Sweet tea is a big thing in the US South. To make it properly we make a simple syrup with sugar (dissolving the sugar in hot water first) the add that to the hot tea and then chill and add ice cubes.

This is why in Southern restaurants Sweet Tea is a specific menu item separate from plain, unsweet, iced tea.

When I was in Cornwall over the summer a member of our party tried to order iced tea and was met with complete perplexity. Frankly the best substitute for sweet tea is probably cider. Which seems wrong but with a really good cider, you won’t care about that.

“I know I’ve told this story before, but my abusive ex refused to let me take birth control. I was on the pill until he found them in my purse. She made a note in my chart and instructed the front desk never to leave messages for me—instead, she programmed her personal cell phone number into my phone under the name “Nora”. Cab Calloway, he was a legend performer and entertainer, although he’s listed as a jazz singer he did much more with his voice, his singing style and delivery was very unique. Cab (with his band) was the first black artist to sell over a million copies of a single record and he paved the way for many artists to come. Happy Black History Month.

it's so funny to me that conservatives think the reason university students become more liberal is because of the actual course material and not like. the fact that universities in the US introduce are oftentimes the first place Americans are introduced to a walkable environment with affordable health care, with community spaces for any affiliation under the sun where they give you free resources and cheap food. with included public transit and opportunities for training in your field of choice. and you realize that for how much you're spending on tuition/taxes, yeah, you do deserve these things, it would be insane not to have those. and then you graduate and go back to having to buy a car to drive 20 minutes to the grocery store.

It's also one of the first places a lot of people raised in insular, conservative areas meet "the other". People of other ethnicities and cultures, people of other religions, other gender presentations, sexualities, etc. You get to know them and start realizing how much of what you "knew" about them was myth or straight-up propaganda.

It's a lot harder to demonize queer people when the person helping you pass calculus is a trans woman, or your lab partner talks about his boyfriend exactly the same way you talk about yours. It's a lot harder to believe that immigrants are out to get you when your Hindu roommate cheerfully shares a care package of homemade goodies from home, or Malia down the hall covers your lunch because you forgot to bring your wallet to study group. You start rethinking some assumptions when the 6 foot spike-encrusted goth who sits behind you in lecture hall shows everyone photos of his baby niece dressed like a puppy for Halloween with all the pride of a new parent, and you remember when your flannel and camo-wearing uncle did the same thing at work last year with photos of your little sister.

Suddenly all those "others" are just people. They're your friends, classmates, coworkers, and maybe even romantic interests. And that's a lot harder to hate or fear.

Delete whatever's in there and replace it with ALL of the stuff with the github file.

okay so i used this term talking to all the best buy staff who helped me unfuck my tower pc, and they all immediately twigged to it even though they'd never heard it used as such, but I'm wondering if there's an actual term for warning-sign-errors-via-specific-programs-that-die-that-signify-a-deeper-issue-with-your-PC that I don't know about

example, the slow breakdown of my PC from earlier this year:

the very first canary is when I'm trying to use websites and i get

errors but only at random, so it doesnt affect my browsing ability as a whole.

they alert me that something's about to go Wrong with my operating system

after that, the next canary is the inability to shut off certain programs without them erroring out, oh say, applications like task manager

after that, the next canary is being unable to open files rather than just being unable to close them:

^here, I was simply trying to open a jpg image.

the next canary is the PC itself not being able to shut down through normal shutdown means, and requiring force shutdown nearly every time by holding the button

the final canary, and the one that told me 'yeah no, deal with this NOW.' was when my USB ports stopped working. like. I'd put in a USB or an external drive and the PC would read NOTHING showing up. They worked on one final bootup so I was able to get my grubby lil pizza hands on all my files before hauling the whole tower into geeksquad like some sort of jalopy car

These are DELICIOUS! I substituted chocolate chips for pecans because its what i had on hand.

It tastes like a pumpkin gingerbread cake! Great treat for fall and winter!

Tim Cain's Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Muffins -- They're the shadow king's favorite!

1 and 2/3 cup flour

2 tsp cinnamon

1/4 tsp cloves

1/4 tsp baking powder

2 eggs

1 cup chocolate chips

1 cup sugar

1 tsp nutmeg

1 tsp baking soda

1/4 tsp salt

1 cup pumpkin (half of a 16 oz can)

1/2 cup (one stick) butter, melted

preheat oven to 350. grease muffin tins (one dozen regular size) or use baking cups. mix flour, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a large bowl. Break eggs into another bowl. add pumpkin and butter and whisk until blended. stir in chocolate chips. pour over dry ingredients and stir until just blended. do NOT overstir! scoop batter into tins and bake 20-25 minutes. after cooling, keep muffins wrapped in plastic to avoid drying.
