image: Tumblr tag: #other thing I feel is watering down the severeity of pedophilia abuse is normalising it by pro shippers]
.
hey, y'all want to know some other groups who often get called pedophiles? no you don't, because it should not be happening, nobody should be calling anybody that except in the specific case of adults attracted to pre-pubescent children. like, I don't even think that word should describe people who sexually abuse children regardless of whether or not they're sexually attracted to them, we already have the more precise and more accurate term "sexual abuser of children" for that.
but if you don't know this yet then you need to:
we get called pedophiles for being queer people existing near children.
we get called pedophiles for being trans people existing near children.
we get called pedophiles for being people writing certain sorts of fiction and labeling them as for adults only.
we get called pedophiles for being in a romantic and/or sexual relationship with another informed and enthusiastically consenting adult whose disability is one of the ones people love to infantilize.
et fucking cetera.
it's a truly wonderful accusation, really. anyone who hasn't trained themself out of this reaction stops thinking about facts and motivations at once, because that's such an abhorrent thought. one cannot help but recoil from the one it's associated with. easy one-hit reputation-killer to throw at anybody one thinks should be much less popular.
My favorite type of Death Note takes is when people are like "L should've just taken the chance and kill Light because -" and then start spouting Kira's rhetoric word for word. Second favorite is "Light was so stupid/evil. If I had the death note - ". Alright, man.
Me @ those "Eat The Rich/Light should've killed the billionaires" fucks.
Light Yagami did kill powerful people in the manga - the Yotsuba shitheads. Not only that,but he "ended wars" and the fucking POTUS was afraid of Kira. If Light only killed small time criminals,no one that powerful would care about that murderer;
"Light was wrong to kill the people he deemed bad,he should've killed the people I deem bad" isn't the own those people think it's.
In general, there seems to be a misunderstanding that Light assumes "evil person" = "lawbreaker". He doesn't! He doesn't start killing non-violent criminals because he thinks they're unredeemable, he starts killing them to save his own ass because he has no other options with L watching his every move. He also states during his first conversation with Ryuk that he's not going to only kill criminals. We are even told that Kira spares those who killed in self-defense, had circumstances that can excuse their actions or showed regret for what they had done. I'm not saying that Light doesn't have a misguided and simplified view of the problem of crime - he does! But it's in the same way a lot of people do. And he did think through how he was going to go about this.
Maybe Light doesn't get credit for the fact that he did the things people say he should have done because we see how he turns out and we see how it all becomes more and more about him. But the whole point is that it was always going to end like this. Light's biggest mistake wasn't how he chose to use the death note - it's that he chose to keep using the death note in the first place. It's an almost unlimited power to kill people without any consequences. There is no good or correct way to use it.
Cheek: a round dull pain that clocks your entire head in a different direction. Itâs painful and throbs but the main effect of a punch to the cheek is how jarring it is. You feel it in your mouth, your teeth. And no matter how you position that punch the knuckles will always hit the jaw and cheek bones adding a frame of sharp pain in which the redness will be painted.
Temple: getting hit on the temple pushes your head to the side rather than turning it. Itâs disorienting because it leaves you very off balance. It essentially feels like a bad pressure headache, like when you have a sinus infection on a plane, but in one spot and on the outside. Itâs sharp in the middle and radiates outward and even after the initial impact it pulses like an earthquake epicenter. It easily causes long lasting headaches and is the most likely of these examples to cause a concussion.
Eye: this is a weird one. The fist doesnât fit within the eye socket so either the knuckles on the brow and cheeks bones protect the actual eye or they donât. The former option gives a full spreading pain below the eye which results in the classic black eye look and a sharp pain on your brow similar to hitting your shin on the couch. The latter option, well bad things can happen when a hard fast object makes direct contact with your eye but for the sake of this it feels like a vacuum bc the concave shape is being covered and pressurized. The eye feels pushed back and pulled forward all at once. It doesnât necessarily hurt that bad for that long unless the punch was meant to do damage. Iâm fortunate to say I donât know what it would feel like then.
Nose: remember that prank kids used to pull where theyâd line up their hands with their nose, push them in one direction and crack a knuckle at the same time to pretend to break their nose? Yeah thatâs what it looks like when someone punches you from the side in the nose, except itâs someone elseâs hand and your nose makes the sound instead of their knuckle. Itâs just like breaking any bone where you hear it and feel the action if it being done but that moment of shock blankets you for a split second until all the pain comes rushing back. Itâs sharp and needlelike and can give you black eyes just to add insult to injury. If you get hit in the nose from the front itâs like the uncomfortableness of when you have to sneeze but canât. Except that feeling took all the steroids and is now using your face as a punching bag to express its roid rage. It crackles outward like static electricity under your skin, your eyesight gets fuzzy and you canât tell if itâs because youâre tearing up, itâs hard to open your eyes, or youâre momentarily stunned and blinded. Just know itâs all three. I find that this one knocks the wind out of you the most. Gotta remind yourself to breathe just donât try to do it through your nose.
If you really want to know what this feels like Iâd suggest joining a mixed martial arts because theyâll teach you correct form and power distribution and you can spar with pads and actually hit each other.
Iâd also recommend learning what it feels like to punch someone in the face. Itâs much more fun and pretty damn cathartic when they deserve it.
(no â¨vibesâ¨, just structure, stakes, and first-sentence sweat)
hello writer friends đ
so you opened a doc. you sat down. you cracked your knuckles. maybe you even made a playlist or moodboard. and thenâŚ
you stared at the blinking cursor like it personally insulted your entire bloodline.
hereâs your intervention. this post is for when you want to write chapter one, but all you have is aesthetic, maybe a plot bunny, maybe a world idea, maybe nothing at all. hereâs how to actually start a book, from structure to sentence one.
â
đśď¸ STEP 1: THE SPICE BASE ~ âWHATâS CHANGING?â
start with this question:
what changes in the protagonistâs life in the first 5â10 pages?
doesnât have to be earth-shattering. they could get a letter, lose a job, run late, break a rule, wake up hungover in the wrong house.
what matters is disruption. the opening of your book should mark a shift. if their day starts normal, it shouldnât end that way.
đ opening chapters are about motion. forward movement. tension. momentum.
if nothing is changing, your story isnât starting, youâre just doing a prequel.
â
âď¸ STEP 2: THE CRUNCHY BITS - CHOOSE AN ENTRY POINT
there are 3 classic places to start a novel. each one works if youâre intentional:
The Day Everything Changes
most popular. you drop us in right before or during the inciting incident. clean, fast, efficient.
pro: immediate stakes
con: harder to sneak in worldbuilding or character grounding
The Calm Before the Storm
starts slightly earlier. show the characterâs ânormalâ life, then break it. useful if the change wonât make sense without context.
pro: space to introduce your characterâs routine/flaws
con: risky if it drags or feels like setup
The Aftermath
drop us in after the big event and fill in gaps as we go. works well for thrillers, mysteries, or emotionally heavy plots.
pro: instant drama
con: requires precision to avoid confusion
đ pick one. commit. donât blend them or youâll write three intros at once and cry.
â
đ§ STEP 3: CHARACTER FIRST, ALWAYS
readers donât care about your setting, your magic system, or your cool mafia politics unless theyâre anchored in someone.
in the first scene, we need to know:
what this person wants
whatâs bothering them (externally or internally)
one trait they lead with (bold, anxious, calculating, naive, etc.)
thatâs it. just one want, one tension, one vibe.
no bios. no monologues. no âthey werenât like other girlsâ essays. put them in a situation and show how they act.
â
âď¸ STEP 4: OPEN WITH FRICTION
first scenes should create questions, not answer them.
there should be tension between:
what the character wants vs. what theyâre getting
whatâs happening vs. what they expected
whatâs being said vs. whatâs being felt
you donât need a gunshot or a car crash (unless you want one). you need conflict. tension = momentum = readers keep reading.
â
âď¸ STEP 5: WRITE THE FIRST SENTENCE - THEN IGNORE IT
okay. now you write it.
no pressure. youâre not tattooing it on your soul. this isnât the final line on the final page. you just need something.
tricks that work:
start in the middle of an action
start with a contradiction
start with something unexpected, funny, or sharp
start with a small lie or a weird detail
đŹ examples:
âThe body was exactly where sheâd left it - rude.â
âHe was already two hours late to his own kidnapping.â
âThere was blood on the welcome mat. Again.â
âThey said donât open the door. She opened it anyway.â
once youâve got it? keep going. donât revise yet. donât edit. just build momentum.
you can come back and make it â¨iconic⨠later.
â
đŚ BONUS: WHAT NOT TO DO IN YOUR OPENING
donât start with a dream
donât info-dump lore in paragraph one
donât give me three pages of your OC making toast
donât try to sound like a Victorian cryptid unless itâs on purpose
donât introduce 7 named characters in one scene
donât start with a quote unless you are 800% sure it slaps
be weird. be sharp. be specific. aim for interest, not perfection.
â
đ TL;DR (but make it â¨usefulâ¨)
something in your MCâs life should change immediately
pick a structural entry point and stick to it
give us a person, not a setting
friction = good
first lines are disposable, just make them interesting
and if you needed a sign to just start the damn book, this is it.
đ love,
-rin t.
