PSA to fan creators who don't have a lot of regular contact with children: They are almost always bigger than you think. A 1-year-old baby may already be walking. A toddler is likely already hip-high. A 10-year-old may already be taller than at least one of their parents. A 14/15 year old may already have reached their adult height.

Here's the link. It was actually not immediately easy to find, so I thought this might help.
Was talking to a coworker today who explained that her grandfather was like Snow White “but Californian. And an old man.” in that the creatures of the forest would follow him around and presumably duet with him.
“When he died the ravens sat in the trees outside for a week, watching. Taking turns. A horde of raccoons tried to break into the house every night, tearing at the siding. Eventually they gave up, but it was unsettling.”
“Aww. They were checking on him!” I said, like a normal person. Internally, I thought “Maybe you could do the thing you do with dead pets, where you show them to the living pets so the living pet understands they’re gone. But I guess if you did that to a bunch of scavenging species, they’d be like “Well, that’s very sad but he IS food now.” So what you’d need, for human sensibilities, is some sort of transparent corpse barrier. Like a see-through coffin oh that’s what the dwarves were doing! You’ve stopped paying attention to this conversation about the loss of a beloved family member you gotta phase back in.”
oh that's what the dwarves were doing
A short comic I made about my experiences as a seasonal worker, and the way places change you.

The noble archelon.
This took me weeks of carefully layering colours and washes and it looks so so good (even better in real life!)
Image Description:
A mixed-media (primarily watercolour) painting of an archelon swimming among fronds of kelp. The painting is rendered in soft and bright colours, with luminous golds and yellows standing out among green-blue and the turtle in darker gray-blue-black tones. The texture of the painting is a bit fuzzy.
The archelon has a large wide shell like that of a leatherback sea turtle, wide and large front flippers with some visible scaly patches, and a pronounced hooked beak on its face.

@sherbertilluminated there's a line somewhere in Ursula Vernon's Digger that goes something like "it is difficult to be metaphysical around the truly geologically minded"

Genuinely incredible that the first Star Trek episode aired, ever, essentially opens with these establishing character moments—
McCoy: I lost the one woman I took seriously :( and she married someone else :( and now I have to see her again years later oh my god what should I do aghghghghhhhhh emotioooooons
Kirk: Um, well, I'm not as emotional as you but maybe bring her flowers. [breaks off a piece of a plant that definitely isn't a flower] Liking flowers is, ah, a woman thing. [The rest of the show will firmly establish that he just personally loves flowers]
McCoy: hahaha is that why women like you? because you bribe them with flowers?
Kirk [the rest of the show will also establish that Kirk has a particularly strong rapport with women both romantically and platonically and can rarely depend on ostensibly good relationships with men apart from McCoy and Spock]: well. anyway. I get that you're stressed and early and all, but-
[brief cut to plot and the initial appearance of our hero the Salt Vampire, who reads the psyches of everyone she interacts with to project an image that appeals to them]
McCoy [sees the Salt Vampire as his ex-girlfriend, just as young and hot as he remembers her]: oh wow, um, Nancy, um, hi,,
Darnell the blueshirt [sees the Salt Vampire as a sexy girl from "Wrigley's Pleasure Planet"]: hot damn
Kirk [sees the Salt Vampire as an ordinary nice middle-aged lady]: Good morning, ma'am.
[Five minutes later]
Darnell: X_X
McCoy: but JIM it's NANCY who is in danger and we don't know where she IS and I have so many EMOTIONS and I need-
Kirk: what you need is to stop thinking with your dick and act more like ・゚✧:・゚✧ ✿ Spock ✿* :・゚✧:・゚✧ given that someone has died, you dumb slut
McCoy: ;_; sorry
[Cut to Uhura flirting with a confused Spock on the bridge only for them to hear about a death]
Spock: okay let's institute standard procedures
Uhura: you might be hot but you don't seem to care that the person who died could be Captain Kirk! probably your only friend! also he's my friend :( bros before hos :(
Spock [internally has already developed separation anxiety when Kirk is gone and homicidal impulses when he's in danger, but is externally living up to Kirk's blatant brainiac favoritism]: Performing being upset won't change anything, and the transporter is working fine, so we can just wait for them to show up
[Between scenes]
Kirk: hi Spock I'm alive how's the ship also I have questions about poison
#i will admit it's genuinely kind of hilarious that not only is the idea of kirk being slut shamed or having a ~reputation wholly fanon#—completely absent from the show and pretty blatantly at cross-purposes with how he actually is perceived in-story#eg his femme fatale ways are shrugged off OR the misogynistic stereotype re-purposed for him is 'cold lying bitch' rather than slut#even t'pring's careful schemes include her absolute confidence that if kirk wins he'd refuse her sexually (she's never met him)—#the one who's actually slut shamed is bones! by spock AND kirk. many times!#other things bones has been slut-shamed for by his mutually obsessed friends include 'looking forward to dinner' and 'getting married' (X)
It's not in that opening sequence, but belatedly I realized this is also the episode that casually mentions Kirk has a standing prescription for especially strong sleeping pills.
#but there's no continuity between different episodes! [cut to kirk's hands anxiously stimming in every other episode#the recurrent tension headaches. kirk going to bed multiple times to just lie there in full uniform and try to dial down his anxiety]#kirk drift is a hell of a drug. perhaps even stronger than kirk's canonical extra-strength prescription sleeping pills.#honestly of all the things i love about him as a character#the fact that his incredibly obvious towering anxiety and equally obvious trauma from various sources that absolutely do affect him#are never framed as making him less heroic or spectacular or aspirational a figure—but also not really treated as trivial or unimportant#(canon kirk line: 'am i letting the horrors of the past distort my judgment of the present?')#kirk being an intensely high-strung person who has a ton of repressed fears and hyper-self-scrutiny right under the surface#who holds his own hand when not wringing them and goes full thousand-yard stare periodically#and also a disciplined functional people person whose leadership style = stabilizing and soothing emotional touchstone for 400+ others#is very near the top. like spock is more relatable in many ways but as someone with towering anxiety whom other ppl seem to find soothing#there is something very cathartic in him being treated as so admirable and irreplaceably awesome but w/o minimizing how neurotic he is#especially because he's theatrical and campy about it rather than square-jawed stoic manly man#if anyone on the bridge doesn't realize he's a controlled high-strung person rather than a naturally easy-going one that's on them tbh#(though honestly given the stress backrub scene in which the entire bridge crew could plainly see it was barrows and said nothing#and spock himself had to step forward to alert him bc everyone else joined an impromptu conspiracy of silence? i think they know) @anghraine
