Imagine The Fellowship all sitting around the campfire halfway up Caradhras retelling the events of the Hobbit to Boromir and Aragorn Rashomon-style with Gimli going "my dad tells it this way" and Legolas going "well, my dad tells it this way" and the Hobbits all going "but Bilbo tells it this way!" and, even though Gandalf was fucking there for half of it, he refuses to weigh in on anything because watching them argue is more fun and also he doesn't remember because it was over 75 years ago.
Even better: Gandalf remembers it perfectly fine but he keeps making shit up and agreeing to multiple different versions just to throw everyone off

i never really got it when people made posts about light pollution and seeing all the stars for the first time and crying. i always assumed that everyone has gone on a road trip to a bortle 1.0 place and seen stars like that, and it's fantastic, but not like life changing. and then i went to europe last month and was in a mountaintop village of like 300 people and could see about 5 stars in the sky. like fewer than i can see from my home in a big metropolitan city.
my apologies to the non-africans, i did not realise how fucked your sky is
the thing that makes me mad about light pollution is that so much of it could be fixed by downward-facing light fixtures and doing that would also massively reduce energy usage bc all that light cast upward is wasted energy
Iâd honestly be scared as fuck if a bunch of basic shapes came floating towards me. Yellow Prism. Red Sphere? Fuck that.
You are really gonna freak out when I tell you about the sun
The Sun's fine as long as it stays over there
this made me smile, sending you warm vibes today

I'm at a convention for the game of Go with a friend who is almost 84 years old, and he is constantly being accosted by elementary schoolers who want to play him because every year there is a prize for whoever plays a game with the biggest age difference between players.
So every time I go to look for him, I see this:
People in the tags pointing out that this is a great way to get communities to interact: you are extremely correct. There were a lot of kids at this year's go congress (many of them extremely strong players) and it's very funny to watch them roving in packs looking for old people to challenge. At one point when my friends and I were sitting in one of the side rooms, a trio of elementary schoolers marched in and shouted "IS ANYONE HERE OVER FIFTY?"
Presumably so that they could compete for the Elder Slayer award:
when people bring up your past
Ive said this before but swear the biggest skill to learn as an adult is how to resist high-pressure sales tactics. You do NOT have to answer questions with anything other than "Sorry I'm not interested." No matter how nice they are or no matter how many follow up questions they ask or even how agitated they get when you stand your ground. Just keep saying I'm not interested. Don't answer their questions. Don't give them an opening to try to push back on your reasons. Be a fucking brick wall of I'm not interested.
When we bought our car, I told Sean to let me handle it. I walked in and said "We have X for a down payment and cannot pay more than Y in monthly payments." My Y number had some leeway, but I didn't mention that.
First thing the sales guy did after I laid down the rules was turn to Sean and go, "What's your number?" And Sean said. "Oh, no, you negotiate with Gayle."
So, strike one for the sales guy. Could not divide and conquer us by implying THE MAN would not surprised at what I laid down.
Sales guy then had to confer with his manager and left us at his desk for several minutes. I have a vague recollection (this was 16 years ago) of Sean and I amusing ourselves doing bits about the other people there to look at cars. I am sure we did not give off the stressed or nervous energy they were hoping for.
Guy comes back. His first offer is fifty dollars a month more than I told him we could pay. I looked at him and said "I gave you our upper limit."
"Well, but what's another 50 bucks a month?"
"Something I can't afford."
He didn't know what to do with my open and unashamed admittal that I had a budget because my money was finite.
He went back to talk to the manager again.
It took two more rounds of "I told you what I can afford" before he finally came back 20 bucks under what I'd stated as my max.
The trick to resisting high-stress sales tactics is doing the math at home, knowing exactly what you can afford, and then walking into the room and stating that number minus 15%. Then refusing to budge from that number. Never, ever, meet then where they want. Always meet them where you want. Because at the end of the day, you can walk away and go somewhere else and say "I told the people at Z what my terms were, and they refused to work with me. Here are my terms. Meet them, and you make a sale today."
I have been a salesperson. I tried very hard to make a living selling life insurance. I read all the books and failed many, many more times than I succeeded. In the end, I went into education, where the sales pitch is much more agreeable (do your homework and I'll give you a better grade).
Lemme tell you that sales people are like the fae folk in the old tales.
They are beholden to the magic number 3. Refuse a sales pitch three times and they are trained to give up. They are trained in many ways to "redirect a refusal", but three refusals means it's time for them to give up.
They cannot enter your home without your permission. But once given in any form, permission is tough to claw back.
They truly fear a failed deal. Sale folk feed on the magic of forging contracts. If they cannot meet their quota, they will starve.
Their deals are never symmetrical. Somehow, it's always weighted in their favor, usually in inscrutable ways.
Lemme tell you that
sales people are like the fae
folk in the old tales.

oh goddamn this whole page goes so hard actually, please go read it. what an impressive, visceral takedown of this dumb law
As of June 29, 2026 the law discussed here is a recently passed California state law (AB 1043) that requires age validation before using a computer connected to the internet. This is expected to happen at the operating system level, when you login to Windows, MacOS, Linux, etc.
Ageless Linux intends to force the issue before the California state supreme court, then ultimately (probably) the Supreme Court of the United States (SCOTUS). It's a stupid, dangerous law, voted into place by legislators who either don't understand the core issue OR knowingly voted for it because they're assholes.
California is an influential state in the US. Many laws & regulations passed there eventually trickle out to most states. That's why it's worrisome to see this kind of thing rammed through, and why it's important to fight it.
Also, it doesn't matter if you use Linux or not. Or whether you live in California or not. Visit their site, read the text, learn what's going on with access to computing in this hellscape timeline.

Moth's Official List of Reasons You Should Hop on BrĂŒtal Legend
The main character, Eddie Riggs, is voiced by Jack Black. And I mean old school Jack Black who wasn't afraid to cuss and make dick jokes, not family-friendly wishy-washy "Hey let's not be mean to the president that's actively making our lives worse guys that's not cool :(" Jack Black.
Eddie also looks like this. I feel like he appeals to a lot of my audience.
Aside from Jack Black, many other metal icons lend their voices to characters, including Ozzy Osborne (RIP), Lemmy Kilmister (RIP), Lita Ford and Rob Halford.
The soundtrack. Whether you're just starting to get into metal or are a seasoned metalhead, this is the perfect way for you to get a variety of songs from a variety of subgenres (it skews mostly towards classic heavy metal, thrash metal and black metal, with a bit of hair metal, power metal and doom metal for good measure). They also utilize the music in really good ways during missions (Speeding down the highway running over enemies while "Back at the Funny Farm" or "Machine Gun Eddie" plays is an absolutely transcendent experience). I found a lot of new favorites and was delighted to hear old favorites on the soundtrack. Without mentioning spoilers, the final boss includes one of my favorite metal songs of all time, and I physically couldn't stop myself from singing along.
The art direction for the game. Holy shit. Their goal was to make every environment look like it could be the cover art for a real metal album and they DELIVERED. everything from the environments to the characters to the car you drive just OOZES metal charm.
The story is equal parts epic, hilarious and emotional when it needs to be. It's created by Tim Schafer of Psychonauts and Grim Fandango fame, so if those games' writing is your thing you'll love this.
Whole lot of collectibles and missions in an open world environment that doesn't feel like a slog to explore. I'm nearing the endgame and I'm STILL discovering new stuff. Fair warning though, a few of the "fight off enemies" mission sets get pretty same-y. But the game has a good amount of one-off missions and mission sets that make up for it (I personally really enjoyed Fletus' racing missions, it helped me get way better at driving with my jank keyboard controls). The open world has no fast travel but the map isn't super big and the car has decent speed even without upgrades, so as long as you're checking the map you should be able to get where you need to be pretty quickly without much frustration.
A combination of hack and slash and RTS gameplay that can be frustrating at first but feels SO good to pull off. I'm normally not a huge RTS fan but the game was pretty good at explaining it in a way a beginner can understand.
