Love love love how Jin Ling is constantly and transparently bullying and manipulating his uncles and they just let it happen. He's hiding behind Jin Guangyao like "shushu 🥺🥺 a-Ling smol bebi 🥺🥺" and at once xiao shushu is like "Of course a-Ling is a small, contrite baby, Jiang-zongzhu! How can you scold him!!" And he sees uncle Mo Xuanyu the notorious cut-sleeve who harassed his other uncle falling in love with Hanguang-jun and immediately insists he be loyal! How dare he still play around!! He's dragging Jiang Cheng around by the collar, both metaphorically and literally! His entire personality is just "yeah my uncles are stupid and cringe and I have to deal with them all the time 🙄🙄"
It is easy to think writing only becomes real when someone reads it, likes it, comments on it, publishes it, buys it, validates it. But the work already mattered when you made it. You practiced attention. You built a scene from nothing. You turned a feeling into language. You learned one tiny thing about craft. An audience can give the work a second life, yes. But the first life happens when you sit down and make it.
they should invent a term for shipping were I don't think they should be in a romantic relationship however I believe they are each others parasite and separating them is not an option
When thinking about Jin Guangyao turning out Like That I think one of the things that sticks out to me is he didn’t really have allies at his own level. Like, in terms of jobs where people treat you as lesser than and you just have to pretend to not be bothered, with restaurant work one of the most helpful things is having coworkers you can complain about tables with. Like, just someone you can be like “ugh that table was so rude” and they’ll be like “ugh what assholes.” Jin Guangyao had his mother, but that’s a different relationship, and she had such high aspirations for him. Then Lan Xichen took his side a lot, but he’s both in a wildly different social strata and doesn’t seem like the kind of person you can complain too, he’s a bit too positive. I guess there’s Xue Yang but Xue Yang’s response to stuff isn’t to complain it’s to fully commit violent crimes. So like idk when I think of pre-violent crimes Jin Guangyao I’m like huh yeah he kind of didn’t really have anyone he could release any of those emotions with. I think about it too in combination with the repeated thematic material regarding the way resentment builds up and becomes more violent when it’s allowed to do so (like Wen Ning being more aggressive as a corpse because of how timid he was in life and unable to express his frustrations, and the Hookhand extra where they realize what the spirit needed was to be able to vent the pain he was unable to do in life, and etc etc).
Super big fan of the way the Nie Mingjue severed head Empathy segment of the book opens with a hard cut to his decapitation of Wen Xu, and the description of how Wen Xu's body was immediately thereafter torn limb from limb and systematically desecrated by Nie Mingjue's allies, and the head put up on a spike.
Because I think it really centers one of the key narrative tensions around the characters' life choices, and the question of the very definition of 'crime.' And how it's a contextualized process, rather than a hardcoded binary of actions that are okay and actions that aren't.
It maybe wasn't good to do that to Wen Xu's corpse, but it was war after all, so it's also not a big deal and the cultivators involved don't carry any lasting culpability, even though it wasn't even useful to the war effort to do that.
There's no need to figure out who it was exactly, and attach a stigma to them for vengeful corpse desecration.
But Jin Guangyao having done the very same thing to Nie Mingjue that Nie Mingjue did and allowed to be done to Wen Xu--well that's bad, right? Because it's not war, now. Because it's politics and personal relationships, and the rules for those are different. It's different.
And Jin Guangyao is like, is it though? No. That's bullshit you all tell yourselves. Lines drawn in water, to make sure you're always in the right and anyone else who resorts to violence is wrong.
The rules aren't ever different. Some of us are always at war.
Which is simultaneously the mindset that makes him a dangerous untrustworthy person who makes everyone around him less safe, and He Has A Point Tho.
All of which juxtaposes really interestingly with Wei Wuxian, who in the two phases of his Terrifying Necromancer era did exactly the same things under what were, to him, about the same circumstances (i.e. people he loved had been killed on a pretext that he'd started it, by people who self-professedly weren't going to stop until they'd taken everything he had left) but when it was war he was a hero (albeit controversial), and when it wasn't war anymore he was a criminal, unforgivable, had to be put down.
Still 'killing people and corpse desecration.' By the same person, using the same methods, with almost the same motives. And all it took to take him across the line from 'basically like when Nie Mingjue did it' to 'basically like when Jin Guangyao will do it' is an alteration in the story being told.
I wish we knew more about Jin Zixuan’s feelings towards Jin Guangyao. Like we know he doesn’t like his parents marriage too much, and the interactions Madame Jin has with Jin Guangyao show she really doesn’t like him, as her husband’s illegitimate child, and with a mother of lower social standing. Like we know that Jin Guangyao and Jin Zixuan didn’t fully refuse to interact, because Jin Guangyao is the one who tells Jin Zixuan about Wei Wuxian during the Jin Zixun situation. Jin Zixuan and Jin Zixun are shown both agreeing and disagreeing on matters, and Jin Zixun is kind of a jackass in general about most things, but class status as well. I’m just super curious, because certain aspects of the Jin household mirror the Jiang household, where you’ve got a very tense marriage where the wife is taking out her anger on her husband’s real or perceived infidelity on the child who, in Wei Wuxian’s case, is the center of that rumor, and in Jin Guangyao’s case, is actually the product of said affair, rather than on the husband, because of family hierarchy placing the father above the mother, and then there’s the child who’s the product of the marriage, which in the case of the Jiangs, that relationship between the two children retains intense focus, whereas in the Jins very little focus at all. It’s interesting too bc we know Jin Zixuan has many many many half siblings, Mo Xuanyu, Qin Su, and Jin Guangyao are just the only named ones (and Jin Zixuan only knows one of them as a sibling).
Every time I see a submissive Jin Guangyao (written or drawn) I def think we didn't read the same novel or watch the same show. This man??? This one??
This man is dominant and enjoys it. You just made him submissive because he's short, don't lie to me.
Do you think ... If JYL lived and had her entire foundation of love shaken and twisted... there would be a bit of role reversal for JYL and JC?
Imagine! JC having to try and placate his sister, telling her that WWX had never meant whatever it was, that WWX had loved them and never meant to hurt them, never meant to hurt JL. And JYL getting progressively more angry and bitter about WWX, hunting any traces of the man in wannabes. JC unsure of what to do as the years go by, before trying to help LWJ hide WWX when he finally gets resurrected by trying to redirect JYL's attentions elsewhere.
This is not what he was meant for. JC cannot handle the weight of his family so irrevocably broken, but here he is.
There JYL is. Grieved, bitter, and angry. Looking so much like the mother she tried so hard not to be.
having an evil shixiong: most normal thing in the world. in fact if you don’t have an evil shixiong you need to really carefully consider the possibility that you might be the evil shixiong
having an evil shishu: also extremely normal. what, you can have an evil shixiong but your shifu can’t? grow up.
having an evil shidi: also fairly common, although there might be a larger issue at play so keep your eyes open for that
having an evil shifu: this is itself an issue, since you are now in one of the classic Confucian Conundrums and have to choose between sacrificing righteousness or filial piety
having an evil disciple: come on man. this one’s on you
having an evil shimei: stop what you’re doing RIGHT now. as of this moment, your one and only mission is to unconditionally support your evil shimei, no takesie backsies
having an evil shijie: ccan i get yuor shijie’s number. please
Something I had to unlearn: giving your character a tragic backstory is not the same as giving them a wound. A backstory is just information. A wound is the thing that makes them flinch at something totally unrelated fifteen chapters later and the reader goes "oh." If the backstory doesn't leave a nerve ending somewhere in the present-day plot, cut it. Nobody needs the trauma. They need the flinch.
big fan of when a character is dead and the narrative frames them in a very angelic, soft, gentle manner but then it turns out not only are they still alive (plot twist) but theyre alive in the most gruesome and horrific way. your loving kind mentor who motivates you to fight in their memory came back wrong and theres blood and dirt under their fingernails from clawing they way out of the grave.
this would've happened to jiang yanli if mxtx respected women
saw this post and it's HIGHKEY sangchengcore. to me.
Well its iirc said that the reason JGY is managing the whole crowd as JGS' right hand is because Zixuan's off on business, so maybe JGS purposefully did not send for his honorable hot head of a son in love with Yanli who may have derailed the meeting in a way not beneficial to JGS. Or MXTX just didn't want him there.
Ooh, this is interesting, and it gives me an excuse to go on about how JGY is presented when we see him serving his father at events.
At the Nightless City victory banquet, JGY's role seems to signify a decent amount of status. He's working the event, but JGS is there making announcements and greeting guests right alongside him and he has his own seat with the rest of the gentry, in a prime location right between his half-brother and his eldest sworn brother.
Fast-forward to the Phoenix Mountain Hunt the following month, and things have changed. JGY is master of ceremonies, explaining the rules of the competition during the hunt and commending everyone's performances at the banquet. He makes announcements at his father's behest and stands up on the dais near the throne, which seems like it's a privileged role, except that this time, he doesn't get to sit down.
He alone greets guests as they enter, he alone circulates in an attempt to deescalate the various conflicts his cousin instigates, he alone is responsible for finding more monsters to hunt when people throw a hissy fit about WWX catching too many. His half-brother, meanwhile, participates in the contests, goes on an awkward not-a-date with his crush, and spends the entire banquet (with all its drama) seated in silence. JGY's seeming authority prevents him from participating in the festivities the way that his supposed peers do. Yeah, he's by the throne, but he's standing--not unlike the servants.
Now, to be clear, he does have a place set for him! When he stomps over to try and make Jin Zixun stop bullying the Twin Jades into doing shots, he rises from the place across the hall from Jin Zixuan that's unoccupied in the second image.
So JGY's certainly afforded more status than a servant, but he's not being treated like a family member, either. No other Jin family members or disciples rush up with a bowed head alongside one of the maids to offer JGS a new cup of wine after JGS flips a table in anger at WWX's disruption.
And it's certainly not Zixun (who instigated the disruption and embarrassingly lost the ensuing power struggle) or Zixuan (who is still trying to marry the disruption's elder sister even after she publicly turned him down) who are getting wine thrown on them for their trouble!
All this is to say, I'm surprised to hear that the novel explains JGY's role as something done out of necessity due to Zixuan's absence, because my takeaway from CQL is that these responsibilities are a deliberate attempt to set JGY apart from Zixuan as different and lesser. Zixuan's right there and he does nothing, either in fulfillment of an assigned duty or of his own volition. I can't imagine him overseeing an all-sect meeting, even on something that didn't tangentially involve his personal life.
After checking (the seven seas version of) the first banquet (the one where WWX crashes) Zixuan isn't even mentioned, and then, yeah he's just mysteriously away after WWX takes the Wens.
But after JGS and Zixun storm off from the first banquet JGY thinks something like 'if I leave who else can deal with this and clean up this mess?' so either Zixuan isn't there or he's just not even a consideration. Which like. Fair.
It also comes across in the novel that JGY is attending to everything. He'a the one who set it up, he's the one who has to deal with everything and clean up, he's the one who keeps the peace. It also still comes across that he's having to follow Jin Zixun around to manage him. And Zixun is the one who spills wine on JGY after JGS flips the table.
(idk not to be vibes based but the idea of Jin Zixuan planning a banquet and attending guests and keeping the peace just seems like it wouldn't happen regardless)
#to be fair in the end it's not surprising that he got to cement himself as the next leader of the jin sect#most dangerous weapon his dad could have handed him was allowing him to socialize and manage carp tower away from him from under his own ass#all these actions were obviously jgs trying to make jgy not look on par with the rest of the family#but what he did in the end was ensure that once he himself was out of the way#jgy didn't have any issues to claim his place because people know him and the court is used to listen to him#and probably also it helps a great deal to have socialized a bit among the servants and have carp tower in his hands from that side as well - via @the-iron-queen
Your dialogue is stiff because everyone is being too honest
Great dialogue can come from radical emotional honesty. But in most real conversations, people
dodge questions
answer indirectly
lie (badly)
change the subject
crack jokes to avoid serious answers
lie (convincingly)
say half of what they mean
tell the truth but get so anxious/angry/defensive others now think they're lying
If your dialogue feels unnatural, it might be because everyone is saying exactly what they think, or articulating their thoughts too well. Try letting characters hide things instead.
Subtext is where tension lives.
more so,
people don’t always speak in full sentences,
slang can change depending on age range, demographic, etc. &
don’t be scared of vocal pauses (uhm, uh, err)
“You have to implicate the audience. They’ve got to squirm, not just over what happens, but because they did nothing about it. They had all the knowledge – this guy was not to be trusted – and they just sat there. People have jumped onstage to stop Iago, wrestled him to the ground. One actor in the 19th century was killed in the part, shot by an audience member. I’m glad that didn’t happen. Maybe I just wasn’t good enough.”
— Rory Kinnear on Iago
Guys I think Lan Xichen Nie Mingjue and Jin Guangyao should fuck. Has anyone else thought of this guys
