Glass squids (family Cranchiidae) live in the boundless waters of the twilight, or mesopelagic, zone. Their bodies are entirely transparent most of the time, but they can also become a dark, intense red or fill their mantle with ink to completely change their appearance.
Their eyes are relatively large and iridescent, glowing with light organs also known as photophores. This Taonius sp. was encountered at 990 meters (3,248 feet) below the surface in Monterey Canyon. They often hang relatively motionless with their arms above their body. More than 60 species of glass squids live in the deep twilight waters around the world. Some are little more than 10 centimeters (four inches) long, but others are giants. In fact, the largest of all squids—the colossal squid (Mesonychoteuthis hamiltoni), nearly 10 meters (33 feet) long and weighing up to 495 kilograms (1,091 pounds)—belongs to the family Cranchiidae.

something something deep-sea chimaeras can never know what a sunset looks like because their eyes cannot view colour. but the chimaeras that rise to the surface in diel movement can tell them what it feels like. they don't know what it is and never will, but for that it is the most beautiful thing they would see had they the eyes.
So fun fact.
Chimaeras that live in deep-sea only have rods, not cones. This means that they can't see colour at all and see in low resolution, but can pick up a lot of light around them.
But! Chimaeras that migrate vertically in the water column (like elephant fish) can have trichromatic vision (3 cone types) as well as rods! They are similar to rays in this regard, as many sharks are only monochromatic (1 cone type, therefore colourblind).
